It’s hard to say which changes more often – his name or the seat he is running for. The politician formerly known as Muhammad Ali Hasan is now apparently known only as Ali Hasan. Oh, and he’s not running for SD-8 anymore; Hasan confirmed rumors today that he’s running for HD-56 in an effort to win the open seat left vacant when Democrat Dan Gibbs was selected to replace State Sen. Joan Fitz-Gerald.
Full press release follows…
Avon, CO- After much deliberation and extensive consultations with Republican Party officials, Ali Hasan has decided to seek the State House of Representatives seat for District 56. Official announcements and town hall style meetings with numerous party leaders have been scheduled for Friday, December 7 and Monday, December 10..
Republican Party leaders including House Minority Leader, Mike May, and Leadership Team members David Balmer and Amy Stephens, among others, recruited Hasan to run for the House seat instead of State Senate District 8, where Hasan initially filed his candidacy. When elected, Hasan would have more of a leadership role and have a brighter future with the party by serving in the House of Representatives. Republican House Leadership has identified the District 56 seat as a high priority goal in the 2008 election, and Hasan is a natural choice to replace the outgoing Representative, Dan Gibbs, because Hasan is energetic, passionate about the Western Slope and is eager to reform and strengthen the party. When asked about this new development Hasan said “I am looking forward to making an announcement and having opportunity to serve the people of district 56. It is time that those on the Eastern Slope begin to pay attention to those of us who live on the Western Slope. I am thrilled that I may be able to bring some attention to the things that matter to us.”
Hasan is looking forward to hosting campaign kick-off celebrations in Avon, Breckenridge and Leadville this Friday. Loaded Joe’s in Avon will host a celebration from 7:30 to 9 am, Clint’s Bakery and Deli in Breckenridge will host a celebration from 12 to 1:30 pm, and a party from 4:30 to 6 pm at Proving Grounds in Leadville will be the campaign’s final stop for Friday. Free coffee will be provided to all in attendance at all three locations.
Party officials will be joining Hasan for two town hall style meetings on Monday, December 10 to lend support to Hasan as he lays out details of what he hopes to accomplish in the House after he is elected in November of 2008. Residents of Summit County are encouraged to attend the discussion at The Crown Cafe from 12 to 2 pm on Monday. Eagle County residents can hear from Hasan and party leadership beginning at 5 pm on Monday at Loaded Joes. Attendees to either of Monday’s events can also enjoy free coffee provided by Hasan.

I’m changing my name to ‘Jon Elway’
Tha should get me a few votes.
you need to announce that you are going to announce about an upcoming announcement.
I’ll give Ali this, unlike most who do all this considering unofficially and talk about they are going to do whatever – he’s made clear announcements of what he was going to do.
I’ll take his approach over the “I’m considering making an annoucement about something I might do…”
The name change is interesting though…
From his myspace page:
I hope those are not in order of importance.
I mean, all of us have Jesus, George W., and Reagan on our lists, but not in that order.
He’s excused because he’s not running for CD-6.
Wouldn’t it just be easier for his father to buy him an island and name him emperor or something?
Could probably execute a mutual security agreement with the US and get foreign aid.
….I’m not looking to change small islands
I’m looking to change the Western Slope and the Republican Party
When Party officials approached me and recruited me for HD56, I said that two things had to happen –
1. Western Slope Priorities – The House GOP had to prioritize non-partisan, Western Slope issues, like keeping severance tax funds in impacted areas and getting more proactive on the pine beetle infestation issue
2. Town Halls – My State Party has ran itself like a Members Only Club the past few years – we needed to do town hall meetings around the Western Slope, show the people that the Republican Party cares, and that we are going to get energized about creating solutions that will empower the Western Slope, not disenfranchise it
I am so deeply proud of my Party – not only did the House GOP agree to make priority of the Western Slope issues above (severance tax and pine beetle) they also agreed to come here to our Western Slope and host town halls where we could outreach to the people
I am so deeply touched that Minority Leader Mike May, and Asst Minority Leader David Balmer were so eager to prioritize such issues and participate in town halls — Representatives Frank McNulty, Amy Stephens, Jerry Sonnenberg, Marsha Looper, Ken Summers, Jim Kerr, and Stella Garza Hicks will also be visiting our Western Slope and participating in these town halls
We may have lost the House, Senate, and Governorship, but Monday will mark a NEW BEGINNING for the Republican Party – a Party that stands by its traditional principles, but is also responsive to all voices
I could never be more proud to be a Republican and I certainly couldn’t turn down my Party’s requests to run for HD56 after such outreach – I have found my political home
Helping small islands is nice… but the Western Slope is my heart
My decision was not motivated by what was good for the Party, but rather, what was good for the Western Slope
What I didn’t know was that the Party would be changed in a positive way too
I invite you all to come to our home, the Western Slope, tomorrow (Friday) in Avon, Breckenridge, and Leadville, and we hope to see you at our town halls in Breckenridge and Avon on Monday
It’s time to take back the House!
May peace and love be upon you all!
Muhammad Ali Hasan
That when Hasan comes up, you always have to post some spiteful crap about his rich dad?
It’s getting kind of old.
Sounds like Hasan’s respected. I know Al White is respected. I’m glad they aren’t running against each other. Maybe he wants the opportunity to work closely w/ Doug Bruce?
Al White is the single most liberal member of the Republican delegation in Denver. If Hasan was interested in anything other that just getting a title, he would have run a primary against White’s liberal ass.
Instead Wadhams, May, Balmer, et. al bought him off to protect RINO White.
…the Republican party meets your standards of purity, and is down to 2 seats in the leg because people won’t vote for the dingbats that are so right wing.
I love TABOR
you can be anti-tax or for limited government and still be fit to govern.
TABOR is actually designed to destroy government, to make it disfunctional. That is not conservatism–it is nihilism.
and
Because with Ref C the voters clearly showed that they do not want the budget reductions that TABOR will cause if left unchecked.
So, which way will you go in the leg?
A vote for Ref C was not a vote to destroy TABOR. In fact, many Republicans voted for C in order to preserve TABOR. In fact, it can be argued that Ref C did exactly what Tabor was designed to do. It limited the growth of government and taxes without voter consent. If the legislature and the governor wanted to make a case for keeping additional revenue, then it could appeal to the voters and by the voice of the people do so. That is exactly what happened.
Also, the problem was not TABOR as a whole, rather the racheting down mechanism that dropped revenues during the early 2000’s.
That ratchet down is the core of TABOR. Saying TABOR is great except for that is like saying the Confederacy was great except for that little slavery detail.
Coming up with a reasonable workable way to hold taxes as a percentage of state GDP or something like that requiring a vote to go over it – sure. But TABOR was purposely designed to shrink the government piece of the pie over time and that kills the government.
The core of TABOR was preventing additional taxation or retaining growth of revenue beyond population growth and CPI without a vote of the people. The rachet wasn’t even known about by most people until it actually came into play 10 years into TABOR.
I think the people who wrote it did see what could happen, and just stayed quiet about it. If you wanted to eliminate government and get a populace that supports the idea of government to vote for it, that’s the way to do so.
so I’m sure that was the desired effect.
who have had to “de-Bruce” to survive. Tell this to the majority in Colorado who voted for Ref C, knowing that something had to be done to keep state government afloat. Or perhaps you’d like to tell us that someone stole your name and posted that comment.
“The politician formerly known as Muhammad Ali Hasan is now apparently known only as Ali Hasan.”
Will he soon be known only by a typgraphical symbol?
A question mark?
Maybe a comma.
.
gee, I read the diary intro,
and it sounds like the guy changes his name weekly.
But no, he changed it only once.
And all he did is drop his first name –
apparently for the purpose of how it appears on the ballot –
so that ignoramus bigots would look past his religion and vote based on qualifications and issues.
But it sounds like,
from reading the comments here,
that bigotry against someone based on their religion is one type of bigotry that is still acceptable.
.
know that he goes by Ali.
As for the move to HD 56, I think it is a great move. House Republicans are more dynamic and are a better fit to Ali’s high energy style. With Rep. Gibbs leaving the seat, HD 56 is one of the few places that Republican have a good shot at gaining some ground. It should be a great race, and having Ali in this race is good for both the district and the Republican Party.
For keeping it real, Barron. Thank you.
