Anatomy of a Colorado PERA Pension Contract Breach. (Part 2 of 2.)

January 2008 U.S. Government Accountability Office, “State and Local Government Retiree Benefits: Current Funded Status of Pension and Health Benefits,” (GAO-08-223.)  The GAO report notes on p. 15, “Many experts and officials to whom we spoke consider a funded ratio of 80 percent to be sufficient for public plans for a couple of reasons. First, […]

Colorado Department of Corrections Director Murdered

UPDATE #2: ACLU of Colorado Executive Director Nathan Woodliff-Stanley: "The ACLU of Colorado is profoundly saddened to learn of the death of Tom Clements, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections. We send our deepest sympathies to Mr. Clements’ family. "During his short two-year tenure, Mr. Clements took significant strides to protect the civil rights […]

Economics and geology driving factors behind where drilling happens, not policy

Colorado just had a record breaking year for oil production. According to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission director, the state has “been adding at least 2,000 new wells per year for the past nine years.” Oil production in the U.S. is at the highest levels in 20 years. New Department of Interior data […]

Oil shale: Energy’s pink unicorn

Grover Norquist, founder of the right wing, anti-tax group Americans for Tax Reform, recently spoke out about the folly of spending tax dollars on pink unicorns, since they don’t exist. Following his logic, government shouldn’t create handouts for oil shale, since it doesn’t exist as an energy source.

We want to see if Mr. Norquist is willing to join us in calling for an end to all oil shale subsidies.

NRCC Cheesily Goes After Joe Miklosi

Here’s a new ad from the National Republican Congressional Committee, attacking CD-6 Democratic candidate Joe Miklosi on health care. Reflecting a degree of concern over the challenge Miklosi represents to incumbent GOP Rep. Mike Coffman, this well-produced ad hits Miklosi for his support in 2009 for Colorado House Bill 1273. HB09-1273, as some of you […]

Tanc in the Tank for Amendment 64

Tom Tancredo, that unlikeliest of progressive allies, has reiterated his opposition to marijuana prohibition (first announced, if I recall correctly, in a Denver newspaper editorial) and officially endorsed Amendment 64. His endorsement appeared originally in the Colorado Springs Gazette on September 21st, 2012, and has been preserved for posterity on the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana […]

#oilshalefail – Another boondoggle by Lamborn

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) Speaker of the House John Boehner is bringing his controversial highway bill (H.R. 7) to the floor this week. The Speaker has included Rep. Doug Lamborn’s oil shale boondoggle (H.R. 3408) as one of his funding sources. Since oil shale doesn’t actually generate any money, we thought pointing out […]

Legislative Reapportionment Maps Affirmed By Colorado Supreme Court

UPDATE #4: FOX 31’s Eli Stokols has reaction from Colorado GOP chairman Ryan Call: “I am incredibly disappointed that the Supreme Court has chosen to ignore countless hours of public testimony and rubber-stamp the Democrats’ highly partisan maps,” said Colorado GOP Chairman Ryan Call. “The reapportionment process is clearly broken; it allowed the Democrats to […]

Reapportionment: All Over But The Whining?

UPDATE #3: It may be a “done deal” constitutionally (see below), but as FOX 31’s Eli Stokols reports, there are some seriously hacked off Republicans in Greenwood Village tonight. Republicans are crying foul after the lone independent on the 11-member reapportionment commission again cast the deciding vote in favor of new maps proposed by Democrats […]

Note to Hick & Hancock: Why Occupy Colorado Is Relevant

(any frontpaging is greatly appreciated!) I think I’m the only 31-year-old who has ever run for office twice and lost both times. Sometimes, I look in astonishment at people who have actually won, wondering what special wisdom they carried that journeyed them to victory. Governor John Hickenlooper and Mayor Michael Hancock, to my best knowledge, […]
