Bennet Sets Off for a Ride Around Colorado

by: Jeff Bridges

Wed Jan 07, 2009 at 17:50:49 PM MST

Governor Bill Ritter's pick to replace the promoted Senator Ken Salazar, Denver Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bennet, will depart Denver on Friday to head out on a tour of the entire state.

Officially announced today, the tour has been in the works for a while now - and it's good thing, too. Earlier today Colorado Pols echoed pretty much everyone's sentiments and called for, "Less gladhanding in DC, more bus touring in Colorado--and right now, please."

Governor Ritter (who few can call loathe to make his own decisions after this stunner) will accompany the superintendent cum senator on the tour.

According to the release, Bennet will listen "to local concerns about the economy and other challenges." Huh? I'll give Bennet the benefit of the doubt on this one, but "economy and other challenges" doesn't give me quite the same assurance Bennet understands rural Colorado like Salazar's "land, water, and people." Though I'll wait to hear what Bennet says outside of Denver before passing judgment.

Details after the jump...

" . . . a tour of the entire state. . ."
Misses those who live along the I-70 corridor between Denver and Grand Junction.  Maybe next time . . .

Right...
But it's a good start. I'd expect a Salazar-style 64 county tour ASAP.

You'd have to think
this will include some sort of "roll-out" with interviews and media exposure.

I definitely agree that he needs to get out and meet his constituents, but in-person hand shaking and baby kissing is only part of the process. He needs to do the radio, television, and news conference rounds--the worst thing it could do would be to make him look bad, but since he's some kind of wunderkind he should be fine.

The worst move right now would be to hide him like John McCain did with Palin. He is who he is, and they should embrace the appointment--not just send him on a road trip with Governor Ritter holding his hand.

That's what I was thinking...
Granted, it's only been four days since he was introduced, but a Palin-esque rollout would be awful.

[ Parent ]
I would expect local media opportunities will be at each stop.
When they gat back I would imagine he will be making the media rounds.

I think this a good first move on Bennet's part. He's addressing the primary criticism against him head-on: lack of name recognition.

I am sure it is only the first of many many many steps to build up his profile.

Retirement in action does not equal retirement of beliefs.

[ Parent ]
Should be interesting
All things being equal, I should be able to catch the Grand Junction stop. We will see what he has to say, other than pander education to a college audience. But, like others, I have an open mind.

Sometimes, I guess, you have to let the inner bitch out.

[ Parent ]
"Senator, say hello to all the nice people"

I'll have to bring a camera when I catch his act.  You can't make this stuff up.

Aggressive.
You have to hand it to the guy, he's doing everything right so far.  What a great beginning of a state-wide let's get to know each other tour.  It boosts Ritter because people will come out to meet their new Senator, and it boosts Bennet because people will come out to meet their Governor.  Win-win.

[ Parent ]
I think so too
If he started with just media interviews then everyone would be upset he wasn't travelling the state. The root problem in a case like this is that there are only 24 hours in a day and people expect him to do everything immediately.

[ Parent ]
All I want to know
is will he be wearing boots, a buckle, and/or a hat?

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

Actually...
In his search for a Salazar-like hat, the BNC-like bolo, Bennet has now decided on his trademark clothing gimmick that sets him apart from hs Senate colleagues and lets everyone know that it's just a little different here in the new west...

ASSLESS CHAPS!

[ Parent ]
So...
His response to any negative attack will be
"that really chaps my ass!"

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

[ Parent ]
assless chaps are OK...
but there are certain bars Bennet might want to steer clear of on his trip:

"To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead". - Thomas Paine

[ Parent ]
What?
Is he David Lee Roth now?

[ Parent ]
Yippee-I-Oh-Tiyaaaaaaaaay!
Let try this for the logic games section of our test:

If nobody in the state knows him, then maybe he knows nobody in the state.  If that's true, maybe he is unprepared to represent the people of the state in the United States Senate.

Maybe he's a bad choice for the position and no quantity of chicken ala king, glad-handing, vouching-for, and introducing will correct.

Pisst
I disagree. No one knew a lanky politician from IL with a funny last name just a few short years ago and he's about to assume the Presidency.

Don't underestimate the power of a good Chicken ala King dinner.

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

[ Parent ]
Obama may have been 'new' to us...
but he was not a parachutist who glided into Illinois politics on the basis of business connections.

The folks on the South Side knew him in action as a community organizer.  The folks in the state government knew him as a State Senator in the numerous roles as a representative, dealmaker, conciliator, and legislative craftsman entailed in that role.

[ Parent ]
Jealousy
You're just jealous you were interviewed by the Governor and weren't selected instead of Bennet.

[ Parent ]
No one believed, last week, that an aging politican from IL could be Senator, either.
No worries with Bennet. He was born in India, and so can never be president, pending a constitutional amendment.

 For politics, geezers are golden.

[ Parent ]
They'll have chicken a-la-king?
Mmmmmm

[ Parent ]
It's the poulry version of Mystery Meat.
Who knows whether it contains chicken or ala king?
