Latest Gardner Bumble Gets National Attention

  • by: Colorado Pols

Earlier this week we marveled at Republican Cory Gardner’s seemingly endless capacity for self-inflicted wounds, the latest of which was a fundraiser hosted by a BP lobbyist.

Well, that boneheaded decision ended up getting national media attention that may end up helping his opponent in CD-4, incumbent Rep. Betsy Markey, in raising more money than he could have brought in to make it worth the bad press:

  1. having Rachel Maddow criticize Cory will HELP Gardner—assuming a few constituents have accidentally turned on MSNBC.  Now if Hannity should go after Gardner—-THAT would be huge.

    1. This is a badge of honor for Gardner.  I’m surprised someone actually tuned into MSNBC.  What do like three people in Denver actually watch her or the Bush Basher who used to be with ESPN?  I understand that an ad buy on the Weather Channel is more expensive.

      1. Surely you don’t think Glen Beck gets Dems to see the light and switch their votes. That’s not what it’s for, is it?  So, yes guesswho, badge of honor for your side and the people who are already going to vote for him.  Great fundraising help, that Markey didn’t have to pay Rachel for, for ours. Money wins close races. See it’s not so stupid after all. And many of the kind of Dems who participate, volunteer and contribute do watch shows like Rachel’s.

  2. Washington Post political writer Chris Ciliazza’s “Friday House Line” has Gardner 12th most likely party change race in country out of 435 House races, noting “Gardner’s prospects remain bright”. Pro-Obamacare and pro Cap and Trade Markey is toast, as is Maddow.

    1. My best wishes to any Republican wanting to run on a platform of repealing “Obamacare.” Letting insurance companies return to predatory claim processes is a platform real Americans can get behind…

    2. when you have to point to a DC race ranking to try and defend you candidate against the absolute SHELLACKING he has taken in the local press for 14 days, prospects really are bright…for Markey.

You realize her campaign now has prominent Republicans on the record calling Gardner “spineless”?  You also realize that she is going to use the Maddow clip to have another blockbuster fund raising quarter.  Which will leave her with a significant funding advantage that will allow her campaign to remind every single voter in her district that people in his own party think he is slimy politician.

This is not going to be an easy race by any means, but the following things give me a lot of hope:

      1.  Gardner’s campaign cannot message their way out of a wet paper bag.  Is Stan McChrystal running his press operation?

      2.  Markey has one of the most wickedly smart campaign operations in the whole damn state.

      3.  Apparently all of the Gardner trolls have taken to Pols this week.  Which usually happens when a campaign is worried about message.

And as for the #12 ranking…I would bet the Markey people want that number to sink more.  The more danger it looks like she is in, the more it will rev up the base and bring in money.  Markey usually e-mails me for money every time another DC pundit says her race is a toss up – and I end up giving.

But have fun with your conclusions, 6thCD…you are exactly where the Markey camps wants you, I’m sure – complacent, arrogant and not thinking strategically.

    3. You’re actually taking comfort in what this guy says? I know Gardner skips votes and takes his current job as a State Rep for granted to hang out with DC lobbyist, but palling around with DC reporters is a whole new ballgame.

      Good luck what that!

  3. that it will be a bad news day for a week and then everyone will forget about it.

Folks are a lot more concerned about jobs and the economy to worry about who Gardner is fundraising with.

    1. and their oil spill are costing jobs in a wide variety of fields and killing an awful lot of wildlife.

As to the economy, the folks he’s fundraising with are responsible for the disaster that’s befallen Louisiana and Florida’s tourism revenues with peoples’ inability to go to the beach.

      1. I think this is the worse ecological disaster in modern day history and it wasn’t the smartest thing for him to do.  And yes, there are a lot of jobs being lost as a result of it.

But the gulf is so far away for folks in CO.  They’re concerned about what’s happening in front of their face, not some place that could just as well be Iraq for some voters.

Most folks will listen, hear it, shrug their shoulders and then move on and worry about how they’re going to survive this recession.
