The Washington Post reports on the President's inspiring second inaugural speech:
After his oath, Obama gave a 19-minute address that, at times, had the itemized, politicized feel of a State of the Union speech. He mentioned tax reform, Medicare, Social Security, and Newtown, Conn., where December’s shooting rampage spurred Obama’s new push for stronger gun laws.
Obama also invoked a theme from his re-election campaign: that of patience exhausted. The president said that the gridlocked capital–and, implicitly, the Republicans who have fought his ideas–was moving too slow in an urgent moment.
“We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate,” Obama said. “We must act, knowing that our work will be imperfect.”
President Obama has won the last election he will face. Now, he will be judged by history, as will his opponents. Although there are many progressives who are dissatisfied with Obama, I have tried the last four years to see the challenge he has faced, and the ruthless determination of Republicans to antagonize and obstruct Obama. Obama has negotiated to no avail, and if anything, he has tried too hard to work with men who were not interested in working with him.
For me, this means my dissatisfaction is not with, and will never be with Obama. And instead of giving up on the President because all of my aspirations haven't been met in four years, it's time to fight all the harder on his side the next four.

Tech note: I tried using both kinds of embed codes in this post, and neither one worked. So I posted the straight URL to the Youtube video, and then it appeared! That’s easy and I like it, but this is the sort of thing you guys should document somewhere so others can take advantage of it.
Thanks for your patience. We did recently install a Youtube plugin to make posting videos easier, and you’re right that it doesn’t seem to work in comments. We’re continuing to work on these solutions, and we’ll document everything once we get a final configuration in place.
I’m having trouble with the right column not loading right sometimes. Not all the time, maybe 50%? And it only seems to be the homepage.

Nope, this appears to just be for posts. We still need to use embed codes for comments?
Sorry for the multiple posts, Guvs, just learning!
He’s missing his Hussein.
You’re welcome Goopy.
I liked that he straight out said that we need to deal with climate change as one of the key issues of our time.
Thought it was a really good Inauguration day all round. Good speeches. Loved the poem. Obama hit all the right notes. Particularly appreciated Beyonce’s mainly straight forward traditional National Anthem. I really hate the over embellished screaming diva versions. She was mercifully excellent. Nice Neil Young ” My Country ‘Tis of Thee” too.
That would be James Taylor, BC:-)
I like it when the First Couple walked down the middle of the street, nice as day.
Brain fart. Silly me. I knew that!
Speaking of brain farts, in re-reading this I see another one. It was Kelly something, who did “Tis of Thee” and Taylor who did “America the Beautiful.” She also behaved like a silly little twit. Guess I erased her from my mind.
Kelly Clarkson…whom I believe got her start as an “American Idol”…IIRC.
and I give up JeffcoBlue…ICYMI..?
In Case You Missed It 😉
I am humiliated… 🙁 …I blame it on age, …but it might be something else..I don't know. Thanks for the dose of unfortunate reality, harry. 🙂
One Sun Rose On Us Today
I have “insufficient permission” to post a diary, so I will post a comment here highly recommending Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco’s poem “One Sun Rose On Us Today.”
Take the 7 minutes to listen to it. Right now.

My wife and I sat, transfixed, through the entire poem. It is a great thing that Americans still appreciate poetry..and that was a really excellent piece of work.
Us 2.
This was the very first inauguration I can remember that both my wife and I had the whole day off.
While we caught a lot of great commentary from time to time, hit and miss, on MSNBC, for the most part we went with CSPAN.
I think your term “transfixed” might describe us. We actually saw it live, then, all kidding aside, watched the replays both early evening and again late night.
Mr. Blanco brought the streets to life, I could hear the busses, the cabs, I smelled the fresh fruit on the stands, remembered what it was like to look at the sky from the buildings I once worked on, and I felt this Cuban American gay man spoke for the vast majority of us. It was uplifting, mesmorizing, motivating, incredably moving the first time I heard it, and just as great the next two.
Kelly Clarkson absolutely nailed it. The bar is now so high, I don’t know who’s going to attempt “My Country ’tis of thee” again.
Beyonce drilled The National Anthem just every bit as well.
44’s Inugural Address signaled the end of the long national nightmare that was reaganism. He declared war on the hate machine that is the red party and their agendas against women, minorities, the middle class, the planet, and the right of kids to go to school without getting shot. He signaled firmly that the republican habit of indescriminately killing our military personnel in wars for profit is not to be tolerated any more. The motorcade, the walk, the parade/review, the Balls last night.
It’s our time. It has to start today.
I loved it and I’m not fond of most contemporary poetry. The sentiments are beautiful but what makes his expression of them so engaging is the way his words so convincingly communicate sensory experience. The way you can feel the sun, for instance. I generally get bored pretty quickly with poetry readings at events like this but I enjoyed Blanco’s reading from beginning to end and it didn’t seem long at all.
Is there a DVD available yet?
