Allard Won't Run in 2008

by: Colorado Pols

Mon Jan 15, 2007 at 11:55:19 AM MST

Remember, you heard it here first - on Saturday. Here's the story from the Rocky Mountain News:

Sen. Wayne Allard said today he will honor his term-limits pledge and leave at the end of 2008, creating a replacement fight that should turn Colorado into one of the country's biggest electoral battlegrounds.

"I just didn't think I could back away from the (term limits) commitment. It is a matter of integrity and keeping your commitments. I have never wavered on that," Allard told the Rocky Mountain News.

CBS4 Denver has a live stream of the press conference.

Suddenly, Colorado's 2008 Senate race is now Bob Schaffer's to lose.
Colorado Pols,
Change the Big Line!

Paging Congressman Schaffer, Bob Schaffer to the white courtesy phone please...
Because it's all about term limits and Pledges Count!

[ Parent ]
your shilling
is a bit tiresome...

[ Parent ]
Hey
Just because you don't like it doesn't make it "shilling."

As they say--the truth hurts.  Lord knows it hurt me this past November.

[ Parent ]
You
Sound very intolerant...shame on you.

[ Parent ]
What's with your name eier?
Doesn't that mean "the eggs of satan"?

[ Parent ]
Sounds like a Tool
;)

[ Parent ]
And
I mean it in the nicest possible way.

Eine halbe Tasse Staubzucker
Ein Viertel Teelöffel Salz...

[ Parent ]
One for the road
Time for Pete Coors to try again.
At least he won't be wearing a black hat in his TV adverts.

lol
That's almost as bad as Beauprez trying for this seat.  Bob Schaffer is our guy.  Hands down.

[ Parent ]
Is Bob Schaffer our guy?
Cause I wouldn't know unless you repeated it over and over and over and over.

"But every Republican in the world is a lobbyist…" -- Bill O'Reilly

[ Parent ]
I'm a party loyalist
and if Bob Schaffer is in he certainly has all of my support!

[ Parent ]
Oh, I get it.
How many nicknames did you register here?

By the way, welcome to CoPols.

"But every Republican in the world is a lobbyist…" -- Bill O'Reilly

[ Parent ]
pundit
Ha, good catch Oscar. Not only is he a republican party loyalist but a hack as well.

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

[ Parent ]
Wow you guys
are really hating on me.  What did I ever di to deserve this kind of abuse?  What's wrong with being a party loyalist and supporting Schaffer?  He's a man of his word.  Hard to find in most elected officials.  As far as being a hack I don't know what you are talking about.  I only post from one nickname.  This Allard thing has you all upset and very mean. LOL

[ Parent ]
Upset?
We're giddy.  Running an incumbent was the only chance Republicans had to hold the Senate seat.

You and the droning "Dr. Dobson has God-like Qualities" both registered here in the last few days, and given the tag-team you did on this thread--by the way, my first comment was not directed to you--I smelled a sock puppet.  My apologies if I was wrong.

"But every Republican in the world is a lobbyist…" -- Bill O'Reilly

[ Parent ]
Well....
I know with the last elections under your belts it's tough to imagine two conservatives finding themselves in the same place in Colorado.  But *surprise*...there's a lot more of us than you think.

I starting posting here since, as it has played out, the '08 campaign has begun in earnest.  If I wanted to do a publicity stunt for Schaffer I wouldn't be doing it here, believe me.  Me and Yeah Right! have formed a fine tandom in support of Schaffer.  I just hope he's running.

[ Parent ]
Hack?
So just because he disagrees with you it makes him a hack? What the hell are you then?

[ Parent ]
and at least Pete would know which end of the horse is up

[ Parent ]
I see Dick Wadhams is at the press conference.
I guess he's already running the show.  You know he's going for Bob Schaffer.

Give me a break
"I just didn't think I could back away from the (term limits) commitment. It is a matter of integrity and keeping your commitments. I have never wavered on that," Allard told the Rocky Mountain News.

If he never wavered on that he would have announced the day after the election that he was not running. Clearly he decided for a myriad of reasons not to run and then says this to try and get credit.

12 years of doing nothing followed by a fake reason to not run again. What a waste of a Senate seat.

Where all the cool kids will be on Saturday - Code War!

Wayne's World......
After 12 hard years as a Senator with numerous important legislative achievements bearing his name, our esteemed U.S. Senator, driven solely by his promise to serve only two terms and not in any way motivated by his crappy polling numbers, is retiring.
Now Sen. Allard can go back to Loveland and be simply Doc Allard, sticking thermometers up the butts of cats and dispensing horse pills.  (Unlike B.W.B., Allard probably knows which end of the horse is up.)
I wonder who will take up Allard's crusade over that most pressing issue facing our world today:  the federal marriage amendment.  Maybe Trent Lott has nothing better to do with his time than introduce that......

[ Parent ]
Clearly
You just despise Allard. If he would have ran you would have said be broke his promise, if he would have announced 3 months ago you would have called him a fool for doing that.

Are you also mad at Mike Shanahan because he doesn't disclose his playbook to the Raiders when they ask?

[ Parent ]
I don't despise him
I do view him as a waste of a Senate seat. We have som many critical issues facing us that we need Senators that will take an active intelligent role in performing their duties.

Allard just phoned it in. Or actually let the WHite House phone it in for him.

And I also find it hipocritical(?) for him to claim that he did it because of his promise to only serve 12 years when he very clearly was evaluating if he wanted to run again.

That's why I would be thrilled to have Schaffer or Owens run against Udall. That way no matter who wins, we get a good Senator.

Where all the cool kids will be on Saturday - Code War!

[ Parent ]
Would you vote for Owens or Schaffer?

[ Parent ]
Depends on who they are running against
Against Udall - no. And I would have a hard time voting for a Republican for the US Senate because the Republicans in Washington have been so horrible for the country.

But either one as governor against say Salazar, I would definitely consider it.

Where all the cool kids will be on Saturday - Code War!

[ Parent ]
Allard
Another Bush Republican bites the dust.

Schaffer
What is Schaffer bringing to the table in 08 that he couldn't muster in 04 when he lost the primary to Coors?

Schaffer has a rep
as a social conservative.  Coors is clearly a fiscal conservative.  What has changed since 04 that would lead the party leadership to think Schaffer could win in 08 when they didn't think he could in 04?

Salazar, Ritter, the legislature, Perlmutter, Musgrave and Lamborn.  The social conservatives were successful except for O'Donnell.  Of course, they came from the two most conservative districts in the state.  And, Dem's had legislative success in those districts.

I think Schaffer is the front runner.  If he loses Colorado will have turned the cornor toward a true moderate, live and let live state.  If he wins, everything stays the same as now because he will only have defended a seat, not captured anything new.

Good drama.

[ Parent ]
Very well said.
I think Schaffer could have this seat if he wants it.  I'm just afraid he let's McInnis have it.  Scotty's alright and I'd vote for him but my enthusiasm is pretty lukewarm for him.  And the social conservatives may very well sit it out--especiall if the GOP nominee for prez is Rudy or McLame--and then Udall could take this seat through the back door.

[ Parent ]
McLame?
Who is McLame? Why would anyone call McCain, crippled by torture in North Vietnam, McLame?

 For politics, geezers are golden.
by: BlueCat @ Tue Aug 16, 2011 at 19:19:14 PM MDT

[ Parent ]
He's a lame candidate. I meant nothing by his courageous service in Vietnam. He's a terrible Republican--great American.

[ Parent ]
Terrible Republican...
Can you explain?

[ Parent ]
The players are all different in this scenario
The R's have to have someone who can beat Udall, and Bob S. can do that!

[ Parent ]
Pete Coors for Senator.
He kicked Bob's ass once, he'll do it again.

So will anyone else Owens anoints, for that matter.

"But every Republican in the world is a lobbyist…" -- Bill O'Reilly

[ Parent ]
the big questions are.......
Will Owens make an endorsement?  And if so, for how long will it last?

[ Parent ]
Owens Endorsement
means even less now than it did in 04' as far as I'm concerned.  He needed to go, and with him, he can take all of his endorsements.  As far as I am concerned he fooled those of us who voted for him the first time by playing himself as a man of the conservative movement.  He's a joke!

[ Parent ]
Tancredo's out of the Senate run
http://www.rockymoun...

I know you guys think I am crazy, but I really think Beauprez should go on the line, even as a longshot. He wants it.

Crud.
I was hoping we'd see our first-ever President/Senator/Congressman in '08.

"We're below sharks and contract killers." -- Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), speaking on Congress's 9% approval rating

[ Parent ]
Bye Wayne...
Wayne Allard.  A nice guy and a really bad Senator.  Out with the old and in with the...  well... old?  Schaffer is a pledge breaker.  McInnis can't win in the Denver area.  Tancredo?  VIVA TANCREDO!  He wants to build a fence across the border to keep America safe.  Wanna keep America safe?  Build a fence around Douglas County to keep Tancredo from invading!!!  Here is a REAL darkhorse...  Hefley.  Character counts in this political environment for the GOP and he could actually run as the man who stared down the Abramoff/Deley ilk...  Longshot? Duh...  But interesting to ponder, no?

Pledge Breaker
Where are you getting your information?  Schaffer is NOT a pledge breaker!

[ Parent ]
you are correct...
You are correct...  Schaffer is the Norm Resnik black helicopter freak.  Tancredo is the pledge breaker...  So sorry to have confused that!

[ Parent ]
Bob Schaffer is a dirty liar,
at least that's what Pete Coors' ads said in 2004, accusing Bob of changing his position on Colorado's drinking age and then lying about it.

Republican Ramey Johnson still asserts that Bob Schaffer and his partner Alex Cranberg created a phony community newspaper called "Common Sense for JeffCo" for the purposes of quoting from it in attack ads they used against her.  Johnson was insufficiently pro-voucher for these two Republicans, who handed the election to Democrat Gwyn Green:

Schaffer would not describe his role at the newspaper other than to say he submitted a column that was published.

Joe Peters, who is the paper's contracted administrator, said the bimonthly began publishing in February and is owned by a group of private investors. He refused to be more specific.

Sleazy.

Is Bob Schaffer no longer on the payroll of Cranberg and Steve Shuck?  I hope not, because that would be a conflict of interest.

"But every Republican in the world is a lobbyist…" -- Bill O'Reilly

[ Parent ]
Schaffer is still on the
payroll according to a July 14, 2006 AP story about the campaign finance reports of SC Gov. Mark Sanford and Education Superintendent candidate Karen Floyd.  Says Schaffer makes $160,000 per year.

[ Parent ]
What?
I'll give you two things I'm very greatful to Allard for, first of all he has 99.9% secured a new VA hospital at Fitzsimmons. He has been the only politician to stand by this project through thick and thin. DeGette hasn't lifted a finger in 12 years and neither did Campbell, frankly.

Most recently I appreciate him securing assistance for the cattle in eastern colordo and introducing a bill on the first day of session too. That could very well save a lot of people in a very bad time, and I doubt many of you have been to Baca county in the last week but things are very grim. The governor did nothing about it and neither did our other Senator.

Regarding Shaffer, you must be a very angry person sir/ma'am.

[ Parent ]
Federal
I love how fast all the tough talking, anti-gummint, Libertarian, cattlemen put their hands out when they need help from a program started by liberal, pinko commie FDR.

I have NO objection helpting them.  Once again, it's the Republican/conservative hypocrisy.

"Politics determines who has the power, not who has the truth." Paul Krugman, 9/2010

[ Parent ]
Unfair characterization
IMO, the ranchers and farmers believe that one mission of government is to protect people.  I don't think it is hypocritcal of them to expect and get government assistance in a disaster like the blizzards.  Ranchers amd cattlemen would expect the government to help if there was a massive wildfire that burned the Front Range.

[ Parent ]
"Mission to protect people"
Sounds damned liberal to me!

It was the Dems who passed the first farm programs that encompass the aid the farmers are getting.  It will be the Dems who will pass legislation that will protect all citizens, as best as possible, against disease and health catastrophe.

I'll bet if you could take an accurate poll at this late date, you would find a lot of those folks with their hands out dissed the Katrina victims for wanting help.  I have no proof, but knowing how eastern Colorado votes would indicate that.

Protect the poor from disease?  Dems.

Protect the elderly from disease?  Dems.

Protect minorities from discrimination? Dems.

Protect workers in the workplace?  Dems, and socially liberal Nixon.

And on it goes.  "Protecting the people" from the vagaries of life has been a Democratic goal since FDR.  It has been the goal of the Republicans, since Reagan, to protect corporations and citizens of wealth, fuck the middle class.

"Politics determines who has the power, not who has the truth." Paul Krugman, 9/2010

[ Parent ]
I'll give it another shot.
Define specifically "middle class".  Household income, education level, etc.

I double dog dare you.

[ Parent ]
2nd, 3rd, and 4th income quintiles.

"Politics determines who has the power, not who has the truth." Paul Krugman, 9/2010

[ Parent ]
Mr. Quintile
Household income in dollars.  Education levels.  You're very interested in defending these folks in a 'war'.  You should know exactly who they are, right?

Cough it up.

[ Parent ]
Not necessary.
You asked for the definition, I gave it to you.  Specific dollar figures change all of the time.  Education is not part of the definition, although I would presume a general increase as the income goes up.

If you are very curious about the current quintillian (ooo, that was fun) break points, do the research yourself. It's not essential to me, nor will I do your bidding.

"Politics determines who has the power, not who has the truth." Paul Krugman, 9/2010

[ Parent ]
?
What isn't essential to you?  To be able to quickly define who you are 'defending' in a a 'war'?  You are mysteriously evasive in your bullet-point spouting. (Though I love reading your posts).

How's this: According to the NYT *snicker* the middle three quintiles encompass an economic range of (household income, 1 or two earners) $18,500 to $88,029.

I fall with a thud into that category.  I am a self employed small business owner.  Providing things like a 'living wage' with healthcare for entry level workers is something that would put me out of business. The war against us in the 'middle class' is waged on a couple of different fronts, would you agree?

I also noticed that you left out something in your list of Dem achievements, it was a particularly glaring omission on the holiday for Dr. King:

Dems: opposed civil rights act of 1964

[ Parent ]
I was agreeing with you
right up to the end.  Your Kool Aid addled brain let slip your time spent on wingnut radio or other sources.  It's really a hoot how these type of talking points suddenly crop up with the flying monkeys thinking that they are bringing up something original in the public discourse.  We see right through such antics.

Yes, I know that there were Dems who voted against all the major civil right legislation.  They were the old Southern pro-segregation Dems that became........Republicans!

Congress in 1964 was solidly Democratic, it was that same congress easily passed CR legislation, and I'll certainly tip the hat to the Repubs that climbed on board.

To say that Dems opposed the CR acts is blatantly false.  SOME Dems did, MOST Republicans did.

But yes, those numbers for "middle class" look fine to me.

BTW, a national (or state) single payer health care plan would reduce your labor burden.  I also believe that if a business can't pay a minimum (not "living", too vague) wage, the business model is flawed. I, too, have been a small business person way back.  My employees were paid better than average, and I was very competitive.

"Politics determines who has the power, not who has the truth." Paul Krugman, 9/2010

[ Parent ]
...just saying
...that things are much different now.  FDR also went much farther than W has dreamed of in order to protect the country while it's at war.  You are correct about the CRA, but I just wanted to show that labels historically don't remain accurate, so to spout FDR's social programs of being somehow representative of some of the more socialist-leaning Dems is equally inaccurate.  I say socialist in terms of the card-check legislation, windfall profit taxes, etc...

Thanks for your trenchant response.

[ Parent ]
just talking disaster relief
My choice of words may not have been the best, i.e "protecting people", but it is unfair to say cattlemen wanting disaster relief is hypocritical, that's all.

I disagree about Kartrina and know some ranchers who donated money.

Not all cattlemen are Republicans either - I know some who are Dems (or moderate Republicans).

[ Parent ]
Get Your Facts Straight
Fitzsimmons was in Bob Beauprez's District, not in the 1st C.D.  Did Beauprez lift a finger to secure the new VA hospital?

Allard is a national joke.  While he is a terribly nice guy, his primary interests are animals and gay marriage.  We need a leader in the Senate, not a back-bencher who embarrasses the state.  Time Magazine was right in naming Allard one of the five worst Senators last year.

Can anyone name one major piece of legislation that came out of Allard's office since January 1997?

[ Parent ]
here's a familiar slogan:
"Pledges Count. I'm for Bob."

I just posted this in another thread...
But at the risk of sounding repetitive I'm curious what you all think of this: Dan Caplis has decided to run for the seat.  Is he Schaffer's rain check?

Like he has a chance...
Must be a publicity stunt.

Where all the cool kids will be on Saturday - Code War!

[ Parent ]
Get Real
Money wins elections.

It will take a lot of discipline and money to win the Allard seat no matter who replaces Allard.  Rs need to hope that all the Senate wannabes (McInnis, Tancredo, Schaffer, Suthers, Owens) don't self destruct with internal fist fighting and a repeat of the divisive Coors/Schaffer or CD-5 (2006) primaries.

Allard starts with a war chest of $148,000.  Udall starts with $1.2 million.

To match the funds spent by Allard in 2002, Rs have to raise $5.5 million.

To match the funds spend by the Ds in the Salazar race in 2004, Rs have to raise $9.9 million.

If you were a business, PAC or other heavy donor in Colorado, who would you give money to ... the incumbent governor's party (who can hurt you really bad in the next two-six years if you piss them off) and its causes, or to an R Senatorial hopeful, gambling that he will not lose by the same margins as Beauprez did throughout Colorado?

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.  Thomas Jefferson

And just as importantly,
for an out-of-state donor, which is increasingly what the Colorado GOP has had to rely upon, would you invest in an underdog candidate for Senate from Colorado?  A state that elected a Democratic majority in 2004 and liked it so much they gave them even more seats the next time around in both houses, and elected a Democratic Governor to boot?  Where the 2008 Democratic Convention will give future Senator Udall lots of free earned media time, and the national narrative about Colorado's "blue wave" will have been repeated so many times you'll want to cry?

Or do you hold back and make a more strategic donation to a Senate race the GOP could win, say in Louisiana or possibly even New Jersey?

We'll see.

"But every Republican in the world is a lobbyist…" -- Bill O'Reilly

[ Parent ]
$$$
McInnis has in excess of $1 million already in the bank. He can match Udall and I suspect Schaffer would be able to keep up the pace as well if he were the nominee. McInnis and Schaffer are not Bob Beauprez and would be able to raise money.

Nor to mention that the CD-5 primary didn't end up having any real impact on the outcome...

[ Parent ]
Let's hope Nut Job Bob runs!
In the November 3rd, 2005 Highlands Ranch Herald, Bob was quoted as saying:
Liberals believe government owns private means of production.
Liberals are socialists? Give me a friggin break...

I'm willing to bet that Schaffer also believes that capitalism is central to the teachings of Jesus. Everybody remembers the Sermon on the Mount when Jesus said, "Thou shalt not regulate corporations, nor tax their profits." Wait, you don't remember reading that? Well, that's too bad! Don't you know that the writer of Matthew's gospel was just a liberal reporter, and slanted the coverage of the speech to leave out those remarks?

Bring on Nut Job Bob! I can hardly wait!

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason and intellect has intended us to forego their use..." -- Galileo Galilei, 1615

What are you smoking?
The Highlands Ranch Herald?  Is that a real paper?  You should get out more!
