RIP Madeleine Albright, Pioneering Diplomat Beloved By Colorado

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

AP reports sad news that Madeleine Albright, the first woman U.S. Secretary of State with many friends in Colorado, has passed away:

Albright spent her teen years in Denver and went on to work at The Denver Post. She was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

Her father, Joseph Korbel, was the first dean of the University of Denver’s school of international studies, which was renamed for him in 2008.

“She was a trailblazer, a friend and an inspiration to so many of us,” Colorado Rep. Diana DeGette tweeted. “My heart goes out to her family during this difficult time.”

  1. I was reminded of one of her visits back to an event for the Korbel School at the University of Denver, introducing a speech by Condeleeza Rice when she was accepting an award.  I found coverage of the event — with several anecdotes of the evening similar to one that was in the Denver Post:

Rice was introduced by Korbel’s daughter — Madeleine Albright, secretary of state in the Clinton administration. Albright said her father referred to Rice as “his favorite student.”

“And this is why this wonderful black woman from Alabama was writing her dissertation on the Czechoslovakian army,” said Albright.

Albright recalled when Rice told her she was a Republican. “Condi, how could you?” Albright recounted. “We had the same father.”

The Honorable Madelaine Albright will be remembered … and as was said in the religion of her grandparents, "May her memory be for blessing."
