In Defense Of Mark Udall

During the past week, a lot of…ahem…commotion was stirred up in the local blogosphere over the decision by both of our US Senators to join the so-called Moderate Dems Working Group–better known as the Moderate Caucus Thingy. Though their decision caused some head-scratching here, and some guillotine sharpening elsewhere, the move shouldn’t be that surprising; […]

Why Tom Stone Is Running

UPDATE: Cast your vote in the poll. The Durango Herald has a good report up today on Colorado GOP Chairman candidate Tom Stone, who will try to unseat current chair Dick Wadhams this weekend in an election decided by 500 party insiders. Excerpt: Stone faces a tough challenge from incumbent Colorado party chairman Dick Wadhams. […]

Josh Penry Just Makes Stuff Up (Vanishing Drills Edition)

(Bumped into Friday by popular demand – promoted by Colorado Pols) It’s been pointed out that we spend a fair amount of time these days deconstructing the activities and public statements of Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry. Our attention is variously credited to partisanship, a “man-crush,” or the simple fact that his leadership has been […]

Udall Trades, Bennet Looks Beyond Vaporware Primary

The Denver Post follows up on yesterday’s “big story” that Colorado Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet have ganged up with other “moderate” Democrats to do…the stuff that moderates do (more on that in a moment). Both Mark Udall and Michael Bennet have joined a group of Senate Democrats who Wednesday rolled out a centrist […]

Colorado Pols Political Tourney – More Breakdown

We’re breaking down the bracket in the Colorado Pols Political Tournament, and after starting with the left-hand side of the bracket, we’re moving to the right-hand side. Click below to take a look and cast a vote. Here’s how to fill out your bracket: Consider the Political Tournament a race towards a big final political […]

Safe Dem House Seat Up For Grabs–Dogpile!

As the Denver Post reports: Nine people have raised their hands to replace state Rep. Anne McGihon, D-Denver, who announced this week that she will vacate her seat March 27. The vacancy committee for House District 3, made up of portions of Arapahoe and Denver counties, is scheduled to meet March 26 to pick her […]

With Math Skills Like These

Another edition of “Ignore My Next Press Release,” object lesson supplied by the Colorado Senate Minority Office: Senate Dems vote to erase state’s 30-year-old spending limits That’s the release’s title–they’re talking about Senate Bill 228, of course, the Arveschoug-Bird general fund limit repeal. Now the Arveschoug-Bird limit passed in 1991. Just a moment, we’re fetching […]

Udall, Bennet Join Moderate Caucus Thingy

Democratic Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet announced today in a joint press release that they are now officially part of a moderate working group/coalition/thingy called “The Moderate Dems Working Group.” According to the announcement: The Moderate Dems Working Group will meet every other Tuesday before the Democratic Caucus lunch to discuss legislative strategies and […]

McInnis Makes His Move?

Perhaps the moment you’ve all been waiting for–given Scott McInnis’ track record of expressing ‘interest’ in running for everything, from the U.S. Senate to Mesa County dogcatcher (and the Grand Junction Sentinel’s rush to print a story anytime McInnis farts), we’ll only fully believe it when the Secretary of State gets the papers. But no […]

Not With a Bang, But a Whimper

How did the GOP’s opposition to Senate Bill 228, the bill to repeal the 1991 Arveschoug-Bird restrictions on the state’s general fund that achieved final Senate passage today, collapse in such an embarrassing heap–and what does this fight portend for the next? From the Colorado Independent: Passing the bill out of the Senate will be […]

Be Forever, Rocky Mountain News

We don’t care what you call it: Everything you’ve said, we’ve said about the decline of both the quality and viability of independent local media, and the deleterious effects that decline has on all of our institutions, relationships, and society as a whole, comes down to a simple choice you can make right now. Take […]

Rep. Anne McGihon Resigning Seat

Rep. Anne McGihon, who was going to be term-limited in 2010 anyway, will apparently resign her seat early to take a lobbying gig. According to a press release:

Akerman Senterfitt announced today that State Representative Anne L. McGihon (D-Denver, Arapahoe) has rejoined the firm. Rep. McGihon will work in the firm’s Government Affairs and Public Policy group. She will be assisting clients nationally from Akerman’s offices in Denver and Washington D.C.

Who will replace McGihon? Early speculation from Colorado Pols mentioned Washington Post reporter and noted author T.R. Reid.

Denver Post Completes Circular Firing Squad on Editorial Page

The Denver Post is sufficiently hard up for ad revenue and so they’ve apparently started auctioning off their editorial page.  First there was the monumentally silly and factually wrong editorial on HB 1170, written without reading either the Post’s own news story or the Associated Press  ( http://www.coloradopols.com/sh… ).   Now there’s a paid ad […]

Whistling Past The “Party of No”

As the landmark decision this morning by the Colorado Supreme Court is digested, affirming the authority of the state government to take reasonable measures not in conflict with the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) to preserve state revenue, one thing is clear: a lot of GOP talking points just got ripped into bite-size pieces. The […]

And the Colorado Polster of the Month(s) Is…

Congratulations to Club Twitty, the newest member of the distinguished winners circle that is The Colorado Polster of the Week/Month club. In a three-way runoff election, Club Twitty captured 42% of the votes in a stunning upset of first-round leader Steve Harvey Hurray, Huzzah and all that for Club Twitty!

BREAKING: CO Supreme Court Upholds Property Tax Freeze: Arveschoug-Bird Repeal Greenlighted

The Colorado Supreme Court announced today that it has upheld Gov. Bill Ritter’s property tax freeze proposal (by a 6-1 vote) for school funding. Legalese available here. This is a big story with major implications for political fights waging at the Capitol at this very moment, not to mention Governor Ritter personally–we’ll update with detailed […]

Where is Mark Udall on EFCA?

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) The question has inexplicably been bandied about on various blogs lately. All you have to do is search the Congressional Record for the details. In short, Udall thinks EFCA as drafted has much room for improvement. Follow me after the jump to read the gory details… He thinks too […]

Et Tu, Riley?

We want to begin by reminding everyone that Denver Post reporter Michael Riley is, on the whole, an excellent reporter and an asset to the community in his thoughtful coverage of Colorado politics. Our readers will remember it was Riley who wrote a devastating series of articles last spring on GOP Senate candidate Bob Schaffer’s […]

No More Games on SB 228: A Future of Fiscal Sanity

(What they said – promoted by Colorado Pols) As SB 228 appears to be headed for final passage in the Senate early next week, with momentum building and a broad coalition of supporters growing, we wanted to set the record straight on some points.  There’s been a lot of misinformation, plenty of political games, and […]

Dan Caplis For Senate?

(It must be that time of year again – when Dan Caplis pretends to be thinking about running for an office that no other Republicans are remotely interested in supporting him for. http://www.coloradopols.com/sh… – promoted by Colorado Pols) 5280 reports: Talk-radio hosts might be well-known political figures, but can they turn their popularity among listeners […]

RNC Chair Angers Republicans…Again

It wasn’t long ago that new RNC Chair Michael Steele was forced to apologize to Rush Limbaugh for not being nice to him. Now Steele has made another boo-boo, as The Washington Post reports: Republican National Committee Chairman Michael S. Steele was on the receiving end of a fresh round of criticism from prominent party […]

“Second Stimulus” Backpedal Complete

Concluding yesterday’s discussion of certain extremely ill-timed statements by certain Democratic congressional leaders, indicating they were “starting work” on a second stimulus package: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said a second U.S. economic stimulus plan isn’t “in the cards” for now and that she would first like to see the $787-billion package signed into law by […]

Colorado Polster of the Months: The Runoff

You made your nominations and cast your votes, so now it’s time for the final runoff voting for Colorado Polster of the Months. Just three candidates broke the 10% barrier in the early voting, so just three candidates are included in the final vote below. We’ll declare the winner on Monday morning.

The Answer Is Still No, “Party of No”

It seems Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry has taken his case for “compromise”–as we’ve been discussing for several days now, the blanket stonewalling hasn’t been working out too well–to the Denver Post editorial board. Whether to remove a 6 percent limit on the growth of state government’s general-fund spending has become one of the most […]
