Alex Sanchez announced Sunday (4/19/09)that he will run for Jennifer Veiga’s open seat in Senate District 31.
His announcement states:
“If given the opportunity to serve, I will defend and promote our democratic values of social justice and equality in the State Senate. And, I will not compromise at the expense of the poor, the underprivileged, our kids or working families.”
Alex Sanches is not an elected official. the ONLY elected official that is in the race is Jill Conrad,who is a DPS board member representing all of Denver. Alex works for her.
I am a resident of the district (but not a voter on the vacancy committee). I hope Pat gets the appointment.
He is extremely knowledgable in the legislative process and his views on election law is very similar to mine. He also grasps the difficulties that poorly cut districts have caused in Denver since the last redistricting.
I have known him almost as long as I have lived in Colorado and his ability to pay attention to detail is legislation is truly amazing. After all, the Devil is always in the details!
Does the party not have better people that a Lobbyist that will be a sure vote for his clients. His clients must be happy.
I think he represents the ACLU.
If the ACLU is happy, then I am happy–after all I am a “card carrying” member.
Not all lobbyists are created equal.
It’s true that I am currently a partner in a lobbying firm and do indeed represent the ACLU of Colorado and several other progressive nonprofit organizations. As nonprofits, these groups do not endorse candidates or get involved in electoral politics, so please don’t infer any endorsement. I’m really proud of the work I’ve done at the Capitol for the past 15 years, and if elected, I would continue to work on some of those same issues because I’m passionate about them and they matter to Democrats in SD 31. But I’m running for this seat because I feel I have more to contribute as a senator than I can in my current role, and I’d like to work on a broader array of policy issues. What does that mean for your clients?
Many of your clients are causes I support and I hate to see your firm’s capacity cut by 1/3.
Pat represents pro-choice and pro-equality causes. I don’t know if this replacted by his clientele or not, but he is also an advocate for affordable healthcare.
I believe in tried and true, and Jill Conrad has more than proven herself on the DPS school board. Sure she has an wealth of education knowledge, but its on a policy level and she has a very firm grasp on how it fits into the rest of what Colorado needs. She keeps very close track on all of the legislature, and I think would be another hit-the-ground-running senator. (Don’t know much about Pat but I think Alex is too green for a senate seat.) Part of why she won the very contested school board election is because of her big picture abilities. She weighs all sides of an issue carefully, and is a good facilitator, collaborator, and mediator when things get sticky. Finally, her knowlege of her constituency also ensures she will always represent them first.
