Almost one month to the day since President Trump un-endorsed Rep. Jeff “Bread Sandwich” Hurd (R-Grand Junction) in CO-03, it appears that TACO Trump has changed his mind. Again.
On February 21, Trump blasted Hurd — whom he had endorsed in October 2025 — in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling against his tariff policies. President TACO announced that he was now supporting Hurd’s Republican opponent, Hope Scheppelman, on account of Hurd’s vote against Trump’s tariffs with Canada. As Trump declared via Truth Social:
Hope Scheppelman has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Representative from Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District and, unlike RINO Jeff Hurd, HOPE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!
The problem with this move was obvious from the beginning. Scheppelman is a right-wing weirdo who would be significantly more beatable in a General Election than the more understated Hurd. In the weeks that followed Trump’s un-endorsement of Hurd, that message finally reached the White House. This morning, Trump announced via Truth Social that he was once again all-in on the Bread Sandwich:
I met with Hope Scheppelman and her husband Steven, of the Radical Left State of Colorado, to discuss various opportunities to serve our Country in a different capacity than her current run for the United States Congress. Hope and Steven are wonderful and patriotic Veterans of our U.S. Navy, and loyal supporters of our Historic MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN Movement. Therefore, I am proud to announce that they will be leaving the Campaign trail in order to join my Administration, in a capacity to be determined.
Together with them, we decided that Congressman Jeff Hurd, of Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, should in no way, shape, or form, be impeded from winning the District in that the Democrat alternative is a DISASTER for our Country. Therefore, I will be fully supporting Jeff’s Re-Election to the House of Representatives, giving him my Complete and Total Endorsement! [Pols emphasis]
Hurd once again has Trump’s “Complete and Total Endorsement” (for now), while Scheppelman will exit the race in order to take some made-up job in the Trump administration. Perhaps the former State GOP vice-chair will be reunited with former State Party Chair Dave Williams in whatever nonsense job he currently holds in the Trump administration. If Scheppelman is a good negotiator, maybe she even arranged to get a ridiculous title like the “Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas” role bestowed on former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
The moral of this story is the same as always: Donald Trump is a man of his word, until he isn’t.
The more important point is that Republicans are absolutely terrified that they are going to lose control of the House of Representatives in November. Hurd’s district is one of many Republican-leaning seats around the country that is absolutely in play in 2026. If Trump is willing to embarrass himself in order to shore up a district he carried by nearly 10 points in 2024, then other Colorado Republican incumbents — such as Jeff Crank (CO-05) and Gabe Evans (CO-08) — should be sweating even more profusely than they were already.
