  1. Nothing to worry about, right Gerbils?

David Leonhardt of the New York Times has a few concerns:

For all of the illicitness surrounding President Trump and Russia, his motives have never been clear. If anything, a relationship of convenience between Trump and Vladimir Putin seemed more likely than an actual alliance.

The past week has increased the chances that something akin to an alliance exists.

On his European trip, Trump repeatedly behaved as if he were trying to advance Putin’s interests. Meanwhile, back in Washington, we learned of an attempted secret communication channel between Jared Kushner — the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser — and Putin’s Russia.

I recommend four quick reads for anyone trying to understand the latest dark turn in the Russia story:

    — Anne Applebaum, in The Washington Post, on the deterioration of U.S.-Europe relations: “The Russian government, which has long sought to expel the United States from the continent, is overjoyed.”

    — David Frum, in The Atlantic, on the same subject. His Twitter feed is also worth reading, including: “Since 1945, the supreme strategic goal in Europe of the USSR and then Russia was the severing of the US-German alliance. Trump delivered.”

    — Josh Marshall, in Talking Points Memo, arguing that you should worry less about why Trump and Putin are in “a de facto alliance against ‘Europe’” and instead focus on the consequences: “The relevant issue is that they appear to be operating with common goals.”

    — And a tweetstorm by my newsroom colleague Max Fisher, which starts with: “When I met with German leaders in January, they were already preparing for the possibility of breakup with the US.”

Bottomline: the myopic narcissist-in-chief is being played for a fool by Putin. This really reflects well on the GOP, doesn’t it?

    1. Andrew and the two other shills are temporarily off line since the communications director at the White House resigned. No one available to upload their talking points.

    2. I've been saying for months that Trump is already being blackmailed by Putin. Nothing that has happened in those months contradicts this, and everything that comes to light supports it.

  2. There's a great post by Bob Seay this morning on Facebook announcing his support for Chase Kohne as the 2018 CD-4 candidate for the Dems.  Our librarians disgusting musings of Bob aside, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Bob for his grit and perseverance in the last cycle.  CD-4 encompasses a lot of geography; the challenges of living in one corner of the district (Lamar) and maintaining a presence in the other corner (Weld County) is daunting.  That, coupled with his day-job of education in Prowers County took the dedication of a citizen who understand the personal costs of being a public servant – and he still stepped to the plate.  Thanks again, Bob.

  3. Happy birthday to me.  I was born on memorial day, 1945.  Germany had surrendered but the war with Japan was raging and we had not yet dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

I gotta say, it has been one hell of a ride!

    1. Happy Birthday V!  1945 would put you right in the middle of my siblings (1934 – 1954)  So you are a virtual big brother 🙂

Yesterday would have been my parents 85th anniversary.

  4. There is a lot of chatter on the eastern plains over this article on Sedgwick and how marijuana is proving to be a salvation for the town trustees. Some are finally seeing the folly of Prohibition and the benefits of regulation.  Others, like our dear friend Moddy, would prefer to roll into town in their army surplus Hummers and shut that whole thing down.

Guess which camp will claim victory?

    1. My town council specifically decided not to put the issue to voters. * They knew which way the wind was blowing. They thought that they had to be the "moral leadership" in the community.

Now, everyone who has a license to use cannabis simply drives 15 miles down the road to the nearest dispensary and stocks up.

I think cannabis cultivation could be a win for this little community, but they would have to trust the wills of their voters. Seems like a bridge too far.

      * No linkie here – I don't really want the entire world to know where I livewink

I know which way my students, some of whom are 18 or close to it, would vote. They would overwhelmingly vote for cannabis sales and cultivation within the town's borders. They want job alternatives to the meat plant or the fast food places. They want to see long term economic growth. They'd like to be able to stay and make a life in their home town instead of having to relocate for a career.

    2. Our little moran won't like this, but Israel is leading the world in cannabis research and has focused on expanding their economy via marijuana exports.  I'll link here to a marijuana website so he'll have to pinch his sphincter a bit knowing the inter webs now knows he visited such a site.  (you can find the story on Forbes, too, but it isn't nearly as fun).   The entirety of the plant has a use, just as Mother Nature intended.  Here's another 'first' for Israel.  (this one's OK, Moddy – it's an Israeli-based website).
