U.S. Attorney Troy Eid to Run for Attorney General

(He was bound to run for something – promoted by Colorado Pols) From the Denver Post: Colorado U.S. Attorney Troy Eid announced today that he will resign from office the day before a new presidential administration is inaugurated and will run for attorney general in 2010. Eid will first rejoin the private firm Greenberg Traurig, […]

Bennet Sets Off for a Ride Around Colorado

Governor Bill Ritter’s pick to replace the promoted Senator Ken Salazar, Denver Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bennet, will depart Denver on Friday to head out on a tour of the entire state. Officially announced today, the tour has been in the works for a while now – and it’s good thing, too. Earlier today Colorado […]

No Gimmicks (Except for Ours)

Ah, you’ve got to love the Colorado Senate News website, which serves as the information (or misinformation, depending on your slant) hub for the Colorado Senate Republicans. Check out these two stories from their news section that were posted one after the other. Friday, Dec. 19, 2008: Deteriorating budget conditions require leadership, not taxes and […]

Technical Wrinkle Reported

We are getting reports that some users are having trouble loading the home page. This is not related to reports of hacking of the Soapblox network discussed earlier. The symptom of this issue–the top banner loads, but not the page itself–appears to be limited to Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers. We are working on this problem. […]

Schumer Heart Bennet–Who The Hell Cares?

As the Rocky Mountain News reports: Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, praised Bennet’s selection on Tuesday, despite political analysts – both Democratic and Republican – who called Gov. Bill Ritter’s appointment of Bennet risky. Was Bennet the strongest person Ritter could have appointed? Many had expected him to tap […]

The Economy Sucks, But We Don’t

The economy may be (way) down from 2007, but not so for your beloved Colorado Pols. In 2008, we continued to increase our traffic and visitors for a 25% jump over 2007 numbers. Page Views: 5,088,224 Unique Visitors: 535,015 That’s right, kids – more than a half-million visitors in 2008, and for the first time, […]

NM “Pay for Play” Scandal Snares Colorado Politicos

Uh-oh, as the Denver Post reports: Denver political consultant Michael Stratton and state Sen. Chris Romer were reported Tuesday to be tied to the New Mexico bond contracts that have ensnared Gov. Bill Richardson and caused him to withdraw from consideration for U.S. commerce secretary. According to an article by Bloomberg News, Stratton was paid […]

El Paso County Drowning Update #734

Continuing our, uh, continuing coverage of the debacle that has become of the great El Paso County/Colorado Springs “drown government in a bathtub” experiment. As The Denver Post reports, El Paso County is considering – GASP! – repealing TABOR. Seems ideology isn’t as cool when it turns out to be terribly damaging to your own […]

Groundhog Day: GOP Resurrects “Judicial Activism”

As the Rocky Mountain News dutifully reports: A group of Republican lawmakers concerned that the Colorado Supreme Court has favored Democrats in recent decisions demanded Monday that the chief justice address the issue before the legislature. Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey is scheduled to talk to lawmakers Friday about the state of the judiciary. The lawmakers […]

New Yorkers Say No to Aristocracy As Sole Qualifier In a Democracy

As billionaire Republican Michael Bloomberg dispatches his thuggish aides to presumptuously berate New York Democratic Gov. David Paterson for daring to consider appointing anyone other than Caroline Kennedy to the New York Senate seat, a new poll shows New Yorkers are incredibly uncomfortable with the idea: 44% of the state’s voters now say they have […]

Investigation Into GOP “Vote Buying” Proceeds

As a reminder, the Rocky Mountain News reported last week: A panel of three Democratic legislators and two Republicans will decide whether further investigation is warranted into vote-buying allegations against GOP Rep. David Balmer. House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver, appointed the panel this week to look into a complaint filed against Balmer on Dec. 16 […]

The Drama Club Caucus

I’ve essentially been at a loss for words to accurately describe how absurd I find David Sirota‘s (and Kos‘) hissy fit over the selection of Michael Bennet for the open U.S. Senate seat. Sirota, in particular, has been in absolute hysterics over this selection. Here’s an ummm highlight, So as I said to start, the […]

The Unknown Aristocrat

(Just because this is so deliciously entertaining.  Hehehehe. – promoted by Laughing Boy) As I said earlier, it’s pretty clear that Michael Bennet was appointed to the U.S. Senate solely because of his aristocratic credentials – ie. connections to money and Establishment power and Beltway insiders. It had almost nothing to do with his relevant […]

BennetForColorado.com

Not much there yet (you’d get suspicious if there was), but you can sign up for updates. We took a posterity screenshot so you can watch it grow. The domain was registered on New Year’s Eve. There’s also a quickie press kit up that features the 2007 New Yorker profile you’ve no doubt read by […]

More Bennet Reactions

Reporters around the country are figuring out that when Google asks “Did you mean: Michael Bennett,” the answer is no. New York Times: Mr. Bennet, flanked by his wife, Susan Daggett, and their three young daughters, said he would focus on health care, the economy and education, andhe promised to provide more policy details in […]

Michael Bennet, Everybody!

What They’re Saying About Bennet

Selected quotes from around the state and nation this morning. Fort Collins Coloradoan: Poudre School District Superintendent Jerry Wilson said Bennet has displayed his political and negotiating skills in heading DPS, the state’s largest school system, which has faced years of performance issues. “In urban districts, those political skills are vital to the success of […]

Who Succeeds Bennet at DPS?

With Denver Public Schools Superintedent Michael Bennet expected to be appointed to the U.S. Senate, who will top the list to replace him at DPS?

Alternative Theory: Dark Horse Superstar?

While we try like hell to get our collective heads around Governor Bill Ritter’s daring (he hopes) selection of DPS superintendent Michael Bennet to fill the seat of promoted Sen. Ken Salazar, and stand by our assessment that this pick defies all political common sense, we are always willing to consider possibilities. The chief pushback […]

What the Hell?!?

By now we’ve all heard the news that Denver Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bennet will be named Colorado’s next U.S. Senator tomorrow. Our reaction? What the hell? Governor Bill Ritter surely (hopefully) has a good reason for choosing Bennet to replace Ken Salazar, but from where we’re sitting it’s damn near impossible to see what […]

Senator Michael Bennet?!

UPDATE #4: Rep.-elect Jared Polis applauds Bennet’s selection in a comment below: “I have known Michael through our work in education for several years. He brings extensive business experience to the job, which is what we need more of in the US Congress, and particularly in our Democratic party as we work to get the […]

Ken Salazar “Too Nice?”

That’s the only nervousness expressed by the New York Times in an otherwise fairly glowing endorsement of Ken Salazar for Interior Secretary today: The word on Ken Salazar, tapped by President-elect Barack Obama to run the Interior Department, is that he is friendly, approachable, a good listener, a genial compromiser and a skillful broker of […]

Potential Replacements for a Potential Senator Perlmutter

Various media outlets have already reported on the circus that would begin in Denver should Mayor John Hickenlooper get the appointment to fill Senator Ken Salazar’s seat. Less discussed, except for a few diaries here and on Jeffco Pols, is what would happen should Congressman Ed Perlmutter get the nod instead. Perlmutter has helped turn […]

Jeff Bridges Discusses Potential CD-7 Democrats

Check out Jeff Bridges’ rundown of potential CD-7 Democrats posted over at Colorado Pols:

Jefferson County-Based Candidates

Renny Fagan

Fagan has made his interest known, and while he could make a strong candidate in a general election it’s hard to say how well he would do with the central committee Democrats. Fagan is a former state legislator, deputy Attorney General, and currently serves as Sen. Salazar’s Colorado State Director.

Andy Kerr

Kerr has been a fast-rising State Rep. from Lakewood, currently serving as the House Majority Whip. He is actively making his interest known as well, and could emerge as an opposite version of Fagan – his resume isn’t as strong, but he’s probably more well-known to the Democratic insiders who would choose the candidate. Of the Jefferson County candidates, Fagan and Kerr have been the most aggressive thus far.

Jason Bane

Bane almost pulled off a major upset over a well-known Republican in a race for Jefferson County Commissioner, winning more votes than any previous Democrat. He raised a record amount of money (more than $80,000) for a lower-tier race, and post-election results show Bane won the CD-7 part of JeffCo handily. This gives him something no other candidate mentioned here could use: Bane can say exactly how well he would do in the Jefferson County portion of CD-7. Bane has not actively sought support for a potential run, but his name has come up a number of times and he could be the sleeper in this race. (Full disclosure, he’s a good personal friend – which means I’m even more acutely aware of his political talent.)

Jim Polsfut

Polsfut briefly threw his hat in the ring for CD-7 back in 2006 before bowing out to support Perlmutter. Polsfut once ran for State Treasurer as well, and has a proven talent at fundraising. He’s also close with Gov. Bill Ritter.

Dave Thomas

He’s tried several times to win this seat, and isn’t likely to give it one more shot.

Sue Windels

Has a good base, but passed on CD-7 before and is coming off a tough loss in 2008. I haven’t heard that she would run.

Cheri Jahn

The term-limited State Rep. has her eyes on SD-20 in 2010, but might throw her name in the mix. She hasn’t made any noise about it, however.

Moe Keller

Keller is term-limited from her Senate seat in 2010, but this is really bad timing. She is the new chair of the Joint Budget Committee and would have to resign that post in order to run (see Morgan Carroll below). It’s doubtful she’d do that.

2008’s Top Story: The Historic Moment

Video courtesy colojason The Rocky Mountain News editorial board said it with eloquence we have no need to paraphrase: This nation was forged in the promise of freedom. For its entire history it has provided greater opportunity and liberty for more of its citizens than any other country on Earth. But it was born with […]
