"Just when we most need to be clearheaded, in order to face the hard facts before us, there is all too frequently a very real inclination to give way to dangerous tendencies merely as an escape from realities."

  1. $400,000.  According to N.Y. Times, that's the price a federal magistrate judge placed on Idaho's bigoted ban on same sex marriage when she ordered the state to reimburse the plaintiffs that sum in attorney's fees.

One wonders what Attorney General Suthers' exercise in futility will end up costing the taxpayers of Colorado when the bills in those cases are finally tallied up.

I remember how much the taxpayers had to shell out for the plaintiffs' attorney's fees in Romer v. Evans.  I always thought Gale Norton should have demanded reimbursement from Will Perkins and Coloradoans for Family Values.

    1. Suthers did about the minimum expected of him in arguing to uphold Colorado's ban. I won't fault him for it. I've become a bit of a savant on this issue, as I'm writing a book that touches on it. Contrast Suther's perfunctory challenge to Florida's A.G. Pam Bondi, the thrice married, twice divorced Madame Bondi who argued for the "sanctity of marriage" all the way to SCOTUS. They told her to go away and marriage equality become Florida law on January 5th. Now, that's going to be some legal bill. BTW the Sixth Circuit, which upheld the marriage bans in its jurisdiction will be a subject for discussion at the January 9th conference http://www.scotusblog.com/2014/12/same-sex-marriage-cases-ready-scheduled/

    2. Gessler still holds the record for wasting business and nonprofit registration fee dollars – around a million litigating against 1303, hunting down nonexistent noncitizen voters, spending less on verifying petition signatures, etc.

No previous Secretary of State has spent as much of his/her department's budget litigating silly issues, nor has any previous S o S deliberately created a department budget crisis by providing fee holidays to businesses two years in a row.

For those of you who still dream of a Gessler candidacy for ____ office, remember that this is one of the most fiscally irresponsible administrators in history, and that record will haunt him far longer than his naked partisanship.

      1. And let's not forget his initial desire both to moonlight and to help raise money for R campaign violation fines. Hands down worst most partisan SOS ever. May his days in political office be over for good. Meanwhile, back at the Vatican we have the best Pope ever, and I mean ever, from the beginning of Popes. So that's  a nice Christmas present to the world this year. May his time with us be long and healthy.

        1. Agreed:  Best.  Pope.  Ever. (ut multiplicati gustus testers)

          Pope Blasts Vatican Bureaucrats

Pope Francis blasted the Vatican's top bureaucrats at an annual Christmas gathering, accusing the cardinals, bishops and priests who make up the Curia of "spiritual Alzheimer's" and of lusting for power at all costs.

  2. Here's hoping our Dear, Esteemed Senator Michael Bennet has a nice Citibank Christmas with his beautiful young family, and that he realizes halfway thru how corrupt it is.

  3. I'm not being a purist, just have a sentimental spot for Democrats who aren't afraid to act like Democrats and who aren't afraid of being hated by their Republican friends across the aisle. Like FDR, they should welcome that hate as a sign they are fighting for the Middle Class.

FDR. Truman. Warren. She will never vote for Citibank and justify it as "voting her district". Here's Liz calling out Wall Street, something I could never see being done by our Dear Senator Mike.

  4. Read an interesting piece at Salon today suggesting progressives should focus on building a progressive movement independent of the Democratic party.

It's funny, I registered as a Democrat the day I turned 18 (mom took me to register on my birthday– dorky, I know).  I thought it was the right party for me, although I still had a lot to learn.  Stayed pretty happy for a long while.  Then I went back to school and became, well, a neo-marxist and a democratic socialist.  Stayed with the party, thinking that was the right way to try and influence a party that I now disagreed with but still had a lot in common with.  Can't do that anymore.

It took 30 years, but the Dems managed to convince me to disaffiliate.

  5. Another day, another Republican officeholder pleads guilty to a felony.  This time, in New York, where Staten Island GOP Congressman Michael "I'll Throw You Off This Balcony" Grimms pleaded guilty to tax fraud.  He faces 24 to 30 months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines but his attorneys are expected to argue for no incarceration.

  6. Looks like a considerable number of people approve of all that over reaching.  Can't remember the last time Obama's average was much above 42 and rarely quite reached that this past fall.  Even then he needed Razzie's outlier higher numbers to get there. He was generally below that with Gallup so this is a significant change. Wait for Modster's usual non-response, look over there or pointless "joke" response and an irrelevant rightie media cartoon from AC. Come on guys. Don't disappoint me by posting a relevant original thought!  After all, it's the holiday season.

Just under 47 percent of Americans approve of the job President Obama is doing, according to a new Gallup poll. The bump comes amid a number of positive developments during his second term in office.
