If Rodriguez is in, what’s Fagan doing?

If according to the press release mentioned here, Rosemary Rodriguez is taking over the position of Bennet’s State Director, then what is Jeffco Dem, Renny Fagan going to do next?

Renny had entertained the idea of running for CD7 if Perlmutter had been picked to replace Salazar.

Is there any insight into his departure, or his future plans?

How Low Did Renfroe Go?

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports more of what Sen. Scott Renfroe had to say about gay people, women, etc. on the floor of the Colorado Senate yesterday. “I’m not saying this (homosexuality) is the only sin that’s out there,” said Sen. Scott Renfroe, R-Greeley. “We have murder. We have all sorts of sin. We have […]

Sen. Renfroe Tells You How He Really Feels

The Denver Post reports on initial passage today in the Senate of SB-88, which would extend limited health benefits to same-sex partners of Colorado state employees. Did you know, gentle reader, that the Bible declares homosexuality punishable by death? Scott Renfroe does. After a debate that saw one lawmaker quoting Bible verses and another calling […]

George Will’s pathetic attack on Feingold’s appointment solution

(cross posted at Daily Kos)Like most citizens, some of the arcane rules of government barely register a blip on our radar. But that is not the case this year. After a robust mobilization of grassroots politics, the people are paying attention to how their government functions and are asking questions about how it conducts itself. […]

Post Applauds Marostica for Pragmatism

Echoing our sentiments from last week, from The Denver Post: It’s always refreshing to see an elected official shed partisan politics in favor of pragmatism – even if the delivery is botched. Such was the case this week under the gold dome when Sen. Don Marostica broke ranks with state Republicans in supporting a bill […]

Reality Strains Ideology, GOP Unity Nationwide

Macrocosm for a dynamic we also see at work here in Colorado as reality hits conservative ideological predilections like a bus. The New York Times reports: Republican governors split sharply during the weekend over how to respond to the economic crisis, a debate whose outcome will go a long way toward shaping how the national […]

At Least He’s Not Your Appointed Senator

How much worse it could be, the Chicago Tribune reports: U.S. Sen. Roland Burris was interviewed by federal authorities for several hours Saturday as part of the ongoing corruption investigation into charges that former Gov. Rod Blagojevich tried to sell a Senate seat for personal or political profit, sources familiar with the talks said. Burris’ […]

“Swastika Guy,” they just can’t help themselves!

(Just…wow. So much for spin control – promoted by Colorado Pols) Based on comments in this post, I think we can assume our friendly anonymous hosts here at Colorado Pols are ready to move on from the “Swastika Guy” story. If that’s true I strongly recommend they avoid Colorado Media Matters, which is documenting the […]

Ayers/Churchill Smackdown!

Too entertaining to not mention, from the Colorado Daily: Two of academia’s most controversial left-wing figures – ex-Weatherman Bill Ayers and fired University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill – will share a stage on the Boulder campus next month. Three CU student groups recruited Ayers, a lightning rod of controversy during the 2008 presidential election, […]

Endnotes On “Swastika Guy”

So the story arc of this week’s embarrassing appearance at the GOP’s anti-stimulus rally on Tuesday by the mysterious “Swastika Guy” has pretty much run its course–unless you’re one of the people hacked off about how the intended point of that rally, opposition to President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus bill, got lost in questions of […]

Marostica Makes Nice, Sort Of

As the Colorado Springs Gazette reports: Having called a pair of GOP bigwigs “losers” and “has-beens” after being pressured to drop a budget bill, Republican state lawmaker Don Marostica remained defiant Thursday. Marostica, a state representative from Loveland who sits on the powerful Joint Budget Committee, said that he was pressured by House Minority Leader […]

Dobson Takes Sudden Interest In Fiscal Responsibility

Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family is taking its inevitable opposition to Senate Bill 88 to Colorado radio this week. SB-88, which would provide health benefits to the same-sex partners of state employees, is being hit with much less sensationalist spin than recent Focus state legislative efforts–compare this new, relatively dry ad (click below) to […]

Marostica’s true crime: pulling back the curtain

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) Marostica will apparently keep his seat on the JBC, but as penance will have to apologize to Mark Hillman and Jon Caldara. This is the best way for the Republican leadership to defuse what was rapidly becoming a terrible situation for them. The ousting option would have meant a […]

Republicans May Oust Marostica from JBC Post

Proving, once again, that if you can do something wrong, you can do something even wronger, the Republican leadership at the state capitol is apparently seriously discussing ousting Rep. Don Marostica from his seat on the Joint Budget Committee. Marostica’s crime? That he dared try to actually fix some of the problems with the state. […]

“Vagina DeGette,” Anyone?

In the spirit of a week already thick with examples of GOP regettable behavior, Colorado Media Matters dutifully reports: KHOW’s Boyles repeatedly distorted Rep. DeGette’s name with female genital reference Discussing President Obama’s signing of the economic recovery bill at a ceremony in Denver, 630 KHOW-AM’s Peter Boyles on his February 18 program repeatedly referred […]

“Has-Beens, Losers” – GOP Unity Fracturing?

Fresh on the heels of reports that GOP Senators are resisting their heavy-handed leadership similarly, the Rocky Mountain News reports: A prominent GOP lawmaker has gone rogue and will attempt to do away with a decades-old spending limit without any support from his party, the top House Republican said Wednesday. Rep. Don Marostica shot back, […]

“Swastika Guy” Fracas Enters Backpedal Phase

UPDATE: Good stuff from Westword’s Melanie Asmar: Malkin suggests to Rocky reporter David Montero that “Swastika Guy,” as he’s come to be known, may have been a “ringer” trying to discredit her by slipping into the mass of people waiting for a Malkin photo-op after the rally. But if Swastika Guy was a left-leaning operative, […]

More strong-arm tactics from Penry?

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) POLS UPDATE: It’s been reported to us that Sen. Al White has indeed removed his name from the bill in question, though he, um, continues to support it: a clear indicator of the pressure being brought to bear on him. Sen. Penry, you can probably pull your boot out […]

Caldara Displeased By “Swastika Guy” Coverage

Rocky Mountain News columnist Jason Salzman writes for his Big Media blog, having reached Jon “Dildo Art” Caldara himself earlier today: The Independence Institute’s Jon Caldara is outraged that the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post covered the “swastika guy” hugging nationally syndicated columnist Michele Malkin at Caldara’s anti-stimulus rally at the Colorado Capitol […]

I’m Not a Racist. I Eat Mexican Food

We almost missed this gem from over the weekend, but we’re glad we had a chance to share. Check out this story from The Greeley Tribune: A T-shirt Weld District Attorney Ken Buck is selling was imported from Mexico, just like many of the illegal immigrants Buck battles. The T-shirts made by Gildan, a Montreal-based […]

“Judgment, or lack thereof”

Media Matters’ home office: Michelle Malkin is up with her defense for a photo we posted yesterday (originally posted by ProgressNowColorado) showing the right-wing blogger posing for a photo with a man holding a sign that uses a circled swastika as the “O” in Obama.  The photo was taken at a Colorado rally against the […]

It Sucks To Be “Swastika Guy”

Image from Progress Now A fair amount of effort went into the production of yesterday’s anti-stimulus event at the state Capitol, which featured Colorado GOP leadership and elected officials, prominent conservative activists, and nationally-recognized columnist Michelle Malkin. Republican bloggers and talk-show hosts pumped the event. They really wanted this thing to stand out, to galvanize […]

GOP Charms At Anti-Stimulus Rally

We’re collecting reports and photos from the Colorado GOP protest rally against President Obama’s signing of the stimulus bill, held today at the Capitol. We’re expecting some video and other highlights from the event, but a couple of people have already sent us photos of this colorful guy and his swell little sign: As you […]

Coffman: Lack of Regulation a Problem

After spewing the traditional Republican talking points about all the bad things contained in the stimulus package signed into law today by President Barack Obama (in Denver, no less), Republican freshman congressman Mike Coffman actually decided to turn on his own brain and stray away from the “free market will save us all” rhetoric.

From The Columbine Courier:

In a break from traditional Republican ideology, Coffman said a lack of regulation led to the current economic morass.

“The demise of this economy was really a failure of government to properly regulate the economy,” Coffman said. “We had these subprime loans infecting a lot of balance sheets. I don’t see the appropriate oversight there, and it eventually brought the economy down.”

The lack of discipline wasn’t limited to profit-seeking banks, Coffman said.

“Essentially, the problem was spending beyond our means,” the congressman said. “Too much easy money, too much easy credit, and spending beyond our means as individuals and collectively as a nation. I don’t know how, again, spending and borrowing is going to be the cure here. It’s a real concern.”

Coffman, of course, doesn’t have an answer of his own for what should have been done – specifically – to fix the economy. But at least he shows that he may be willing to break the party line on the talking points that really make no sense at all. Like pretending a lack of regulation wasn’t the problem, for example. Because Republicans need leaders who can sound reasonable, for a change.

Stimulus Liveblogging, Events Today

A brief roundup: Nice podium, Governor. Local Center for Independent Media affiliate Colorado Independent is live-blogging President Barack Obama’s stimulus bill signing ceremony at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science today, as is columnist David Sirota for national liberal blog Open Left. Several Rocky Mountain News reporters are also live-updating. Republicans are protesting the […]
