      1. According to Cesar Romero’s wikipedia entry, he refused to shave his mustache off when he played The Joker on Batman, so they just painted the makeup on over the mustache.

  1. and frankly I can’t wait until Hick sheds his ‘Ah shucks’ outfits and you all fall all over yourselves applauding the change.  On second thought, nah! It probably won’t show up on Pols.

    1. Does it involve shucking corn?  I’m seen Hick wear suits, but never anything with a corn theme.

RE: “Scott’s looking great”:  every Cosmo girl knows that you’re supposed go lighter when you reach a certain age.  McInnis must have pissed off his colorist, something fierce!

  2. with a capital L

I’m certainly voting for Hick, but this is lame lame lame.  Way to highlight as prominently as possible his appearance rather than the substance of your disagreements with him.  Oh, I’m sure the click-through goes into detail about his record, but you’re selling on appearance and making big light of his change in physical appearance, which shouldn’t be an issue in this race at all.  Stay classy, PN.

    1. But it was in the Denver Post first.

Faster than you can lose your mustache, the liberal hit group ProgressNow has jumped on Lynn Bartels’ report that GOP gubernatorial candidate Scott McInnis shaved, at least in part, on the advice of an image consultant.

      That report was yesterday:

Either spread your outrage around or lighten up I’d say. I think it’s pretty funny.

      1. I wasn’t calling out Pols for posting it, I was calling out PN for doing an ad like this.  And it’s hardly outrage, I just think PN is lame for making a political issue out of appearance.  They’re getting away with it because Scootie is a boy.  If they we’re going after — say — how much makeup Musgrave wore, there’d be some real outrage from the polsians.

        1. C’mon indipol, you have seemed to have a grasp on politics in the past — this is how it works. Elections are rarely about issues or important political differences, they are about the glamor and gloss that makes a front-page headline. Does it suck? I dunno, but I’m sure glad that liberal groups have caught onto this and are willing to play on the same field as Republican ones. I’d rather PN and others be objectively tacky and win than objectively right and lose.

          1. that’s Rovian politics.  And yea, maybe it’s realistic politics for all sides. Doesn’t mean you have to agree with it and stomach it just because things are the way they are.  I’m definitely a practical politics person, but for me there’s a line, and it’s here.  Making fun of a political opponent based on physical appearance is lame.

I’m just going by a personal barometer: what would I do if I was running?  I’d attack like hell against my opponent’s record and values.  I would not make fun of his/her hair, makeup, clothing, BMI, etc.  It’s just beneath us all (I hope).

            1. He was horribly corrupt, and then tried to make fat jokes about his opponent. His opponent just made it about the issues, and lo and behold, won the election.

            2. if it matters to the candidate, why shouldn’t it matter to others?  If Scooty is going to use campaign dollars to pay a beautician to make over his image, then he is saying that the image matters to voters.  He is indeed comparing his own appearance now to that of the past.  Now, I agree with Indi that the issues are what should matter.  But Scooty has shown the public that the beauty issue is a higher priority than coming up with a budget plan.  And if the candidate gives beauty that much weight in his own campaign, I have no problem with the public commenting on it.  After all, that is what he is trying to sell.  Refusing to debate others on matters of policy, while redoing his physical image should show people how shallow the candidate is, not how shallow the public is on commenting about it.

“Three or four years from now, we’re not going to have a conversation about jobs and all of that kind of stuff.”  -Scott McInnis

              1. Pretty much anything is fair game aside from families, but I wouldn’t go there if it was my campaign or political group. However, you make a good point that McInnis brought it upon himself with the McMakeover.

                1. per RSB’s comment above, Corzine tried to mock his opponent’s appearance and failed miserably.

I expect Hickenlooper won’t comment on McInnis’ appearance. Why should he? There are plenty of other people to do it for him. If asked, he can say he’s not interested in that and wants to stick to the issues.

                2. An opposition candidate making it a major plank against Scooty would be foolish.  But like Ritter bring up the “elk whisperer” in his debate with BWB, it can be an effective jab.

“Three or four years from now, we’re not going to have a conversation about jobs and all of that kind of stuff.”  -Scott McInnis

    2. …if he went through all of this trouble and pain to make himself look pretty for us, and then we didn’t even notice?!  I might not like him much, but I can’t be so cruel.

    3. Damn it, indipol, why are you trying to ruin everyone’s fun with that sensible comment?

I don’t think anyone takes PNow that seriously anyway–including PNow. Hence the humor they’ve been trying to inject with this and the silly Santa delivering the budget thing.

But damn you for being right, because it’s hilarious, and I want to laugh at all the McMakeover jokes for the rest of the campaign.

  3. Scott McLobbyist… Not only does he change before your eyes, he tells you just what you want to hear!

(appearance and policy change with the weather and place of appearance, your results may vary)

side effects include; Explosive oily discharge, nausea, amnesia, difficulty with public speaking, Hair loss, bloating, severe mood swings and complete loss of intellect.

  4. ProgressNow Colorado Launches “McLobbyist Makeover Kits”

    New website offers “McInnis-style reinvention”

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    CONTACT: Bobby Clark, Executive Director

    DENVER:

ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, launched a new website and statewide new media advertising campaign for “McLobbyist Makeover,” in response to recent attempts by former Congressman Scott McInnis to reinvent his public image.

“Scott ‘McLobbyist’ McInnis often feels the need to completely remake himself inside and out, depending on who he is pandering to,” said ProgressNow Colorado Executive Director Bobby Clark. “From flip-flopping on a woman’s right to choose to falsely casting himself as ‘the country’s biggest Tea Party candidate’ on FOX News, McInnis has never seemed quite comfortable in his own skin.”

In December, McInnis paid nearly $500 for the services of an ‘image consultant,’ who advised McInnis make drastic changes to his personal appearance (Denver Post, 2/1/2010). That is substantially more than presidential candidates John Edwards or Mitt Romney famously spent on their ‘image makeovers,’ and both of them were widely lampooned in the media. Earlier last fall McInnis launched a makeover campaign on the issues as well, with the help of extremist politicians like Tom Tancredo, in order to better appeal to his party’s ultra-conservative “Tea Party” base (Denver Post, 11/19/2009). Among other things, McInnis claims he is now “100% pro-life” despite having formerly chaired a Republican Party organization dedicated to protecting reproductive rights.

“If it seems like Scott McInnis is constantly changing his colors, it’s because he is,” said Clark. “Our goal in launching McLobbyistMakeover.com is to ‘highlight,’ if you will, McInnis’ shifting image.”

“McLobbyist Makeover” will collect names of those interested in ordering “McLobbyist Makeover Kits,” which will be available later this year. Also under development is an ‘interactive’ McLobbyist, which site visitors will be able to use to preview different “McLobbyist Makeovers,” and find the perfect combination for their tastes.

“It’s possible more Colorado citizens will prefer our interactive ‘McLobbyist’ to the one they see on television,” concluded Clark. “We’re just trying to give the people a choice.”
