Old Faces, New Lobbyists

  • by: Colorado Pols

At least three state representatives who resigned before New Year’s Eve to avoid being subject to the “revolving-door” provisions of Amendment 41 are back at the capitol as…(insert suspense here) lobbyists.

Ex-GOP Reps. Joe Stengel and Laurie Clapp have reportedly started a lobbying firm with Democrat Fran Coleman, and aren’t suffering from a lack of clients from what we hear. Given that the legislator-cum-lobbyist talent pool is going to get thin in the future as outgoing reps face two years of mandatory alternate career paths, this was a smart business decision.

Which means Joe “Per Diem” Stengel won’t sweat for money anymore, and Fran Coleman can finally do something about her hair.

  1. Stengel and Clapp will be terrific lobbyists and – quite frankly – I’d rather see them with Legislative business then some of the other (more corruptible) former Legislators who have been in business for years now.

  2. So who is Coleman going to lobby for? Even though she was the senior most rep from Denver she didn’t chair a single standing committee.  I wouldn’t want her lobbying for me.  Maybe people will have her lobby for bills they really want to kill.

      1. I only know what she and her campaign did (dirty tricks-wise) to Alfredo Hernandez.

I didn’t think there was anyone within a couple miles of the Capitol that she didn’t offend with her abrasive style while she was in office.

As far as legislation goes, they’d better have someone else writing their bills, because Coleman rarely knows enough about any subject to write passable legislation. Her solutions usually manage to be contrary to one law or another.

I wonder if she will be any better with campaign finance and disbursements than she was while a legislator-will inattention to details finally catch up to her, or will her partners save her from any of the many faux pas that are a hallmark of her MO?

          1. I’ve been busy on a couple of projects and haven’t had a lot of time to post until just lately.  But politics is a lot like watching a soap opera-you can jump right back in without feeling like you really missed anything!

  3. Coleman lacks ethics.  She lacks style and grace and is very dishonest. I doubt she will get the respect she will need to do a good job. In addition, the way she spoke about Stengel in “private” was so bad that is it shocked me she would be BFF with him. But then again, I did just say she is dishonest.
