Stop Colbert

(This could be the most effective ad of the 2012 campaign season in getting the 18-35 demo involved on issues. Nicely done, Nancy Pelosi.   – promoted by ProgressiveCowgirl)

Rep. Pelosi is out to stop Colbert and his super PAC (Making A Better Tomorrow Tomorrow). She released a short video today describing her friendship with Colbert and blasting him for taking on her great friend Newt. And really, it’s about damn time.

On a more serious note, this is an “updated” version of the Disclose Act from 2010, which died in the Senate by a single vote (party line). The update? Makes it easier to support by eliminating a provision “that restricted government contractors and domestic subsidiaries of foreign companies from making independent expenditures.” The implication? Huge. So called Super PACs would be required to disclose their donors (hence the catchy name).

I’m very interested in what you guys think of this. Would it be likely to pass now that Obama has flipped? Less likely?

Interestingly:

The initial DISCLOSE Act passed the House of Representatives by a 219 to 206 vote with only two Republican lawmakers offering support. Both of those lawmakers — Reps. Mike Castle of Delaware and Joseph Cao of Louisiana — are no longer in Congress. It ultimately failed to pass the Senate by a single vote, with all 59 Democrats backing the measure but no Republicans offering support.

But now this!

“As you know, I think the outside super PACs and others is so disgraceful that I’m ashamed of the United States Supreme Court in their decision on United,” Sen. John McCain said Wednesday, in reference to the 2010 Citizens United decision that opened the door to unlimited spending by corporations in elections.

HuffPo has a great article, cited above; about the bill, not commercial. Really great run down of the differences and history. Read it.

    1. If you don’t understand it, if you’re a Republican primary voter, all you hear is “My friend Newt Gingrich” coming out of Pelosi’s mouth. BOOM.

        1. And anyone too stupid to know that Obama is the Democrat in the race probably can’t spell their name, so they’re probably not registered to vote.

              9 9 9 anybody?

        2. If avoiding confusing turnips is a requirement then we can’t inject any humor into anything.  And by the way that’s my biggest complaint about the most overly earnest wing of the left: humorlessness.

I love it.  It sticks it to Newt and lets  fans know that Pelosi is a Colbert  insider while delivering a real message.  Once again, I am left wondering what on earth it is about this excellent woman that is supposed to be so satanic.   Is it really just that San Francisco is shorthand for everything evil in the rightie lexicon?

  1. However, it must be said that after their Saturday on the Mall “Get out the Vote” “Restore the sanity”..in 2010…young folks partied and then the Republicans swept the mid-elections with their highest margins in 70 years..
