Gardner Claims Democrats Want To End Airport Customs Checks

Cory Gardner Says Democrats Want to End Airport Customs Checkpoints

At a Republican communications training last Saturday, U.S. Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) warned activists that Democrats want to eliminate the border and end customs controls at American airports.

[The Democratic presidential candidates] said they want to “decriminalize” [the border],” said Gardner. “That means you in essence have eliminated the border–not just the border–but when you fly into an airport, why would they even have customs at an airport, right? You don’t even need that. That is in essence what they’re arguing for.”

Gardner’s comments came at a three-hour event in Broomfield, billed as a “comprehensive communications training,” featuring Colorado Republican party leadership along with Trump campaign’s Colorado director Jefferson Thomas:

Join Colorado GOP’s Vice Chair Kristi Burton Brown, COO Steve House, and Executive Director Lx Fangonilo for a comprehensive messaging training. Along with Trump State Director Jefferson Thomas and Gardner Campaign Manager Casey Contres, we will discuss specific issues, local concerns, and how to connect voters’ concerns to President Trump’s and Senator Gardner’s campaign issues.

As with many of his recent Colorado events, Senator Gardner surprised the crowd with his appearance. Focusing on what he sees as Democrats’ dangerous policy proposals, Gardner addressed issues discussed during last week’s Democratic presidential debates: healthcare, immigration, and more specifically, healthcare for immigrants.

His warnings on immigration in particular drew audible gasps from the audience. Gardner claimed that the Democratic contenders all said they wanted to eliminate the border, including ending customs controls at American airports.

Gardner: The bottom line is they want socialized medicine. They want to remove 167 million from their employers’ health care right now. And you can see what they want to do with the border. When they all raised their hands and said they want to eliminate the border- that’s what they said. They said they want to “decriminalize” it. That means you in essence have eliminated the border- not just the border- but when you fly into an airport why would they even have customs at an airport, right? You don’t even need that. That is in essence what they’re arguing for.  They want to give healthcare to people who are not citizens of this country, paid for by all of us. We contrast our successes, our victories and our ideas with the things they want to do- the American people aren’t there. The American people are afraid of what they want to do.

Gardner’s claims about Democrats wanting to eliminate the border are based on a segment of the debate when candidates were asked to raise their hands if they believed it should be a civil, rather than criminal, penalty to cross the border with documentation.

The Huffington Post’s Roque Planas explains:

Immigration violations and punishments, including detention and deportation, are generally enforced under civil law. But crossing the border without permission is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in prison. To carry out the family separation policy, the Trump administration systematically prosecuted migrant parents arriving with their kids at the border on criminal immigration charges ― leaving their then-unaccompanied children in the hands of civil immigration authorities. 2020 Democrats Overwhelmingly Back Decriminalizing Border Crossings In Thursday Debate, Roque Planas, Huffington Post, June 28, 2019.

Gardner told the Republican activists that Democrats’ nearly unanimous support for decriminalizing border crossing (by making the penalty civil rather than criminal) was the same as arguing for eliminating all border control, including removing customs checkpoints from airports.

Gardner was adding to President Trump’s frequent conflation of decriminalization with so-called “open borders,” a falsehood that was fact-checked by the New York Times last summer: “No, Democrats Don’t Want ‘Open Borders’.”

At no point in the June 28 Democratic debate was the idea of eliminating customs control at airports discussed, nor has any Democrat proposed the idea.

Gardner concluded by saying that “the American people are afraid of what they [Democrats] want to do.”

Besides Gardner, the other main speaker was Trump campaign staffer Jefferson Thomas who assured the audience that the Trump and Gardner campaigns are fully united.

“This isn’t just the Trump campaign, this isn’t just the Gardner campaign or the state party campaign, this is Team Colorado. For everybody who says we’re not all united the four of us [Thomas, Gardner campaign manager Casey Contres, and state GOP staffers Lx Fangonilo and Kyle Kohli], we talk multiple times a day. And that’s something that we need you to go out and tell your communities. What does success look like in Colorado? It looks like getting Donald Trump and Cory Gardner elected in Colorado. It’s not an either/or. It’s not successful if both of those things don’t happen. –Trump campaign Colorado director Jefferson Thomas, June 29, 2019

    1. How could you nazi it?? . . .

(. . . the difference between Senator Coreless and every Russian disinformation site, is that occasionally Russian disinformation sites will sometimes say something partially truthful.)

  1. In the 55 years since the Wilderness Act was passed (1964), Cory is the only Colorado senator, Republican or Democrat, who has never sponsored a wilderness bill. How about moving on this, Cory? You already know about the bill.

  2. The equivalent / reverse claim about Cory & the Republicans would be "we want to deport every illegal immigrant — and their families — and prosecute everyone who has helped them stay here and break the law.

I remember Gardner being strategic and ambiguous about his own positions and emphasizing downsides of his opponent's positions.  I don't recall him making up things never mentioned before.

For those of you who paid more attention to him over a longer period

     — is this a continuation of previous tactics?

     — if not, do you think he's lying out of ignorance, out of fear, or out of expedience?

    1. Cory has always been adaptable.

There is, though, a noticable new ease with which the senator departs from even a remote association with reality.

As it gets harder and harder to continually do the Pretzel dance…(remembering a favorite graphic)…at some point it is less painful to just fully enter the Wonderful World of Prevarication…Cory seems to have moved in.

  3. …if they believed it should be a civil, rather than criminal, penalty to cross the border with documentation.

Oops, Erik. I think you made a little boo-boo there. I assume you meant to write …"cross the border without documentation…"

And, oh, BTW, the protest, unike Conman’s dystopian fantasy, actually happened. The paper’s got photos: https://www.denverpost.com/2019/07/02/cory-gardner-protest-family-separation-mexico-border/

  4. Jon Murray of the Denver Post writes about Gardner's tenuous re-election prospects:

But Gardner, a Republican who faces a phalanx of potential Democratic rivals, was viewed favorably by 40 percent and unfavorably by 39 percent in the poll. That’s similar to how he has fared in the Colorado Poll since President Donald Trump took office.

Gardner’s thin favorability margin points to the difficult position he’s in, stuck between unaffiliated voters who disdain Trump and a GOP base that wants Gardner to toe the Trump line. In the new poll, Trump’s favorability rating was slightly higher than Gardner’s, at 42 percent, though 56 percent said they viewed the president unfavorably.

“The main reason Gardner fares more poorly than Trump is that only (63 percent) of Republicans hold a favorable view of him, compared to Trump’s 90 percent favorability among those same Republicans,” says a memo by pollster Chris Keating, Onsight Public Affairs’ Curtis Hubbard and campaign strategist Jake Martin.
