First Poll of '10 Bennett Re-election

by: Arvadonian

Tue Jan 27, 2009 at 15:33:19 PM MST

(Now we know more about why John Suthers isn't running for the Senate anymore - promoted by Colorado Pols)

Public Policy Polling Survey is out showing that even though he is not very well known, Bennett bests 3 of the 4 potential Republican candidates they polled against him.
Arvadonian :: First Poll of '10 Bennett Re-election
The results are as follows:

Bennett--48
Tancredo--39
Undecided--13

Bennett--41
Owens--44
Undecided--14

Bennett--40
Suthers--34
Undecided--26

Bennett--43
McInnis--37
Undecided--20

Bottom line, Bennett isn't doing too badly for someone who until about 3 weeks ago virtually no one in the state had heard of...

Dammit,
just wrote a whole diary almost identical to this! All that hard work down the drain!

Nice catch Arvadonian

Owens is still popular
But will the wingnuts step aside and let him run? If he does run, I think he could win a primary because he's conservative enough, and because he has the best name ID of the people listed above.

Good news for Bennet, but I think this says more about the GOP in Colorado. People are so disenchanted with Republicans that they'll vote (or at least say they'll vote) for the Democrat even if they barely know him.

"Nice driveby spin" -- Libertad

The wingnuts won't have it
You mean put forth someone like Owens who can win an election, and isn't in fantasyland on every issue ?  The nutjobs just wouldn't can't tolerate that.

For these folks, maintaining purity through a rigid non-functional ideology is more important than keeping your party from being completely marginalized.

Owens & the GOP
Owens polled well because they weren't polling R's only.
If he runs, and has a primary- he'll get bludgeoned about Ref C&D and one or two other issues less memorable to most but still rankling to R's.

I gotta wonder why he'd want the job anyway. I understand real estate is in a deep down cycle, so JF may not be that fun. And I think RBS must really be painful.  But seriously- is this is best career move?

Maybe this will stop the Dems from forming the circular firing squad with Bennet in the middle
Just how will Bennet and Udall handle EFCA?

With Bush out & Udall in, Udall's excuse to sponsor and pass EFCA has evaporated.

Bennet is a known member of the business coalition ... the same one that likely supports billions in treasury handouts to private firms.

As someone said in another post ... "I'm sick of this. Nationalize those fuckers."

What you talkin' about Tadpole?
Maybe this will stop the Dems from forming the circular firing squad with Bennet in the middle

[ Parent ]
Well Willis, I'm talkin' 'bout all the Dem's beating the crap out of Bennet
and Ritter for the choice of Bennet.

I'm also talkin' EFCA ... just what will our Senator's do.

Check in - check out?

[ Parent ]
Really, you of all people talking EFCA?
Really, Tadpole, 'talking EFCA.'  Wow, go figure never expected that.

And I'm saying that whatever the Dems do it won't represent the fraticide that is today's Republican party in Colorado. Two years is a while in politics, and my guess is that whatever hurt feelings exist over Bennet will be (mostly) smoothed by 2010. I've been wrong before, and might be wrong again, but as I posted in another thread, consider this my child:

Let's review how well the AS's of the world are doing
with their message in Colorado looking at the last 4 election cycles, shall we?

LOST-both state legislative chambers
LOST-governorship
LOST-2 U.S. Senate seats
LOST-3 U.S. Congressional seats
LOST-9 electoral votes for president

Its really that simple and I am sure you've provided an expert diatribe detailing all relevant factors.

Our bailout money used against Employee Free Choice Act
Our TAXPAYER money is being used by the corporate elitists to oppose the Employee Free Choice Act.

Three days after receiving $25 billion in federal bailout funds, Bank of America Corp. hosted a conference call with conservative activists and business officials to organize opposition to the U.S. labor community's top legislative priority.

Participants on the October 17 call -- including at least one representative from another bailout recipient, AIG -- were urged to persuade their clients to send "large contributions" to groups working against the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), as well as to vulnerable Senate Republicans, who could help block passage of the bill.

Whole Libertard complains the working class is out of line for fightnig for better wages and health care, our taxes are being used those causes by corporate elitists.

Don't give me the bullshit about "big labor" and what the Democrats are going to do while elitists like Rick Berman are still around funding anti-worker groups with our very own tax money.

Don't complain, take action
Those backing EFCA must move on the chamber and colorado concern.

As partners with you against the right to work, pay check protection and good government you need to resurrect the coalition.

If Ernie Duran won't say it, I will. Go grab Redstate and Rep36 and take action. Rep36 is very involved at the chamber too.  http://coloradopols.com/showCo...

I just find it so interesting to watch what our Senators will do, say, propose, in their effort to make decisions on the EFCA.

[ Parent ]
bottom line
Bottom line if Bill Owens runs he will be in the United States Senate. If he chooses to and can run for Governor he will beat Bill
Ritter.

Ummm
Since the concept of term limits seems to be foreign to you, let's just say that Owens won't be running for Governor.

And I'll give someone 2:1 odds that Bill Owens is not our next Senator, either.

[ Parent ]
Adam
Owens could run for Governor again since the term limits are for two consecutive terms. He has been out of office for a term, and can run again.

great analysis wise guy
If you don't know don't say it so sarcastically, with such certainty and so erroneously.  Next time check your facts wise guy

[ Parent ]
That would make Adam
a wise guy, right? Just checking.

[ Parent ]
yes and thank you
RedGreen is wise and sagacious
Kretz is a wise guy

[ Parent ]
I'm sorry
But I think you're wrong. I believe it is for two full terms as Governor:

State Executive Department (Effective 1-1-91): Governor 2 terms 8 years

There is no note of the consecutive nature of terms, just the fact that the Governor can serve only two terms, as can all other state Constitutional offices.

If you can quote me a statute that says otherwise, I'd be happy to see, otherwise, thanks for playing Claude.

[ Parent ]
That's also why
Andrew Romanoff can't serve 8 more years in the State House starting in 2010, even though it says he can only serve 4 "consecutive" terms.

It's 2 consecutive terms maximum, at a maximum of 8 years, for the Governor's Mansion.

[ Parent ]
If memory serves
Dave Owen, who was once a Representative before becoming a State Senator, tried to run again for Representative 2-4 years ago after he was term-limited. There was no issue with it (though he lost the election anyway). The term limits, to our knowledge, are only for consecutive terms.

[ Parent ]
Wow
I stand corrected then. I'll take your guys' word on it.

[ Parent ]
It would probably go to the State Supreme Court
But on the state's web site it gives a helpful term limits chart:

http://www.state.co.us/gov_dir...

The table has a column that says "Consecutive terms that can be served1" and underneath is a note that reads:

1Terms of office are considered "consecutive" unless they are at least 4 years apart.

Therefore, since Owens will have been out of office for 4 years in January 2011, he is eligible to run for Governor again.

[ Parent ]
I think you're right...
The mildly crazy "US Term Limits" folks say that it's a 4-year time-out like you said.

Bo ain't running
while he was making a lot of money with his hedge fund group, I don't think the recent divorce (and all the baggage along with that) will play well for BO in the primary.

He's better off going back to lobbying for the oil companies.

The Republicans are failed human beings. They're dead. They've yet to learn how to raise themselves up from the dead. Indeed, they're digging a deeper hole than they find themselves currently in.

People aren't stupid. The Republicans have bet they are.

ColoradoBane, er Pols, do your homework for a change....
Your opening parenthetical says that it explains why Suthers wouldn't win, but if you actually read the poll questions, you'll see that it says Suthers had the highest R favorable to unfavorable and was the only R with a higher favorable in Metro Denver.  Combined with a generic tie, sounds like he could have won.  So much for your "theory" about why he dropped out.  I guess its just too hard to admit when someone in the opposing party shows a little character and statesmanship.

Jason Bane, didn't he get his ass handed to him when he ran for Jeffco Commiss?
Or am I confusing people and races ... maybe the vote was closer too. Maybe he just lost by a bit. Anyone with details or a diary you can point me toward?

[ Parent ]
didn't he get his ass handed to him
He was derailed by a Green Party candidate. We like to think of him as our Al Gore. He gets the Nobel Prize and an Oscar in a couple years.

[ Parent ]
The interesting numbers from a poll
would be Ritter's numbers.  As I have noted before, polling I have seen (and Ritter's own polling I understand)has his numbers below 50%.

Moreover, I understand that new polling has even worse news for Ritter.  His favorables have stayed pretty much the same (doing a good job, just under 50%) but his unfavorables have gone through the roof - nearly matching his favorables.

As I said in another thread, I think that Bennet may get caught in the crossfire over Ritter.  But it is Ritter that is most vulnerable of the state-wide candidates.

Even so
There is no realistic GOP candidate for Governor. People aren't so dissatisfied with him that they'll vote against him by voting for whichever lame candidate the GOP decides to run.
