Sorry, Republicans: Gun Safety Laws WORKED in Boulder Firebombing Case

  • by: Colorado Pols

News was still trickling out about the firebombing attack in Boulder last weekend when right-wing talking heads and Republican elected officials started screaming about their belief that Colorado’s immigration laws were responsible for a horrific act that injured at least 12 people.

In recent days, Aurora City Council person Danielle Jurinsky called out several elected Democrats by name, directly blaming them for Egyptian national Mohamed Soliman’s unspeakable terror attack against a group of Jewish protestors because of what she and other Republicans say are lax immigration laws in Colorado. Congressman Gabe Evans (R-Ft. Lupton) has been particularly enthusiastic about blaming Colorado Democrats for Soliman’s attack.

These comments aren’t aging well in light of new information. As Fox 31 Denver reports, Colorado’s gun safety laws DID work and they DID provide a notification to federal immigration authorities:

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is shedding light on how an Egyptian national living in Colorado Springs was denied a firearm purchase before a firebombing attack on a pro-Israel group on Sunday.

CBI Strategic Communications Director Rob Low said CBI was able to confirm that Soliman attempted to purchase a handgun at Scheels All Sports in Colorado Springs on Nov. 22, 2024.

“Colorado’s firearm background check system worked as designed when it comes to the actions of accused Boulder terrorism suspect Mohamed Sabry Soliman,” Low said. “His application was processed through the CBI InstaCheck system, and shortly thereafter, Soliman’s attempted purchase was denied.”

CBI said Soliman never appealed the denial, which was based on information from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. He was also denied a concealed handgun permit through CBI and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 30, 2024. The denials triggered an electronic notification to immigration officials. [Pols emphasis]

It has been reported that Soliman originally hoped to plan a mass shooting attack against Jewish protestors, but had to change his tactics to using a makeshift flamethrower when he was denied the chance to purchase a firearm in Colorado. Moreover — and this is where Republicans like Evans are WAYYY out over their skis — Soliman’s rejected application for a concealed handgun permit triggered an electronic notification to federal immigration officials.

We don’t know if Soliman was investigated by immigration officials, but the claim by Evans and other right-wing voices that Colorado did not communicate with federal law enforcement officials appears to be unfounded.
