We Are Apparently At War With Iran Again

Or the war never stopped, as CBS reports, it apparently depends on how generously you interpret the War Powers Act:

Iran accused the U.S. Tuesday of a “grave violation” of the two countries’ fragile ceasefire after the U.S. military said “self-defense strikes” overnight targeted Iranian forces, but with “restraint.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said an agreement with Iran was still possible, adding that President Trump wanted to either “make a good deal,” or no deal at all.

As NBC News reports, last week House Speaker Mike Johnson was forced to cancel a vote on a measure to reel in President Donald Trump’s war powers due to the probability it would succeed:

House Republicans on Thursday delayed a vote on a war powers resolution that would restrict President Donald Trump’s ability to continue U.S. military operations in Iran after it became clear that the legislation would pass.

Lawmakers will have to vote on the resolution in June, however, after they return from their Memorial Day recess.

That allows at least another week for Trump’s standoff with Iran to continue, gas and fertilizer price hikes to choke the economy, and public support for this nearly three-month-old misadventure to further decline. If enough Republicans do defect to pass a war powers measure next week, it could set off intra-party infighting that consumes the GOP’s attention at their worst possible moment politically.

Typecast MAGA cheerleader Rep. Gabe Evans won’t be among them, even though it would be the best thing he could do for himself politically. Facing near-certain defeat after voluntarily carrying Trump’s water in one of the most competitive House districts in America, Evans’ only lane left is to bind himself ever tighter to the Trump coattails he narrowly rode to office.

Even if the war ends tomorrow, which doesn’t look likely, Republicans like Evans are set pay the political price for the pain for American voters already inflicted and in the pipeline, literal and figurative. Voters get that this is a war Trump started with Evans’ total support.

And told you he ended. Repeatedly. But three months later…still hasn’t.
