Bennet fundraising for... Romanoff?

(It’s a long weekend and a slow times for news — but check out Neon Nurse’s picture from the Alamosa Alligator Farm.  You Rock, NN! – promoted by Voyageur)

How much wierder can CO politics get?

* US Senate candidate Ken Buck bragged he doesn’t wear women’s shoes.

* US Senate primary candidate Jane Norton questioned her opponent’s manhood.

* Former Gubenatorial candidate Scott McInnis allegedly plagiarized his paid work (three times!).

* Gubenatorial candidate John Hickenlooper wore a zebra-striped suit to the state Democratic convention.

* Gubenatorial candidate Dan Maes, a Republican who wants to be elected on his business record, is rumoured to have serious personal financial problems.

* Gubenatorial candidate Tom Tancredo, the Republican ex-presidential candidate who can’t stop calling people “illegals”, refuses to step out of the race as an independent, potentially giving the election to the Democratic party.

* Ken Buck was invited to Andrew Romanoff’s birthday party by Romanoff’s cousin/campaign staffer, Melissa Caplan, and showed up with a check.

* And now, Senator Michael Bennet, who was forced to go on the defense against an eleventh hour Romanoff ad made entirely of baseless attacks, paid for by the sale of former primary candidate Andrew Romanoff’s home, has decided to raise money to retire his former opponent’s debt.

I kid you not.

What’s next? Ted Haggard starting a PFLAG chapter? David Sirota taking over for Dobson at Focus on the Family? The Alamosa alligator farm selling franchises? I-70 is paved with gold? Celestial Seasonings getting in on the medical marijuana craze with a new “Doobie Zinger” tea?  Living in CO for twenty years, I’ve seen countless seventy-five degree days followed by blizzards the next, a flying Jiffy Pop-looking balloon hoax, and an annual mountain-town festival called “Frozen Dead Man Days”… but none of that wierdness compares to our politics!

Below is the email sent out today by the Bennet campaign to supporters, asking them to help retire the debt Romanoff incurred attacking Bennet.

“Colorado — It’s not just our scenery that’s colorful, it’s our people.”

Dear Nancy —

For nearly a year, Andrew Romanoff and I were locked in a tough race for the Democratic nomination. But both of us always kept sight of this: At the end of the day, we would come together as friends and allies to win this election, and keep the seat from falling to an extremist Republican.

As you may know, the campaign left Andrew with a debt. My wife Susan and I recently made a donation to help Andrew retire his debt, and I’m asking you to do the same.

This is what Democrats do best: We come together and focus on the future. Andrew is heading back to the campaign trail, to help Democrats win in November. He is a proven leader with a strong record of standing up for the people of Colorado.

Right now, we need to stand up for him. Please make a donation to help Andrew retire his debt today.

I know how strong we can be when we work as a team. So please help Andrew as you’ve helped me, and let’s all move forward to win this race!

Sincerely,

Michael Bennet
