Gail Schoettler Endorses Carol Boigon

  • by: Colorado Pols

We can’t say the timing is any surprise, coming at the same time James Mejia scored a pretty major endorsement from former Mayor Frederico Peña, but Carol Boigon yesterday announced a decent endorsement from former Lt. Gov. Gail Schoettler:

There are many strong women who have dedicated their lives to public service. One of the best of those is now running for Mayor of Denver-Carol Boigon.  I remember so well when I ran for Governor of Colorado and lost by only a few thousand votes.  I want this remarkable woman, Carol Boigon, to win the Mayor’s office by more than a few thousand votes!

It’s a good endorsement for Boigon, though we’d be surprised if Schoettler endorsed anyone else. That said, it’s kind of an odd plea from the former Gubernatorial candidate.

What Boigon had Schoettler say in this endorsement was essentially “I was almost Governor. Please don’t let Carol be almost Mayor.”

Don’t get us wrong, it’s a very good get for Boigon. But that campaign’s use of the endorsement comes off more as a plea than it does as a celebration of Boigon’s accomplishments. It also comes off stressing the fact that Boigon would indeed be the first woman mayor, an angle we’re not sure will carry the councilwoman all the way to city hall. It’s kind of like if Chris Romer sent out an endorsement from his father saying “This guy is also a Romer who has dedicated his life to public service. I want this remarkable Romer, Chris Romer, to win the Mayor’s office.”

It’ll be interesting to see how this endorsement affects the race, if it does at all. It certainly doesn’t have the same proximity in its weight as a Peña endorsement.

  1. AND THEN in the time it took me to post on the other thread you get the Schoettler endorsment up to top your page!!

Again, admit it!! You guys are all Boigon.

    DenPols For Boigon!!

You hold back posting the Pena endorsement for more than a day, and then the Schoettler endorsement is up within an hour of it occuring!!  Seriously, give your readers some credit.

Nice woman, but talk about a bad politican.  She had the Governor’s office handed to her on a platter in ’98 and still managed to figure out how to lose it.

For Carol’s sake I really hope she isn’t advising the campaign.

    1. We got the e-mail about Schoettler mid-day yesterday and we didn’t see that Mejia’s campaign posted a diary. When we saw it, we promoted it.

If anything, you should be critical of the fact that we’re a day behind the press releases we get.

I’m not sure if you saw our Diary on Boigon’s first campaign video, but we thought it was terrible. Boigon is running a smart campaign just like several others on the trail, and so we write about Boigon. That said, there’s absolutely no  preference here for any of the mayoral candidates.
