“History teaches us that the American instinct has never been to seek isolation in opposite corners; it is to find strength in our common creed and forge unity from our great diversity.”

    1. Absolutely.  I love Thanksgiving, the only unruined Holiday.   Good strokes to everyone in our online community.   Christmas is just a festival of greed but this day is one to celebrate family and community.

    1. Thank God and Man for Bernie. Give me a Socialist over a Fascist and those who just want to give the Fascist a chance and listen to the will of the Electoral College.

When AC is happy you should know you've failed miserably.

  1. 'Splainin' request:

I got this from Megavote, which tracks Congressional votes and emails me about them. These are recent (Nov. 22) votes:

    Recent Senate Votes

Oil and Gas Royalties – Vote Rejected (51-47, 2 Not Voting)

The Senate voted on the McConnell motion to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to the bill that would establish revenue sharing for states involved in energy production from onshore and offshore areas leased by the government. It also would incorporate revenues generated by offshore wind energy production projects. Sixty votes were needed to invoke cloture and end debate.

    Sen. Michael Bennet voted NO
    Sen. Cory Gardner voted YES

Recent House Votes"Midnight" Rules – Vote Passed (240-179, 15 Not Voting)

The bill would permit a new Congress to use the procedures under the Congressional Review Act to disapprove, en bloc, multiple regulations issued by a president in his final year in office rather than just a single regulation at a time for rules issued during the final 60 session days of the previous Congress.

    Rep. Ed Perlmutter voted NO

Iranian Aircraft Purchases – Vote Passed (243-174, 17 Not Voting)

The measure, which combines two separately reported bills, would prohibit the Export-Import Bank from providing any export financing that would benefit the government of Iran or Iranian entities, and it would prohibit the Treasury Department from authorizing transactions by U.S. financial institutions to finance the export or re-export of commercial passenger aircraft to Iran. Under the measure, any prior Treasury authorizations for U.S. financing of commercial aircraft sales to Iran would be retroactively revoked.

    Rep. Ed Perlmutter voted NO

OK, so I think #1 , the Senate rejected McConnell's motion to close debate on a motion which would give states a vested interest in revenues from energy production.

#2, sounds very bad. It would allow a lazy Republican Senate to en masse reject every regulation Obama put in his last year in office – including work rules, DACA,  food safety, non-discrimination clauses in Fed employment, and ??

#3 – sounds like we won't be selling commercial passenger aircraft to the Iranian government anymore. Why not?

    1. Echoes of Bernie Sanders' jihad against eximbank because it helped Boeing.  The Boeing jobs Bernie voted against were Union jobs paying $37 an hour..   Bernie also raged against helping caterpiller export.

      1. Ex Im bank is complicated. It has pretty much degenerated now into a tug of war between Boeing and Delta airlines.  So if you're a congresscritter bought off by the Koch Bros Delta, then the Ex im bank is nothing but "crony capitalism".

If you're a Boeing booster, then the Ex Im bank "helps small businesses compete". Small businesses like GE, Boeing, Benxi, a giant Chinese iron and steel maker providing most of the steel for Trump buildings, and which has also cornered the market on rebar for the US construction industry, contributing to the marginalization of steelmakers in Pueblo, for example.

In the light of that investigation, it looks to me as though #3 on the Senate vote list above was a nice juicy turkey leg bone thrown to the Koch / Delta Airlines / anti Ex-Im forces who like to masquerade as "anti-crony capitalists".  Plus it's a twofer, as they get to look tough vs. Iran.

What Bernie tried to do was fix some of the giant loopholes in the ExIm bank structure which allowed abuses such as kickbacks and pay-for-play.  He got outmaneuvered, and ExIm was reauthorized with no "fixes".

I realize that this will make no dent in your anti-Sanders rants, and only give you fuel for more psuedo mind-reading and insult-flinging. You enjoy. Happy post-Thanksgiving, all.

        1. Oviously, the fact that Bernie hates big business is enough for you.  Those union jobs paying $37 are awful and must be replaced by $15 minimum wage jobs forthwith raking leaves or something.  Good luck building jetliners without big enterprises.  The fact is that bernie, like most ultra leftists, is an economic moron.  Hope you had a good holiday.

  2. Happy Turkey Day, Everybody. This motley bunch is something to be grateful for. Chocolate peppermint cake on my kitchen counter for dessert-it helps digestion, you know.devil

    1. There is some solid evidence; documented in a well researched article appearing in Bloomberg Business Week some months ago; that Trump or his representatives were routinely violating the Cuban embargo.

  3. This weekend has had some interesting splats.  Such as the rocks that the drumpf is tossing out as his advisors and cabinet.  A goodbye to the man who the Republicans spent billions trying to defeat by keeping good Americans from even seeing in person.  Yup.  Hellaofjob you fools.  He died on his own and you still pretending it was you from keeping the island from becoming the 52nd state, Puerto Rico and VI would be the 51st.

The great white wash of the drumpf continues.  He is so dirty that even the best of the media owners will not be able to keep him from facing treason.

  4. Bush ethics lawyer: Electoral College must reject Trump unless he sells his business

Another option, however unlikely, is for “Republicans in Congress [to] admit that they endorse Trump’s exploitation of public office for private gain and authorize his emoluments as the Constitution allows.”

Eisen’s conclusions are shared by Harvard Law Professor Larry Tribe, one of the nation’s preeminent constitutional scholars. Tribe told ThinkProgress that, after extensive research, he concluded that “Trump’s ongoing business dealings around the world would make him the recipient of constitutionally prohibited ‘Emoluments’ from ‘any King, Prince, or foreign State’ — in the original sense of payments and not necessarily presents or gifts — from the very moment he takes the oath.”

    1. Makers versus Takers, buddy!

I wonder how much of the urban economic boom is due to more high-tech jobs and service jobs in urban centers. A cursory peek at the BLS stats shows strong growth in health-related services and software development jobs.  Also marketing and construction. Perhaps it’s mostly that there are simply more people, hence more jobs and more money, in cities than in small towns.

At my recent family thanksgiving gathering, all of my nieces and nephews, plus my own adult progeny, were involved in health care or marketing. My son’s an engineer that makes stuff, but he’s an outlier.

Fortune magazine (that commie rag), predicts oil prices will continue to be low, coal isn't coming back, solar is booming, lithium battery technology is promising, there is some tentative good news on nuclear with less waste.

Trump is, above all, a businessman. He hasn't shown any fondness for the Koch's fossil-fueled agenda.  Perhaps he will find ways to support renewables – just not near his golf course.  Maybe capitalist self-interest will save the planet.

I don't know how the urban jobs boom can migrate to rural areas without support for the health industries (don't repeal the ACA!), and find ways to transition folks from fossil-fueled jobs to renewable jobs. I have great faith in the power of self-interest – if people can see the benefit to their communities in supporting renewables and health care, they'll do it. Otherwise, they'll continue to support con artists like Trump that persuade them to vote against their own self interests.

  5. MJ: none of the above really matters. Jim Bakker says that God will send earthquakes to punish counties that voted for Hillary Clinton (quote courtesy of Right Wing Watch dot org).

    1. God has terrible aim, then. Weld county and most of Oklahoma voted for Trump, but they're being punished with earthquakes.  Does God frack?

      From USGS

      4.3 magnitude: Enid, OK 11/25/16

907 3.0 magnitude earthquakes in Ok in 2015 alone. It's due to injecting wastewater from fracking, of course. But OK's response is precious as a study in equivocation:

We know that Oklahoma experienced 907 magnitude 3+ earthquakes in 2015, 585 magnitude 3+ earthquakes in 2014 and 109 in 2013.

While we understand that Oklahoma has historically experienced some level of seismicity, we know that the recent rise in earthquakes cannot be entirely attributed to natural causes. Seismologists have documented the relationship between wastewater disposal and triggered seismic activity. The Oklahoma Geological Survey has determined that the majority of recent earthquakes in central and north-central Oklahoma are very likely triggered by the injection of produced water in disposal wells.

Oklahoma’s response to the recent rise in earthquakes is constantly evolving based on the growing body of knowledge dedicated to exploring the issue.  The resources on this page inform our understanding of Oklahoma’s earthquakes and provide the foundation for our regulatory response.

      In Colorado:

      Summit County frackquakes tracking page.

5/31 Weld County quakes stop when wastewater injection well plugged.

11/9 Kersey area quake epicenter is PDC well site.
