At Least He's Not Your Mayor

The slippery slope

In another edition of our long running feature “At Least They’re Not Your Legislator,” we take you to Hudson, Ohio, where Republican Mayor Craig Shubert is warning of a slippery slope of muddled logic that ultimately leads to one place: Prostitution!

During a Hudson City Council meeting on Tuesday, a discussion took place around allowing ice fishing on Hudson Springs Lake, which is something that local residents have apparently been requesting for some time.

As The Washington Post explains, Shubert had a bizarre concern:

Mayor Craig Shubert stepped in, and the conversation took an unexpected turn. His issue with allowing people to ice fish on the lake? It could lead to prostitution, the mayor said. [Pols emphasis]

“If you open this up to ice fishing, while on the surface it sounds good, then what happens next year?” Shubert asked. “Does someone come back and say, ‘I want an ice shanty on Hudson Springs Park, for X amount of time?’ And then if you … allow ice fishing with shanties, then that leads to another problem: prostitution.”

We’re admittedly not that familiar with the ins and outs of ice fishing, but perhaps it is much more exciting than we imagined.

You can watch the discussion yourself in the video below. We’re particularly fond of a point at about :30 where City Council President Chris Foster reacts with bewilderment to Shubert’s concerns:

  1. I'm sorry but this is not even remotely funny to anyone who follows human trafficking.

The evidence is clear that whenever men gather for "manly" activities such as fishing tournaments, hunting, and large sporting events, human trafficking and prostitution are present. This weekend's Superbowl will almost certainly be the number 1 human trafficking event in the country again this year (followed closely by both parties' political conventions). And the problem is so severe with pheasant hunting in the Dakotas that numerous NGOs train and send "spies" to rescue girls from all over the country.

Instead of making fun of this Mayor, perhaps as reasonably informed progressives, we should actually be paying attention to the research.

    1. Actually, both huffpost and Washington Post have published articles debunking the Super Bowl Hookerfest myth.  It just ain't so, apparently because increased traffic and extra cop presence discourage the sex for cash trade.

Google Super Bowl sex trafficking myth.

Now, ice fishermen?  Wonder what they do with those pike between catch and release?

      1. Absolutely not. I'm referring to research by legit organizations like https://www.notforsalecampaign.org/, and and https://combathumantrafficking.org/ here in Denver. And yes, I used to teach about this subject at a Colorado university.

And wow, I'm shocked that a paper like the Post, or Huff Post would go out their way to debunk a "myth" like that about Superbowl.  The very fact that there is increased police presence suggests the reality of the problem, as does this piece from the lead up to last year's Superbowl. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/28607449/the-super-bowl-remains-target-human-trafficking

My point is not about Mayor Shubert, but that this is no laughing matter wherever it occurs.

  2. Little did the wives of the ice fishers know that when their husbands were discussing fishhooks, they were really referring to the camp followers of General Hooker.

    1. "camp followers of General Hooker….."

Perhaps you're not aware that "hooker" is a legitimate job title that has been listed in the US Department of Labor's "Dictionary of Occupational Titles," and related documents. It's a job in the steel manufacturing industry, as I recall.

  3. The complete silence in the room afterwards is priceless.  But leads me to wonder if it is stunned silence, or oh-God-here-he-goes-again-don't-encourage-him silence.

  4. Ice houses properly heated can get cozy. Toss in the drink of choice and you never know. Snowshoe grog (brandy & peppermint schnapps) is popular in North Dakota. Gawd only knows what Ohio might use.

    1. Note to self: Do not accept invitation to ice fish with Mayor Shubert. He has peculiar ideas about how to spend time between bites. Like all Christian  conservatives, he mistakes his own personal freakiness for the sins of the entire populace.
