So, Um, Trump Wants Russia to Help Him Become President

trumpburnThere’s really no other way to put this: Donald Trump is actively encouraging Russia to help him defeat Hillary Clinton for President. From the New York Times:

Donald J. Trump said Wednesday that he hoped Russia had hacked Hillary Clinton’s email, essentially encouraging an adversarial foreign power’s cyberspying on a secretary of state’s correspondence.

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Mr. Trump said, staring directly into the cameras. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

Mr. Trump’s call was an extraordinary moment at a time when Russia is being accused of meddling in the U.S. presidential election. His comments came amid questions about the hacking of the Democratic National Committee’s computer servers, which researchers have concluded was likely the work of two Russian intelligence agencies. [Pols emphasis]

Later in the news conference, when asked if he was really urging a foreign nation to hack into the private email server of Mrs. Clinton, or at least meddle in the nation’s elections, he dismissed the question. “That’s up to the president,” Mr. Trump said, before finally saying “be quiet” to the female questioner. “Let the president talk to them.”

You may commence trying to defend Trump in the comments below. Just please don’t pretend that this isn’t a really, really weird thing for a major Party’s Presidential candidate to say in public.

  2. This is treason. imagine how the right would be acting if a Democrat had said this. Does this have anything to do with the money that trump owes Russia?

    1. They're trying to spin it as better than HRC compromising the security of her e-mails. Trying to say that Trump never invited Russia to do some more spying. Just that if anyone has… you know…. anything…. they should turn it over to the FBI. Which of course and as usual bears no resemblance to what he actually said.

      In answer to your question, had this been a Dem every Republican in America, every elected  GOP official, past and present, every rightie media outlet and talking head would be screaming for the person's instant resignation from the race and immediate arrest, trial and execution, not necessarily in that order. Tar, feathers, firing squads, nooses would no doubt be included in the invective and much worse than that throughout rightie social media.

      But don't expect to hear much besides "HRC is worse", "taken out of context", etc. from any of the above not already on the anti-Trump side.

The layers of stupid from Trump are hard to keep track of.  Next, is he going to encourage white supremacists to physically break into Clinton campaign headquarters to steal information and destroy stuff? The guy is a complete narcissist. He thinks it, he says it. Completely irrespective of policy positions (Trump has none), how can any adult think that this guy is qualified or capable of being president?

    1. Maybe Trump has been winning so much he's sick of winning devil

       just how deeply in debt he is, and how much of it he owes to the Russians among other hostile nations, it’s fair to ask if his entire campaign has been one desperate long-con aimed at keeping himself out of yet another bankruptcy.

    2. This will definitely not be a one cycle story. See Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort's Russian/Ukrainian career in politics and "business". Just google his name and the links keep coming.

      . . . he's more likely running to avoid Icepick Ivan and Vladdy the Hammer.

  11. Forget the Russians — Trump is a useful idiot simply doing what comes naturally. For a dystopian look into what a Trump Administration would be like: 

    Trump’s foreign policy statements are perfectly consistent with his character and thinking. The man is uninterested in anything he doesn’t understand. He is incapable of strategic planning, and he has a particular distaste for paying debts. Of course he doesn’t see any reason for the United States to fulfill its obligations to other countries and organizations—just as Trump personally wouldn’t fulfill his obligations to other people, or to organizations. Yes, that happens to be exactly what Putin would want him to say. But the idea that Putin is somehow making or even encouraging him to say these things is a work-around for the inability to imagine that the Republican Party’s nominee is saying them of his own accord.

    After all, you will think, the American presidency is a strangely limited institution. It doesn’t give Trump that many ways to radically alter the everyday lives of Americans. But that is exactly the problem. President Trump will have to begin destroying the institutions of American democracy—not because they get in the way of anything specific he wants to do, like build the wall (though he will probably have moved on to something else by that point), but because they are an obstacle to the way he wants to do them. A fascist leader needs mobilization. The slow and deliberative passage of even the most heinous legislation is unlikely to supply that. Wars do, and there will be wars. These wars will occur both abroad and at home. They will make us wish that Trump really were Putin’s agent: at least then there would be no threat of nuclear war.
