Poll: The Best Legislator of 2009

  • by: Colorado Pols

As we promised a few days ago, this is a poll of who our readers think was the most effective state legislator of either political party in the 2009 legislative session. We’ve tried to identify all the nominees from our prior discussion thread (criteria was nominated and seconded by somebody); feel free to write-in in comments any we may have missed.

TOMORROW: The worst.

Who was the best legislator of the 2009 session?

  1. Not only is Sal Pace a great friend, he’s done some fantastic work in the legislature. Especially for a freshman, he’s made quite a mark under the dome. From water, to health care, to civil rights – VOTE PACE!

      1. There a law against saying nice things about good friends? Why do pollsters automatically jump to bj comparisons… I assure you, we’re JUST friends.

    1. Marostica gets my vote. He saved our bacon from the fire for the kids I work for.

And he proved that there are still some good republicans in Colorado, and that we as citizens can rise above partisanship to do the right thing.

I found this post about Marostica when he was running for office:

Kevan McNaught’s opponent, Don Maristoca, is quite simply a slimeball. The contrast between the candidates in this race could not be more distinct. McNaught is a solid conservative dedicated to limited government. Don Maristoca is pursuing the state House seat to profit his own private interests. We sincerely hope McNaught wins this race, because if Maristoca wins, he will use his position to hand himself and his cronies pork projects and government contracts.

guess his cronies are the citizens of Colorado.

        1. at trying to drive a wedge in the GOP, blue. don’t you all get tired of your transparent games?

don marostica is about as good a legislator as scott mcinnis is a law abiding candidate.

          1. … because ‘pubs will all hang on to every word posted by a guy called JeffcoBlue?

Even I don’t think ‘pubs are that dumb.

  2. I disagree with his vote against repealing the death penalty, but his leadership in bringing Marostica on board for SB-228 was terrific, along with his overall work on fiscal reform. He’s been a great leader in the Senate.

  3. I vote for Sen. Morgan Carroll. I personally know Senator Carroll and I remain in awe of her work ethic, knowledge of the issues, and legislative effectiveness.

This woman is the antithesis of the term “back bencher”.

    1. what exactly is the antithesis of a backbencher?  Hmmmmmmm, I think Westword’s Kenny B had the Senator’s number pretty good in last week’s issue.  Picture a Chorus Line….

  4. I appreciate that she stands up for some important things.  She needs to learn to stop talking past the sale.  Meaning, she talks so much, people vote against her.  Lastly, she needs to respect that she is a Democrat, and play nice with her caucus.  I voted for Morse because he was strategic and thoughtful and willing to take on big issues.  I would have also liked to support Marostica for the same reasons, but alas, with one vote, I think most effective has to go to someone in the majority.

    1. For me, the antitheisis of a backbencher is someone who earns their pay as a legislator by actually legislating, and there’s a lot of work involved in that.

As an independent, I actually like Sen. Carroll’s independent streak and her willingness to sometimes defy the party line. I can see where a Democrat might have a problem with that of course, but hey, aren’t Democrats always claiming to be the big tent party?

Sure she talks a lot, most politicians do. To me it demonstrates her passion for her cause. And I’ve always been a sucker for a passionate woman…..

  5. Have to say that the House leadership needs a kick in the pants.  Terrance Carroll and Paul Weissman were often so hands-off that when they did try to get their caucus to support them, it was often without success, because they hadn’t sufficiently worked their own caucus, helped the newbies and developed relationships.

    1. Terrance and Paul are both very effective.

They understand the tactical side of things and managed to get the big bills through (1273 excepted-and that would have made it through if the Governor hadn’t lobbied against it).

Just compare it to the Senate where bills seemed to pinball around as Groff was browsing Craigslist.
