The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is taking fire this afternoon after an extremely ill-advised Twitter attack on Rep. Tammy Duckworth, candidate for the U.S. Senate in Illinois running against Sen. Mark Kirk:

For those of you who don’t know, Politico reports, accusing Tammy Duckworth of “not standing up for our veterans” is…well, it’s more than a little problematic.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee tweeted Tuesday that Illinois Senate Democratic candidate Tammy Duckworth, who lost both her legs while serving in the Iraq War, [Pols emphasis] “has a sad record of not standing up for our veterans.”
Even in this era of prefabricated vitriol, such an attack on a combat veteran’s disabling service injury is several degrees beyond outrageous–made only slightly less so by the likely fact that it wasn’t expressly intentional. We feel pretty confident that if the parties were reversed, we’d be hearing about this deleted Tweet for the next several weeks from every conservative pundit and “fair and balanced” media outlet in the country.
Assuming this is just a gaffe, it’s one of the worst ever.
