“Votes Have Consequences,” a campaign initiative led by former Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, announced Wednesday that it will be targeting 12 Democrats in Congress in 2010, including Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado.
Rep. Betsy Markey, who defeated Musgrave in 2008, is not on the list put out by the Susan B. Anthony List, a leading anti-abortion group.
The SBA List announced the creation of the fund earlier this year and hired Musgrave to run the program.
“We’re going to be assertive, strategic and focused in our efforts to elevate the cause of Life at the grassroots level, where it matters,” Musgrave said in a news release. “It is vital that Americans make their voices heard. Without action, taxpayers will be forced to foot the bill for abortion on-demand in the largest expansion of government-backed abortion since Roe v. Wade. The stakes are high. That is why it’s so important for pro-life advocates to go on the offensive.”
The program has a budget of $2 million, which is pretty small by today’s independent expenditure standards, especially when divided among a dozen races. The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, which the SBA List acknowledged it was mimicking with its “Votes Have Consequences” program, spent more than $1.5 million against Musgrave in 2008.
Here’s the list of SBA List targets:
Michael Bennett (CO-Senate), Blanche Lincoln (AR-Senate), Harry Reid (NV-Senate), Alan Grayson (FL-08), Debbie Halvorson (IL-11), Frank Kratovil (MD-01), Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24), Walt Minnick (ID-01), Glenn Nye (VA-02), Tom Perriello (VA-05), Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01), and Harry Teague (NM-02).
