    1. Oops. It appears we've found some real corruption in the Ukraine.

Profit, not politics: What some Trump allies did in Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — As Rudy Giuliani was pushing Ukrainian officials last spring to investigate one of Donald Trump’s main political rivals, a group of individuals with ties to the president and his personal lawyer were also active in the former Soviet republic.

Their aims were profit, not politics. This circle of businessmen and Republican donors touted connections to Giuliani and Trump while trying to install new management at the top of Ukraine’s massive state gas company. Their plan was to then steer lucrative contracts to companies controlled by Trump allies, according to two people with knowledge of their plans.

      1. Always fun to remind ourselves that the GOP – which hates government we're told – LOVES government power which gives them access to riches all over the world!

    2. “Impulsive!!! Oh, c’mon, get one effin’ clue, why don’t ya’, Blanche??? . . .

. . . this has been on Putin’s agenda for months!!!   Jeeezzzus! Ya’ really think he’s gonna’ meddle for Ttump again in 2020 without oodles of seriously bigly more pro-quo???!!

    3. She actually managed to pry her lips off Donald's left cheek long enough to have a hissy fit? Wow!

Maybe instead of sucking up to Trump, she should get with the impeach-and-remove movement, throw her support behind Mike Pence, and hope that Pence names Blanche to be Sec. of State or Sec. of Defense.

  1. I found this an interesting read, though I am not sure that it has a larger point. Summary for people who are not interested in reading the whole thing: The writer Cory Doctorow has a Warren sign in his front yard and recounts how this upset a passing man into screaming at him.

    https://boingboing.net/2019/10/06/snowflakes-of-burbank.html

How this fine gentleman convinced me to donate $300 to Elizabeth Warren

And in the meantime, this woman has incoherent, unhinged, mediocre men like this guy so pants-wettingly scared that just seeing a Warren sign on someone's lawn is enough to send them into incoherent, uncontrollable, shaking rages.

    1. And guess who pays the lowest tax rate

For the first time on record, the 400 wealthiest Americans last year paid a lower total tax rate — spanning federal, state and local taxes — than any other income group, according to newly released data.

The wealthy, and only the wealthy, have done fantastically well over the last several decades. G.D.P. growth has been disappointing, and middle-class income growth even worse.

The American economy just doesn’t function very well when tax rates on the rich are low and inequality is sky high. It was true in the lead-up to the Great Depression, and it’s been true recently. Which means that raising high-end taxes isn’t about punishing the rich (who, by the way, will still be rich). It’s about creating an economy that works better for the vast majority of Americans.

        1. So they would like us to believe, however:

I already know what some critics will say about these arguments — that the rich will always figure out a way to avoid taxes. That’s simply not the case. True, they will always manage to avoid some taxes. But history shows that serious attempts to collect more taxes usually succeed.

Ask yourself this: If efforts to tax the super-rich were really doomed to fail, why would so many of the super-rich be fighting so hard to defeat those efforts?

              1. David, are you agreeing with those made up (sarcastic) numbers Madco tossed out?

                Here's the actual:

The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid roughly $538 billion, or 37.3 percent of all income taxes, while the bottom 90 percent paid about $440 billion, or 30.5 percent of all income taxes.Nov 13, 2018

In other words the top 10% paid 70% of the tax dollars, which given that their tax rate is only about 25% of their income, and their share of income is nearly equal to the bottom 90%, I'd say that's about right.

      1. I'm thinking of adding a new bumper sticker to the #NeverTrump sticker I have had on my car since he won the GOP nomination.

New, additional sticker:  "Impeach and Convict!"

  2. I think Trump just did us Democrats a giant favor. This article makes some very good points including:

A younger, quicker Biden might have nailed down the nomination this last week in response to Donald Trump’s predictably irresponsible attacks on him. He would have been all over the talk shows and on the stump. Instead, he has remained closeted, perhaps out of fear that if he does subject himself to questions, he will be stumble.

John Kerry was defeated in large part because Bush & Cheney, one who served safely in the National Guard and the other a Chickenhawk, were able to paint Kerry as a coward. Or more to the point, Kerry was incapable of fighting their lies.

Trump will lie so boldly he'll make Bush/Cheney look like boy scouts. We need someone who can effectively fight those lies. Trump has demonstrated that Biden is not that person.

Very useful to learn that before we make him the nominee.

    1. John Judis did write a good piece there, but I think he is wrong at this point: "She needs to think about winning an electoral college majority in November 2020, and that means backing off programs that raise the specter of higher taxes for the working class or that would allow Trump to paint the Democrats as cultural elitists."

Commentators advising a moderate course for victory to the Democrats should be championing one of the candidates who have made moderation part of their campaign. Harris, Klobuchar, or Buttigieg all need more attention to see if they have the organization and personal skills to be a successful candidate in the way the Biden apparently does not. If Warren tacked to the center as this writer suggests it would cut against the central argument for her candidacy and would be worse than campaigning on her established positions.

  3. Looks like the "Chosen One" has fully embraced his Godhood

    1. My Gawd!  Even Joseph Stalin pretended to modesty!  In the endless tributes to Stalin, he loved to be addessed by the familiar Dear Joseph Vissarionovich and praised for his modesty.

trump's Great and unmatche d wisdom is, in fact, exceeded by that of my parakeet.

      and my parakeet is dead!

      1. The Trump Doctrine appears to be:

A trillion dollars in deficits!  Billions for trade wars!  Not a penny for defense!

“Europe did not want them back, they said you keep them USA!” Mr. Trump wrote. “I said ‘NO, we did you a great favor and now you want us to hold them in U.S. prisons at tremendous cost. They are yours for trials.’ They again said ‘NO,’ thinking, as usual, that the U.S. is always the ‘sucker,’ on NATO, on Trade, on everything.”

But if Turkey moves against the Kurds, the S.D.F. could abandon camps to fight the Turks, potentially allowing some 10,000 captured Islamic State fighters, including 2,000 foreigners, to escape. United States military officers were trying to reassure the S.D.F. in hopes of avoiding such a scenario.

  4. Column: Trump hands the Kurds to Turkey. Beware, GOP lackeys: He’ll abandon you too.

    https://www.chicagotribune.com/columns/rex-huppke/ct-trump-kurds-turkey-syria-kurdish-gop-huppke-20191007-wtl6oii5evfsfczwjklavfwtqy-story.html

Trump’s Syria decision reflects his stunning ignorance of the situation

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/global-opinions/trumps-withdrawal-from-syria-is-a-gift-to-russia-iran–and-the-islamic-state/2019/10/07/47c9880a-e91e-11e9-9306-47cb0324fd44_story.html

    dumb, dumb, dumb

But maybe the Kurds refused to stay in Trump hotels, or invetigate Biden

  5. This next year could be one of the worst in American history unless Trump is impeached and convicted.

First, he’ll run the most despicable campaign in history including infiltration by foreign governments.  Next, if/when he loses he will challenge the election results and try to incite a Civil War.

This can only be prevented by insuring that he is not on the ballot.

    1. Impeachment or electoral defeat, I don’t think for a moment Ttump will quietly do a Dick Nixon; climb aboard a helicopter, smile, wave goodbye, and fly slowly away into infamy.  That’d be completely out of character, way way too grownup; Ttump never leaves anything but total carnage and complete destruction in his wake.

I expect he’ll have to be drug off kicking and screaming, probably in some type of physical restraint.  And, that’ll be after he tears everything down, declares martial law and/or a national emergency, discloses reams of classified intelligence, attempts one last gigantic extortion, and likely even tries to set fire to the White House (. . . blaming it on Obama, the media, Hillary, and a cabal of “deep state” actors).

      1. When Trump loses, it won't just be because of 5 or 6 million "illegal immigrant" votes, it'll be due to the Mexicans that hijacked the Electoral College and cause him to lose by a landslide there too!

      2. Yep. For some reason I have an image in my mind of #TrumpsterFire hauled out of the White House by law enforcement or by the military. It's likely he will completely lose his mind (what Liddle' he has), but armed law enforcement or military will need to physically remove him for his own protection and the protection of those around him.
