Last month we discussed a confounding decision by left-wing groups to display a piñata likeness of a Democrat who did not appear at a CO-08 candidate forum hosted by Working Families Party (WFP) and COLOR Latina. The event in Thornton was a troubling example for Democrats of the sort of obsession with infighting that has turned the Colorado Republican Party into a laughingstock.
As we wrote at the time:
The vitriol of Donald Trump’s MAGA movement and the constant infighting from Colorado Republicans are not the kind of examples that anyone should follow. If Colorado Democrats hope to continue enjoying historic levels of electoral success, it is just as important to push back against the gross actions of lefty groups as it is to stand up against dangerous Republicans.
It’s time to push back again, unfortunately.
The Thornton piñata stunt was the brainchild of self-important asshat Tim Hernandez, the former half-term state legislator from Denver who immediately lost a Democratic Primary because he was such a ridiculous and toxic figure. Since losing that 2024 election, Hernandez has seemingly made it his mission to prove those Democratic Primary voters correct.
On Tuesday, Hernandez disrupted a health care debate sponsored by Healthier United — literally called “Disagree Healthier” — not because he disagreed with the discussion but because he felt that Republican Michael Fields, President of Advance Colorado, should not have been allowed to speak at all. The words may be different, but this kind of performative political theater from a far-left activist is not all that different from the screaming rants of right-wing MAGA trolls.
As Shaun Boyd of CBS4 reported:
“Liberal activist and former lawmaker Tim Hernandez turned a debate over health care affordability into a debate over who should be allowed to debate, refusing to leave unless conservative Michael Fields [left].”
The antics of Hernandez led to the premature end of the “Disagree Healthier” forum. From CBS4:
As tension escalated, Healthier United CEO Jake Williams decided to pull the plug on the event, “I don’t know what exactly, what was gained. But I know what was lost was an opportunity to model better behavior and make our democracy healthier.”…
…The debates, he says, aren’t designed to sway people’s opinions: “What we’re aiming to do is embrace disagreement and ditch dysfunction.”
This sort of behavior from Hernandez serves no practical purpose. Disrupting an event organized by a progressive non-profit is merely Tim Hernandez berating people for not being more like Tim Hernandez. It’s “look at me!” politics and nothing more.
Later in the evening, Hernandez unintentionally made a strong point against his own behavior:
Hernandez says the debate wasn’t about civility but about giving a platform to someone he says doesn’t deserve one [Pols emphasis], based on the ballot initiatives he’s brought, including measures addressing crime and immigration.
Giving a platform to someone who doesn’t deserve one.
Indeed.
