CSU board meets Tuesday on chancellor, president

The CSU Board of Governors just posted an agenda for a special meeting Tuesday to consider appointing a chancellor and president.

The naming of Tony Frank, the current interim president, to the permanent position on the Fort Collins campus, likely won’t generate much controversy. He has a lot of faculty support.

Naming Joe Blake as chancellor will have significant opposition, I suspect. Blake was named as the sole finalist for the position in a May 5 executive session that prompted a lawsuit by the Coloradoan, Pueblo Chieftain and Colorado Independent. The three media organizations allege that the board violated the open meetings act several times in the session.

A district judge ruled Thursday that there was “reasonable belief” of violation and will review the recording of the executive session to determine if there were violations of the Colorado Open Meetings Law.

Additionally, Common Cause, Colorado Ethics Watch and New Era Colorado called Thursday for CSU to begin a new chancellor search process.

The agenda for the Tuesday session is here:

Please note the specificity with each agenda item, then compare that agenda to the May 5 posting. More accurately, they didn’t even post an agenda on the Web site, just a vague notice of public meeting: http://csusystem.edu/pages/doc…

The lack of appropriate notice was one of the grounds cited by the media plaintiffs in their lawsuit.

A final note: I’ll be taking one of those furlough thingies next week so I won’t be posting. If you’re interested in following this issue, I’d urge you to check Coloradoan.com. Another good way to track developments is to follow Trevor Hughes on Twitter, @Coloradoan_TH
