Colorado Pols :: Perlmutter Endorses Obama
Today, Congressman Ed Perlmutter announced he is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for President.  Below is Congressman Perlmutter's statement:

"Colorado's caucuses are less than one month away on February 5, 2008. In advance of this important date, I feel it is the right time to endorse the candidate that has captured my imagination and represents the promise of hope and change for our country.

I have the highest respect for all of the Presidential candidates and their courage to run and stand up for their values and fight for our country's future.  I will fight for whomever is the Democratic nominee.  It is no easy task to spend countless hours on the road, away from family, in the spotlight, pushing themselves to the brink to find solutions to our most pressing problems and inspire all of us to participate in this great democracy.

I have known Sen. Obama since 2006, and my family has known him for many years. He is a leader who will fight for the same change I am fighting for -- making sure the hard working people of America have the opportunities to get ahead; making critical investments in renewable and alternative energy technologies, education and healthcare; working to keep our nation safe and secure; and restoring hope and optimism across this country.

I am honored to support Sen. Obama, and I look forward to working with him when he is the next President of the United States."

Great timing, Ed!

I give him credit for doing it now
It actually is a choice and means something. Of course, he made the decision back when it was assumed Obama was a sure thing.

Perlmutter has a very progressive friendly voting record
and probably really DOES like Obama better for President than Clinton. I know tons of progressives who preferred Edwards as first choice but also like Obama and will support him over Clinton. I certainly will.

Exaaactly
He waits until all the pundits have practically anointed Obama as the nominee and polls show an Obama double-digit lead in New Hampshire? Why not endorse him earlier?

Timing!

Hey

Obama came to the 7th CD and held a rally for Ed in 2006
Congressman Perlmutter probably feels an obligation to help someone who helped him.

or...
maybe Ed Perlmutter just thinks that Barack Obama is the best choice for president.

Indeed, if Perlmutter and Obama have similar ideas on what the country needs, then it makes sense that he'd endorse Obama; AND that Obama would campaign for him.  It explains everything!  This nifty little principle called Occam's Razor suggests that this is a little more likely than a theory involving payback or backroom deals.

How touchingly quaint
Nah, just kidding. I think you're right. But I still think the timing smacked of opportunism. This was not a Perl of wisdom.

It's risky
endorsing this early, since you could of course be backing the wrong horse.  I admire Perlmutter for endorsing Obama at this time, much the same as I admire DeGette for endorsing Hillary last month. Shows some willingness to take a chance regardless of who it is - good on them.

Agree
Besides, Ed Perlmutter is apparently a great guy. I don't know him personally but I know several people who do and they all have stories about his kindness and consideration, especially for aids and employees, going back for many years.  They all see him as  very genuine and caring.

I despise that sort of thing
Not angry at you, but the "risky" comment points to a serious problem that we need to address.  Why the hell should it be risky?  Are you suggesting that the next president will be vindictive and punish people for endorsing his/her opponent?  Someone who would act that way is not fit to be president of the United States, plain and simple.

I am a firm believer that things like that do happen (i.e - vindictiveness), and yes it is unfortunate.

For someone who ran a successful campaign I gotta think they are going to remember those who came out early and were with them all the way, and try to return the favor by helping them if they can.  That is not such a bad thing.  A case in point would be Obama doing a fundraiser for Perlmutter and then Perlmutter endorsing Obama early on, as Republican36 pointed out above.  Again, not such a bad thing in that case.

Good to remember your friends
Remember them.  Thank them, and express your gratitude.  A few hugs wouldn't be misplaced.  Maybe a nice token of appreciation.

Legislative favors using power given to you to represent the people?  Then you should go to jail for a good long time.

I don't believe that's what happened here, but any means.  Thank goodness!

Are politicians allowed to do that?
basing a decison on doing the right thing?
