Obama Outspending McCain 3-1

by: Colorado Pols

Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 13:46:57 PM MDT

From "The Fix":

Barack Obama is outspending John McCain at nearly a three-to-one clip on television time in the final weeks of the presidential election, according to ad buy information obtained by The Fix, a financial edge that is almost certainly contributing to the momentum for the Illinois senator in key battleground states.

From Sept. 30 to Oct. 6, Obama spent more than $20 million on television ads in 17 states including more than $3 million in Pennsylvania and more than $2 million each in Florida, Michigan and Pennsylvania. McCain in that same time frame spent just $7.2 million in 15 states. Even when the Republican National Committee's independent expenditure spending in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin is factored in (a total of $5.3 million), Obama still outspent the combined GOP forces by roughly $8 million in the last week alone.

More after the jump...

Colorado Pols :: Obama Outspending McCain 3-1
The spending edge enjoyed by Obama has been used almost exclusively to hammer McCain as both a clone of the current president and someone who is out of touch on key domestic issues -- most notably the economy. The assertion of Obama's spending edge has coincided with the collapse of the financial industry and a refocusing by voters on the economy to turn the election from a toss up to one in which the Democratic candidate has moved into a discernible lead.

While the struggles of McCain and his party over the Wall Street bailout bill that passed Congress last week after much sturm und drang have been well documented, the practical political impact of Obama's decision to forego public financing for the general election and McCain's choice to accept the $84 million in public funds has not been as fully explored.

Obama's fundraising machine has continued to churn in recent months -- bringing in $67.5 million in August alone and ending that month with more than $77 million on hand. (Reports for September are not due at the Federal Election Commission until Oct. 20.)

Obama's ad spending strategy has been based on the idea of stretching McCain to the limit in a series of non-traditional battlegrounds (Indiana, North Carolina, Colorado, Virginia), knowing that such an approach would force the cash-poorer Republican's hand at some point. [Pols emphasis]

That decision paid off last week when McCain pulled down his television ads in Michigan, a move due in large part to the prohibitive cost of continuing to run commercials in the Wolverine State. A look at advertising in the last week in Michigan showed Obama dropping nearly $2.2 million as compared to $642,000 for McCain and just over $1 million by the RNC -- a difference of nearly $600,000 in favor of the Illinois senator.

A detailed look at campaign spending on ads over the last week shows clearly how Obama is using his financial edge over McCain. In 13 of the 15 states where both candidates were on television, Obama outspent McCain -- in some states, drastically.

Obama has all that illegal
out of the country money coming in.  No wonder he refused public financing.

He is raising money overseas in other countries.

That's interesting, I hadn't heard that.
I suppose you can post a legitimate source, right?

Nancy and her McCain campaign overlords
are desperate. My five says her claim doesn't even have that much documentation.

I think it's today's McCain talking point
You know, the ones the campaign puts up for bloggers to spread across the Intertubes...

At least Nancy can go back to McCain's website and check off her contribution for the day.

(In all seriousness, it was a McCain complaint over the weekend IIRC; unfortunately for Nancy, it's McCain's campaign who appears to have drawn the larger FEC complaint of illegal funds...)

If that's the same complaint I read of....
....the Pubs don't have any sources.....except right wing bloggers on the internets!  Unreal.

I predict...
that after Obama is victorious you'll suddenly see a pressing of campaign finance reform from those who previously defended donations as "free speech."

I was too lazy to look it up.
What I think is fo funny about the R's pushing the 22nd is that they locked themselves out of ever having a 4 term president!  They could have had 3 with RR, although a lot of peeps suspected dementia before the end of the second. His open letter to Americans revealing his Alzheimer's may have been one of his greatest "speeches."  A tear jerker, for sure.

How to piss-off the media
It's like McCain has totally lost it. The base will vote regardless and they don't get to vote twice just cause you charged them up more.

This is a flat-out dumb move politically.

Even More Important
While I have no numbers, it is clear in state after state and Obama is spending massively more for ground operations.  There is simply no way that the GOP or McCain or both combined can come even close to this.  That is also why numbers are up in battleground states.

And finally, the only "maverick" thing that McCain has done that he didn't reverse course on in the primaries was campaign finance reform.  And we all know where that got him.  Right where it is.

So much for his good judgment.  The only maverick thing he ever did has just blown up in his own face.

If I were to be able to spend more than my opponent
it would be indicative of more support. That's what's happening here folks.

Exercise your right to peaceably assemble and reclaim the commons. Stop the militarization of America.

Actually, it simply means McCain accepted
public financing and the limits that go with it. Obama gambled on raising an astronomical sum ... and seems to have done just that.
Howard Dean first used the Internet effectively to raise money in 2004, Obama has taken it to the proverbial next level.

[ Parent ]
The next level is
International donations.  Obama is receiving millions from international sources.

Newsweek reported over the weekend that FEC auditors have asked the Obama campaign about a number of contributors whose contributions seem to violate campaign laws, such as "Good Will" of Austin, Texas, who listed his occupation as "You" and his employer as "Loving" and gave more than $11,000 total in $10 and $25 increments. Another questionable donor, "Doodad Pro" of Nunda, N.Y., gave $17,130 in similarly small increments.
"The Obama campaign has a track record of accepting these," Cairncross said.

[ Parent ]
Texas and New York are odd states,
but they are not international sources.  Also 11,000 plus 17,130 equals 28,130, much less than millions.

I'll ask again for a credible source.

Please and thank you.

but doesn't it also mean...
...that McCain didn't believe he could raise more than public financing would afford him?  That calculation may be more relevant to Sir Robin's point.

I'm not as sweet as I used to be.

[ Parent ]
McCain wasn't in public financing in the primaries
and raised a lot less money than Obama did, all the way through.

I don't see any reason to think McCain could ever have been competitive in the general election, with hardly any excitement behind him.

Besides, any money above the donation limits can just go to the RNC, which is used for exactly the same purpose that the McCain campaign uses it for. So it's not like he's hobbled with raising money, it's just that he's not very good at it.

Obama's Palestinian Donations here...
Earlier this year the Obama campaign returned more than $30,000 from Monir and Hosam Edwan, two Palestinian brothers in the Gaza Strip who said that they'd purchased Obama 2008 T-shirts in bulk from the Obama campaign Web site.

...thanks for the reminder.

You are ignorant
Palestine is not one of the 50 States.  It is illegal to raise money from other countries you fool.

Abortion is a great way to weed out stupid people on our planet; it gets them out of the gene pool ~ Nancy L Baldwin

[ Parent ]
You are ignorant
Money from other countries is perfectly legal as long as it's U.S. citizens who are giving it. As every person who donates or purchases items on the Obama web site must certify:

I am a United States citizen or a lawfully-admitted permanent resident.

I am at least 16 years old.

This contribution is not made from the general treasury funds of a corporation, labor organization or national bank.

This contribution is not made from the funds of a political action committee.

This contribution is not made from the treasury of an entity or person who is a federal contractor.

This contribution is not made from the funds of an individual registered as a federal lobbyist or a foreign agent, or an entity that is a federally registered lobbying firm or foreign agent.

The funds I am donating are not being provided to me by another person or entity for the purpose of making this contribution.

This is all spelled out in the FEC's safe harbor rules. If a donor makes that certification even though they don't meet the requirements, then the donor is breaking the law. The candidate's legal liability ends at returning the contribution once they are made aware that the donor falsified their certification.

McCain has returned many thousands of dollars in ineligible contributions as well. Even from a certain Nancy L Baldwin who apparently exceeded her lawful maximum by $2300 or more.

Non impediti ratione cogitationis.

BTW, I "adduced" this all by myself, you total fucking assclown.

I already pointed out the youth's marching to Obama
Many of you pointed out it was just ethnic "stepping".

Well the teacher that was forcing these students to do this via indoctrination was put on administrative leave.  Seems that she was a school teacher and was brainwashing students on the public dime.

That is a no no.

I told you there was something wrong with that picture!

Got up this morning and saw "nancy l baldwin's" posts and fired off another donation to Senator Obama's campaign.

Good practice
Because if Obama gets elected I think we will all be sending our money his direction as his government is ever expanding even at the expense of our jobs and our savings.
