Coincidentally we've been having major internet/computer snafus. Finally gave up on do it ourselfing and called our favorite computer fix it guy. Guess I mostly missed a lot of aggravation?
And I was so sure no enemy would ever bomb this place and end the confusion.
Switch to Azure or AWS.
NetSol isn't exactly small potatoes; they're still the backbone of the US DNS registry, and they have a significant business in providing web hosting. DDoS attacks have proven in the past year that they can degrade the entire Internet for stretches of time.
And to cure people of any illusions they might have, Azure and AWS don't really mitigate the problem of DDoS attacks; if your cloud server is attacked, it goes down just as readily as any other server, and if the data center containing your cloud server is attacked, your service suffers just like it would in any other data center. AWS and Azure don't provide you service that magically operates your code on a seemingly infinite number of servers around the world; they merely make it easy to migrate, replicate, cluster, scale, etc.
All true. But Amazon and Microsoft tend to do much better handling it.
Meh. Not saying AWS and Azure don't do okay, but if a company like NetSol that runs one of the central components of the Internet can't deal with a DDoS, chances are neither could the cloud services. The Guvs aren't dealing with small fry here – they're all in the same playing space when it comes to that kind of stuff.
(PS – Yes, I'm pushing back on this for a reason. I dislike recommendations to buy services when the root cause of a problem isn't addressed by the recommendation. Cloud computing is trendy, but it isn't the generic solution to everything, and its only benefit to CP in this instance would have been "it wasn't us, this time".)
I've never been terribly impressed by NetSol's technical expertise. They're competent but they're more a monopoly than a competitive strive to be the best company. Everything is built around leverging their position running the core DNS.
I think Azure is the best out there because Microsoft is putting in a gigantic effort to gain share in cloud services by providing the best service. Meanwhile Amazon is somewhat taking their market share for granted and not trying as hard.
In the last ten days, many people I know are having all kinds of computer problems…it is like going back to the "olden days" of 2004. Solar storms?
All those lighting strikes? Snowden? David T, do you have any answers, guesses?
I just tried to get on my aol account and got the message that access was "forbidden." That is a scary word to read. I tried again and everything was fine.
I have no idea what is going on, which, of course, is pretty standard for me.
There's a million things that can cause short disruptions in various places. Reboot, get a cup of coffee, and then try again 🙂
Thanks, DT.
I have a MAC, and all I had to do was just try aol again and everything was find. However, I have friends whose computers have lost the internet or had other major problems in the last ten days. Are their dots to be connected?
Could there be an underlying cause?
(BTW. I like your advice…it can be applied to many situations..".Reboot, get a cup of coffee, and then try again"….I can see that on T-Shirts and coffee mugs!!
My work computers were really bug-gy on Tuesday, yesterday, not so much. I think our cloud is managed by Microsoft, but what do I know?
Guess I picked a good couple of days to be absent from any electronics other than flashlights on Monday and Tuesday
When they start hack attacking flashlights, we know we're all in serious trouble.
Obviously, all of these problems stem from the single undeniable fact that Obama has left our country's borders so porous …
We will never be secure in this country from all these perils unless, and until, we adequately secure our borders …
[hat tip to the "party of ideas" …]
I'm not even going to pretend I can follow the PR/ DT discussion with more than vague glimmers of understanding. All I know is everything, not just this site, was really screwed up for us and then our wonderful computer guy who we seem to need about once every two or three years came and made everything better for a ridiculously modest fee.
During the time when navigating was so difficult I thought about recent comments about declining comment numbers as well as the loss of so many participants here and I think it's a combination of being an off year election-wise with no really exciting Colorado match ups in the races for Senate and Governor on the horizon, annoyance with changes and difficulties on the site and a bad case of the same old/same olds.
Info on new entries into various races and on developing state and county issues is about the only thing that's interesting right now. As for everything else, whether it's the anti-choice attacks on women's health and autonomy, reasonable gun regulations, voter suppression, healthcare, whatever, we've all, righties, moderates and liberals, said pretty much everything there is to say many times over and none of it seems to change anybody's mind.
Maybe we're just getting a little tired of repeating ourselves. Things should pick up in 2014 when the real election season gets under way. Still glad to have the option of participating without too much trouble again.
