  6. Democrats Offer Last-Minute, Pretend Defense of Fair Lending Laws, as They Prepare to Weaken Them

    In a final indignity, Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., has offered an amendment essentially striking a controversial provision from bipartisan bank deregulation bill S.2155 that would limit tools prosecutors use to detect mortgage lending discrimination, while acknowledging that the amendment probably wouldn’t get a vote — and wouldn’t be necessary for his ultimate support.

    Kaine gave the entire game away on Monday when asked directly about the amendment by Brian Cheung of S&P Global Market Intelligence. He admitted, “I don’t need my amendment to pass” to support the underlying bill. “I think the bill is solid as it is,” Kaine added.

    From the 2016 Democratic platform:

    We will also vigorously implement, enforce, and build on President Obama’s landmark Dodd-Frank financial reform law, and we will stop dead in its tracks every Republican effort to weaken it. We will stop Republican efforts to hamstring our regulators through budget cuts, and we will ensure they have the resources and independence to fully enforce the law and hold both individuals and corporations accountable when they break the rules. We will also continue to protect consumers and defend the CFPB from Republican attacks. We oppose any efforts to change the CFPB’s structure from a single director to a partisan, gridlocked Commission and likewise oppose any efforts to remove the Bureau’s independent funding and subject it to the appropriations process. Democrats will also continue to support the CFPB in enforcing foundational civil rights laws protecting against discrimination in consumer lending. Democrats condemn predatory payday lending, and will protect consumers by defending the CFPB and implementing strong new regulations.

    Democrats.  Like Michael Bennet, sponsoring S.2155, which guts the rules on banks.

    Democrats.  Like Ed Perlmutter, voting to support H.R.4607, damaging the power of the CFPB to regulate lenders, particularly payday lenders (those "predators" mentioned in the platform).

    1. I noticed that too. That was the final straw. That plus firing Tillerson distracts the media for a day or two from the Stormy Daniels' story.

      1. This is typical of the chaos and disarray Trump engenders.  Tillerson has deeply wounded the State Department and it will take years to recover after Trump is gone from office.  Hard to say if Pompeo will be any better in the meantime.  But at least he seems to recognize the threat Russia represents.

        CIA Director Mike Pompeo said he fully expects Russia to seek to interfere with the 2018 midterm elections, as it did in 2016.

        "I have every expectation that they will continue to try and do that," Pompeo said when asked during an interview with the BBC on Monday whether he anticipates a Russian influence campaign later this year.

      2. With the caveat that whatever comes out of this administration is impossible to believe, even the true stuff, the reporting I've seen is that Tillerson was told he was going on Friday, but not when he'd be gone.  That happened with the tweet.

        1. I doubt that. The Friday schtick is to deflect away from the Russia comment, plain and simple. Even if it were true, why send the guy to Africa on a diplomatic tour if he's going to be out? It's all Trump tantrum time, all the time.

          Mr. Tillerson learned he had been fired on Tuesday morning when a top aide showed him a tweet from Mr. Trump announcing the change, according to a senior State Department official. But he had gotten an oblique warning of what was coming the previous Friday from the White House chief of staff, John F. Kelly, who called to tell him to cut short a trip to Africa and advised him “you may get a tweet.”

          The move caught even the White House staff by surprise. Just the day before, a White House spokesman berated a reporter for suggesting there was any kind of split between Mr. Tillerson and the White House because of disparate comments on Russian responsibility for a poison attack in Britain.

  11. None of this by accident. One by one, the non-believers and the indicted are leaving. Trump is isolating and insulating himself, as would Putin, Kim, Duterte, …etc.

    Any American who supports this authoritarian clown is willfully blind. As I sit here listening to Dions' classic,"Abraham, Martin, and John", I am nearly moved to tears. My outrage that gunnuts, billionaires, zealots, and fascists have taken over this country sends my blood pressure to places it should not go.

    The continual lies, manipulation, heartless opportunism and oppression by the wealthy is approching historic levels. Not since the turn of the 19th century have we seen the naked aggression with which thieves, traitors, and terrorists stake their claim to legitimacy.

    I noticed in the story about teachers the phrase,"stripped of their rights". It seems to me that is a trend that will continue unabated unless the American voter does something about it. November may be our last chance.

    Republicans must be dethroned. 

    Period.

  12. The Kansas Sec'y of State, Kris Kobach, is having a heck of a time defending his voter suppression law in federal court.  

    A perplexing moment on Monday came when Kobach called Jo French, a retiree in her mid 70s, to the witness stand. French is one of six people since 2013 who lack a birth certificate or other citizenship documents, but have been approved by the state election board to register to vote. Kobach hoped to show how easy it was for people to be approved to vote even without documents.

    But French testified there was a burdensome process, even before she could get a hearing with the state election board, according to Talking Points Memo. 

    She said she was blocked from registering to vote when she went to get a Kansas driver’s license in 2016. She was born in Arkansas, and paid $8 in an unsuccessful effort to get her birth certificate, which she knew the state wouldn’t have because she was born at home and tried to get it before. She eventually got a copy of her family Bible, baptismal records and high school records.

    After hunting down the records, French said she got someone to drive her 40 minutes to a hearing in Topeka with the election board.

    Though she said she supports the proof of citizenship law, she said she was insulted that no one believed she was a citizen. 

    She also said she had become friends with Assistant Secretary of State Eric Rucker, and agreed to appear in court to make Kobach look good.

    The secretary of state requested to represent himself in this and related cases.

    Kansas Gov. Jeff Coyler (R), who is running against Kobach in the GOP primary for governor, and Attorney General Derek Schmidt, both declined to say Monday whether they still had confidence in Kobach’s ability to defend the law.

    At least he'll have a slam-dunk reason to appeal once he loses his case — incompetent representation devil

    Let’s Encrypt takes free “wildcard” certificates live

    In July of 2017, the nonprofit certificate authority Let's Encrypt promised to deliver something that would put secure websites and Web applications within reach of any Internet user: free "wildcard" certificates to enable secure HTTP connections for entire domains. Today, Let's Encrypt took that promised service live, in addition to a new version of the Automated Certificate Management Environment (ACME) protocol, an interface that can be used by a variety of client software packages to automate verification of certificate requests.

    Softsys already links to Let’s Encrypt from their shared hosting page, so they should be able to get you up and running.
