The liberal group Progress Now is out with a new video highlighting alleged “lies” told by Senate candidate Bob Schaffer over the years. It’s better produced than their last hit on Schaffer before Christmas, and they’ve apparently spoofed Schaffer’s website as well to amusing effect. Press release follows.
Breaking News: Bush Coming to Colorado
Launch of ShiftySchaffer Website and Video to counter visitFor Immediate Release
Wednesday, January 9, 2008
Contact: Michael Huttner
(303) 931-4547Denver: ProgressNowAction launched a new website and the first in a “Shifty” Schaffer video series to promote awareness of President Bush coming to Colorado on Thursday, January 31, 2008 for a fundraiser benefiting Bob Schaffer’s campaign for the U.S. Senate.
“Why has Schaffer been hiding Bush’s visit from the media and people of Colorado?,” asked Michael Huttner, Executive Director of ProgressNowAction, Colorado’s largest online progressive advocacy organization. “Schaffer, like Bush, has a history of not being straight with the people of Colorado.”
This morning, ProgressNowAction launched a 30 second video–the first in a “Shifty” Bob Schaffer video series which highlights Schaffer’s record of lying to the public. The video can viewed at:
ProgressNowAction also launched its “Shifty Schaffer Accountability Project” to call on the public to visit http://ShiftySchaffer.com to submit anonymous tips on Schaffer’s record.
“We are calling on the public to submit their ideas to http://ShiftySchaffer.com on how to raise awareness of Bush’s visit and for any information on Schaffer’s extreme, and often unethical record,” noted Huttner.
The Bush-Shifty Schaffer Tie
Schaffer now claims he is not a DC insider, but once bragged to the press that President Bush fondly referred to him as “Bobby Boy.” (Rocky Mountain News, July 15, 2004)
Schaffer now claims he’s against pork barrel projects, but as a Congressman lobbied for a $400,000 earmark for a train museum named after the Bush family. [Schaffer letter to Rep. Regula, 10/29/2002; Papers of Congressman Schaffer]
ProgressNowAction learned of Bush’s visit following a tip from one of its members.

If they are going to drive people to a website like this, they should put up the citations there they use in the ad. Not everyone is going to just take their word for it.
Oh wait, the Repubs never have citations because they make most everything up. Why the double standard?
– dave
ps – I do agree citations would be good, but why is the right never held to that standard?
What’s your problem? How does building the most solid case possible against Bob Schaffer have anything to do with your complaint? Sell your soap elsewhere.
Nor are the won or lost on issue papers, detailed lists of the candidates stand, or anything else like that.
And every time we Dems try to win a campaign that way – we lose. I prefer to run a campaign to win rather than based on the way we wish people made their decisions.
But apparently they are won or lost on how amazing (or not) campaign websites are, which you constantly bitch about before mentioning how great your mom’s was. Go condescend to your cat or something – although it won’t be much more impressed than I.
No I don’t think much of Schaffer’s website – but I think what hurts the most is the perception of no depth it gives. I don’t think anyone has read all of Udall’s site – but it comes across as that of a candidate who has put in a lot of thought on all the issues, and is reaching out to everyone. And that is worth a lot.
– dave
I don’t have a cat but I talked to my dog. Since he’s a Golden he was very responsive – of course, they’re responsive and thrilled about anything. (ps – I don’t think my mom’s website was great – my point with it is that 1 person, 2 days, you can have a decent website. So why would a candidate not do that…)
I just think you were being a gas bag about a red herring issue.
I was being sarcastic – unsuccessfully apparently. Oh well, they’re (my comments) not all winners.
I am not sure who your target audience is here.
This ad will not work well with moderate Republicans.
Maybe Independents.
It seams to target only the anti-Bush administration Crowd which means speaking to your own base.
The Republicans who are unhappy with the current administration have already got the memo that Bush is not on the ballot, AND they know Shaffer was not part of the Bush Administration.
So what else ya got?
And they will keep doing that, fairly in some cases, unfairly in others, all through the election. Standard Operating Procedure when the president is very unpopular.
ad.
ProgressNow better watch it, or they’ll be committing a “General Betray Us” screwup.
I think Schaffer is a train wreck – and so’s his campaign – but at least he was honest and principled when it came to honoring his term limits pledge. I will give him that.
