These guys got a fantastic review on the BBC, of all places. Hot little band out of Austin, TX with an interesting blend of punk, R&B and country.

Happy July 4th weekend!

  1. Or “composers,” that is. American composers, at that.

I’ll let the YouTube blurb speak for this one:

This is an excerpt from the 1971 modern classical LP, ‘Delusions Of The Fury’ – the full title being “A Son In Search Of His Father’s Face”… Harry Partch is a hugely significant American composer who not only made his own instruments, but also recorded compositions on a unique 43 tone scale. Partch’s ominous, dissonant music is filled with drama, intrigue and terror, yet after a few listens you will start to warm to the volcanic flow of his crazy rhythms. There is an ancient (almost tribal) vibe to ‘Delusions Of The Fury’, yet it was apparently inspired by relatively recent Oriental and African folk tales. In carving his own niche in avant garde music, Partch unleashed the caveman within and spewed out a furious musical torrent, unmatched – perhaps with the exception of French Zeuhl legends ‘Magma’… Which takes us on neatly to the video. Enjoy this incredible footage (violently reedited) of volcanoes Mauna Loa and Kilauea, filmed in the late 50s / early 60s. All due respect to the artistry and bravery of cameraman Art Carter who risked his life capturing this astonishing spectacle.

On a side note, Beck wrote a song called Harry Partch:

And here’s a fun video put together by a guy in Moscow, based upon a recording by Moondog:

This is a better introduction to one of Moondog’s compositions, but I like the visuals and concept behind the video above:

And here’s one of Moondog’s songs played by the British band Clinic (performed using a retro-cheapo electronic instrument called a Stylophone):

Bio on Moondog (who, on a side note, actor Jeff Bridges has said he’d love to play in a movie), the blind American “Viking” of New York City:

    1. That first Jim Carroll Band album (Catholic Boy), at least, is a classic. (Keith Richards and Patti Smith helped Carroll secure a record deal.)

His book The Basketball Diaries is worth reading, too. The movie based on it? I actually thought Leonardo DiCaprio did a good job as Carroll, but, IMHO, the flick was lacking.

  2. I think it means different things to different people.  This 4th I’m actually very melancholy.  Have a great, safe weekend everyone.

    1. I know I’ve heard that one before. But really listened to it? While there’s essentially a post-Watergate/Vietnam world-weariness expressed, it still sounds contemporary. Nice contrast between the Mayflower and outer-space exploration. A hopefulness predicated on R&R (rest and recovery). Soldier on, Pilgrim.

    2. You’re always surprising me with your videos.

I hope the weekend pulls you up. I’m always down at Memorial Day, but the 4th of July always pulls me up. When I sit in a crowd of people screaming and yelling at fireworks, it always reminds me why I love living in this nation of ours…

      1. It speaks to 4th of July patriotic urges, as well, what with it’s refrain of “Skyrockets in flight!”

Er, uh, it speaks to some kind of urges, at least, in its own mellow way.

  3. without a little Philadelphia Freedom, would it?

Oddly, this performance was recorded at the Royal Opera House, so I suppose we’ve patched things up somewhat in the last 234 years …

  4. Great post! I?m just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well – resources like this article are incredibly helpful. As our company is based in the US, it?s all a bit new to us. The example above is something that I worry about as well, how to show your own genuine enthusiasm and share the fact that your product is useful in that case. mid autumn festival 2011 holiday forum Singapore travel
