New Statewide TV Spot Rips McCain "Water Grab"

by: Colorado Pols

As the Pueblo Chieftain reports:

John McCain is being attacked again - this time in television ads - for suggesting that the Colorado River Compact be renegotiated.

The new TV spots, paid for by the League of Conservation Voters, accuse the Republican presidential hopeful of wanting to rewrite the 1922 compact that divides the river basin's water in the West, and send more of it to the downstream states of California, Nevada and McCain's home state of Arizona.

The new ads, which began running on cable channels statewide on Monday, are the latest attacking McCain since he told The Pueblo Chieftain in an exclusive interview in August that the compact needs to be renegotiated to address the population growth in the Southwest.

Even though McCain backed off his statement a week later, the league's political director, Tony Massaro, said it's still an issue that will resonate with Colorado voters.

"This is a guy who has consistently touted himself as, 'I understand Western issues, and the guy from Illinois couldn't possibly understand them like I do,' " Massaro said. "But it wasn't the guy from Illinois who came into Colorado and put his foot in the biggest cow pie that you can put your foot in in Colorado. It was the guy from Arizona. Either he isn't that good on Western issues, or he knows how this plays and was playing to Nevada." Like Colorado, Nevada is another swing state that could go either for McCain or his Democratic rival, Barack Obama.

The league, which is a 527 political action group that operates independently of Obama's campaign, has spent about $300,000 on the ad buy. It plans to keep running the ads until the Nov. 4 election, Massaro said, adding that the group may expand the advertisements if it can raise more money to pay for them...

Like we said earlier
when this story broke, nobody knows how much this was going to affect the election.

If it's close though, voters on the Western Slope might decide that they should go with the guy they know HASN'T said anything inflammatory about their water rights. The guy who actually visited Grand Junction, instead of just talking about it and making promises to come visit.

Tom Kise, spokesman for the [McCain-Palin] campaign, said one or possibly both candidates will stop in Mesa County, which he called "a battleground county."

"One of them will be there before the end," Kise said.

Well, the Western Slope is still waiting for a visit Senator. Maybe it would be a good idea to come and clear the air about your asinine comments regarding water.

Mesa County a "Battleground County"?
Isn't that like North Dakota being a "Battleground State"?

[ Parent ]
It became a battleground
when Obama decided to put troops on the ground and try to fight for votes there.

The title came from the state spokesperson for the McCain camp, but I doubt he would have thought of it as a battleground before the Obama campaign decided to put up a fight there. Even if the GOP ends up winning Mesa by a wide margin (as is likely) it draws resources away from other counties where the GOP desperately needs votes (i.e. Arapahoe, JeffCo, Weld, Larimer.)

I know there are some nose in the air elitist
easterners who believe that those of us fighting for Senator Obama in our "does not matter to metro Democrats" county cannot make a difference but we have polls here showing that Obama leads on the Western Slope by 10 points.  Do you want those votes going to Republicans?  People like dslater, showing their ignorance, writing off a good portion of the electorate, are the kind of people who would destroy the Democratic Party in Colorado if we were to follow their worn out and failed methods of campaigning and slum-snobbery.  Senator Obama came here because he knows that some Democrats in this state no longer buy what we are told by the elitists.

And if you look at the latest poll in North Dakota, Senator Obama has just taken the lead there.

And how much are you willing to wager
against a Democrat from Mesa County becoming the next Speaker of the House in Colorado?

[ Parent ]
It's about the whole state
not just where we think we have the best chance. If you are right on the issues, you will have the upper hand no matter where you are campaigning.

This year Obama is right on every issue that matters to Coloradans, whether they're Western Slopers or Metro snobs Dems like me. :)

Keep up the good work WST. You, Club Twitty and everyone on the other side of the rockies are doing a great job. I look forward to seeing you reap the rewards in a few weeks.

I think the Western Slope kicks ass
Of course, my in-laws live in Grand Junction so I'm over there every year or so.
