President Trump Says He Helped First Responders on 9/11

President Donald Trump

Because it happens so often, it is difficult to find the energy to maintain an appropriate level of concern or outrage whenever President Trump says something horrible. Today is one of those days where channeling an extra bit of dismay at Trump is more than appropriate.

As Chris Cillizza writes for CNN:

On Monday morning, in a speech to first responders and others impacted by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, President Trump took his fantastical memory of himself to new and not-at-all-appropriate heights.

“I was down there also, but I’m not considering myself a first responder,” Trump said. “But I was down there. I spent a lot of time down there with you.” …

…Let’s be clear about what Trump is doing here: He is associating himself — very closely — with the men and women who were the first to respond to planes being crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. People who continue to suffer health issues due to their jobs. [Pols emphasis]

(They were at the White House for Trump’s formal signing of an extension of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, which ensures first responders continue to get money from the government to deal with their issues.)

This is not the first time that Trump has claimed that he helped clear rubble from the site of the World Trade Center — there is absolutely no evidence to support any of this — but it is the first time he made the argument in the White House with actual first responders in the same room.

We’ll let Cillizza sum up Trump’s comments today:

“We should be appalled that the President of the United States is willing to say things like this — especially to a crowd who has given so much to the country in its darkest hours.”

Consider us appalled.

  1. Hmmm, . . .

. . . I wonder if this was before, or after, he saw  people (not ijut’s word) cheering because the towers had collapsed????

No one had a busier day that day . . .

    1. I find myself wondering about stuff a lot, lately. One of the things that troubles me is an inability to figure out just who the fuck is running this country. Mick Mulvaney? Steven Miller? Kelly Anne Conway?

The lunatic that supposedly runs the country as though Fox News is the real world and the rest is a TV show where he is sole script writer, spends his time playing golf and grandstanding.

The cabal of reasonable government types that stuck around to protect the country from a madman are gone. He surrounds himself now with only self-serving acolytes and family members.

We heard some MAGAT say this morning, " I can't vote for a Democrat because I am a Christian….and its , uh…you know about abortion."

He has no problem voting for, arguably the most morally vacant man to ever hold the office.

      Nothing wrong with that picture…eh?

      1. Yeah.  Torture and kill people, including children, through abuse, malicious intent, or neglect.  They are so-called "Christians" who supposedly hate abortion because it is ending a life, but kids dying in concentration camps is all good.

    1. The last two are not mutually exclusive so I would say both of those.

T***ps' narcissism is powerful indeed. He sees the world through a filter that none of us can really experience but we can all feel.

He is delusional, obsessed, immoral, uneducated and for him, and apparently his children as well, lying is just a way of life….particularly lying to yourself.  It is how you enjoy a privileged life without noticing the the misery around you.

It is how you can wear a coat that says, "I really don't care, do you?" when you go to visit incarcerated children who have been deliberately orphaned by your husband.

      1. Lying AND delusional AND greedy as fuck . . .

. . . “Emergency responders getting lifetime funds? I should get myself some of that sweet deal, too! Hey, I was there; I’ve got the bone spurs to prove it!” . . .

        . . . like a fly to a feedlot.
