Minority Leader Mike May Being Sued for Sexual Harassment

  • by: Colorado Pols

From The Casper Star-Tribune:

The co-owner of the Holiday Inn on Casper’s east side, who is Colorado’s Republican House minority leader, in 2008 allegedly propositioned a female employee who was then denied a promotion after she turned him down, according to a federal lawsuit filed in Wyoming.

Rep. Mike May’s company, MARS Development LLC, also retaliated against three other employees who had complained about sexual harassment, according to their lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in April and later amended in May.

MARS Development LLC, founded in 2004 by May and Rick Hill, denied the allegations in its response filed last week.

“Defendant MARS exercised reasonable care to prevent and correct promptly any sexually harassing behavior,” according to the response filed by the company’s attorney, James Worthen of Casper.

A call requesting comment from May at his Parker, Colo., office, was returned by Worthen.

The lawsuit is in reference to incidents that allegedly occurred in October 2008. In December of 2008, May abruptly announced his retirement from the legislature, saying he needed to focus more on his hotel business, before later changing his mind amid allegations (by May) that the GOP caucus was being manipulated in discussions about who would replace him as Minority Leader.

  1. Representative May has always been a stand-up, honest, and principled leader in the State House.

I rarely agreed with the Minority Leader, but compared to a lot of what the Republican Party has to say, the caucus in the House lucked out with their minority leader.

His voice will be missed at the Capitol, and I certainly hope that any allegations aren’t true.

I also hope that this issue isn’t politicized. Rep. May is outgoing, and he did a grand job of working with Democrats in the Legislature to craft meaningful legislation.

  2. until it gets its day in court. And something worth mentioning here that seems pertinent,

Before filing their lawsuit, all plaintiffs filed discrimination complaints with the Wyoming Department of Employment. The department dismissed their claims, Worthen said

“In each case there was no cause or finding of discrimination,” he said.

        1. This thread isn’t about whether or not May did it or not. That’s a nonstory. It’s only a story because Representative May served and serves as the top Republican in the Colorado State House of Representatives.

This story was posted on Pols because Representative May served and serves as the top Republican in the Colorado State House of Representatives. It’s posted on ColoradoPols because of any relevant political news that may occur as a result of it.

I think any talk of Ritter is foolish, but it certainly earns a place on this diary where the discussion exists solely because there are allegations a politician did something bad. That naturally leads to other discussions and questions of whether not other politicians did something bad.

GOPwarrior is a fool, of couse, and it’s a foolish discussion, but if not here, then where?

          1. You don’t strike me as stupid.  So don’t post stupid shit.

The post was about something Mike May was alleged to have done.

            Period.

Any responses that had nothing to do with that, GOPChickenhawk’s response included, were off topic.

                1. And I apologize for raising such a firestorm about going off topic. I thought it was just an off hand observation on how rare it is these days when there isn’t another shoe to drop. The only thing I’m a true believer in is that we aren’t going to find out that the real reason Ritter isn’t running again is because he has, oh I don’t know , maybe a mistress and  a love child hidden somewhere.  And no I’m not implying that May does. May could be completely blameless for all I know. I’d say GOPers reaction was odd except that it was from…GOPer.

  3. …for posting those additional details

Mike May is my mentor and a father figure – he’s taught me almost everything I know about running for office

Rep May is a gentleman who receives compliments from everyone he works with, as shown above – I stand by him proudly

  4. and I’ve never seen the kind of attitude toward women that this allegation would require.  He’s a decent man and a family man and this just isn’t like him.

In truth, we are all weak and fallible so I can’t rule it out.  But Mike has earned the benefit of the doubt — and the fact that the Wyoming Department of Employment dismissed their cases re-inforces that opinion.

    1. you have no idea what you’re talking about when you say you’ve never seen the kind of attitude toward women required to perpetrate this stuff. It’s way more common than you think which means a significant portion of men perpetrate this sort of thing. I don’t think we walk around thinking a significant portion of the men I know and trust have perpetrated some sort of sex crime. We’re bred to be blind to this sort of thing. I’m neither here nor there with defending this guy.

I was referring to Mike, obviously. You imply I said I’d never seen it in any men.  Obviously, I’ve seen that attitude in many men — and quite a few women, by the way. But I’ve never seen it in Mike.   It’s not definitive proof.  But it will do to give him the benefit of the doubt until and unless credible evidence points the other way.
