  1. AP Coverage:  Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz: former House speaker and husband killed in politically motivated shooting

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz: former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and husband were killed Saturday in a politically motivated shooting.

A second legislator was wounded on Saturday in attacks.

Both were, as no doubt most of us would guess, in the MN Democratic Party.

Melissa Hortman … a member of the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL). She has served in the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2005 and was the Speaker of the House from 2019 to 2025.

Hoffman, a Democrat, was first elected in 2012. He runs Hoffman Strategic Advisors, a consulting firm. He previously served as vice chair of the Anoka Hennepin School Board, which manages the largest school district in Minnesota.

      1. Weekend news of injuries and other scary stuff.

        • Minnesota No Kings! demonstrations officially cancelled after assassinations and assaults
        • in Northern Virginia, …a man intentionally drove an SUV through a crowd of departing protesters, striking at least one person,
        • in Riverside (CA), a woman was badly injured when a car sped around a march, then struck her and fled the scene.
        • One person was shot at a ‘No Kings’ protest in Salt Lake City on Saturday, and later died from injuries. Three people are in custody, police said.
        • Austin, TX:  “In the leadup to the “No Kings” protest, a “credible threat” targeted at state lawmakers attending the protest led to a brief evacuation of the Capitol complex and the arrest of one man near La Grange.”
        • Brandon Martin, who said he was assigned as a liaison to the police for the Pueblo rally, told The Post a woman with a gun was among the people arrested….Martin said a woman wearing a Make America Great Again hat with a gun visible in a holster was acting agitated at the El Pueblo Museum, which was the endpoint of a march at the rally…. She started to pull it out, he said.
“As soon as she grabbed it, I took her to the ground,” Martin said.
  2. Homeland Security may hereby take a break from deporting vegetable pickers and instead take closer looks at networks or individuals that encourage or are preparing for acts of violence within the country.

  3. Dems have very low support in Quinnipac Pol. H/T Rachel Bitecofer.

    Why indeed?

Just 21% of Democrats approve of the job congressional Democrats are doing.

I want to make the reason CYRTSAL CLEAR

Democrats want the party to meet the moment. They want you to treat the emergency we are in as an emergency.

Until and unless Democrats follow Gavin Newsom’s lead on taking the fight right at Trump, don’t expect the party’s base to come home.

    1. I have no doubt that the "No Faux Kings Day" protests will convince Trump of anything.

It might however, convince the Dems to "stand up and do what has to be done". It's a public relations campaign.

    2. I think that's half of it. I also think most people don't like what the Democratic party is selling. Policies created by 20 and 30 something staff who are totally bought in on all the policies the groups want are not offering something compelling to most of the country.

    3. It's actually 41% of Democrats (41-53%) approving of Dems in Congress – still not great – but it was 21% of all voters surveyed who approved of Dems in Congress. Republicans in Congress lost 8% since a mid-February Q poll (32% approve now, 40% in mid-February). Trump was at 38% approval, down 3 since April, Big Bonkers Bill only got 27% (27-53%). To me, it looks like some of the numbers are scattered, not really consistent – if the Big Bill's at 27%, why 32% approval for the Rs who passed it, 38% for Trump who wants it, and far less for the Ds who opposed (who don't have the votes to accomplish anything anyway)?

As y'all might guess, I'm not going to join in the Dem Doom at this point, especially over one poll. What matters is getting 218 seats or more in 2026, and these are 1-on-1 contests with actual individuals running.

    4. Too many old, corporate loving, Democrats are still calling the shots. People my age should be backing off and we desperately need to get our populist MOJO back…local Mugwumps opinions, notwithstanding.

  4. We went to the Layfette No Kings protest. It was super cool and very emotional.

Interesting though. There were ~ 1,000 people there and of them maybe 5 were non-white. And Layfette has a significant Latino population. I worry if the protests against Trump are just highly educated well-off white people. That's not sufficient.

        1. David

Parse the words and numbers all you like. It doesn't mean a thing to those people who are being targeted. Until you are similarly targeted, you really can't relate..

      1. Agree, Harry. It has to be difficult for ANYONE with less-than-white skin to be out in public particularly at a high-profile event. We are being governed by white supremacists, and we need not forget that.

    1. Denver’s No Kings had enough people to spill out of the Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park — up the hill of the State Capitol, under the trees of Civic Center Park, across 14th to the shadow of the Court of Appeals, and on the lawn of the Central Library.

I got there around 1:00 pm, part of a steady stream of people walking in.  And there were already a few flowing out.  While I was there, the inflow continued, and the outflow probably increased. As I was leaving and going south, there were already people gathering on each block of Broadway with signs, as far south as I went (to Alameda).

Heritage appearance (to my eyes): Lots of Whites, some Latinos, a few Asians, and I didn’t see more than a handful of Blacks. Over-represented population of people dressed in or with slogans linking to PRIDE. Was also interested to see those wearing something relating to their military service — I’d guess maybe 5%.

    2. The makeup of the crowd is unsurprising as, according to the 2020 census, Boulder County is 76.2% white, and the city is 76.4% white.

  5.  The elders at my apartment complex shared a little wisdom on Alameda Avenue for No Kings Day.

Just a few of us in the hot sun in walkers, sitting, or standing up fot truth, justice, and the American way.

Planned cuts to Medicaid and Medicare will literally hit us where we live.

$Rump has created an opposition coalition of cranky old people, immigrants, and children of immigrants and defenders of democracy.

  6. Maybe it is time to have a “No Oligarchs” day. The simplest solution to our budget problem would be to cancel their multi-trillion dollar tax cuts, but since the Trump Administration ( particularly his cabinet ) is replete with Billionaires and Billiowannabees, it will be the toughest nut to crack.

Election reform, vis a vis the money pollution problem, is critical. The lies really matter, my friends. Even a couple of my family members are starting to rethink their blind obeisance to the MAGA mantra.

The Orange Horde is expecting delivery on the lies they were told. We must ratchet up our efforts at truth-telling…the truth needs to matter like it used to

    1. That's the hard part – getting truth to matter again. As long as the lies serve purposes important to the orange horde, fantasy world will persist.

  7. Eleven million attended "No Kings" protests in cities and towns in  every state.Hereis one crowdsourced

    protest tracker.

They were peaceful, except for severalwhere  Magats tried to become infamous  by becoming a mass shooter. These Trump-inspired pawns were stopped by vigilant protest security teams, and by police on site. One was in Pueblo, Colorado. Another : Salt Lake City. Tragically, Ah Loo ,a young Samoan fashion designer who was just watching, was shot and killed by one of these nuts.

Nobody in Magaland is even acknowledging these violent incidents. Mainstream media is not aggregating reports, though there is a clear pattern of attempting to intimidate and chill dissent.

    1. Add

      • "In Culpeper, Virginia, a 21-year-old man, Joseph R. Checklick Jr., was arrested after allegedly driving his SUV into a dispersing crowd in a parking lot, striking at least one person."
      • "A woman was seriously injured when a dark SUV drove through a crowd of protesters during a 'No Kings' Day demonstration in Riverside, California,"
    2. A conservative community in south-central Colorado (in other words, no Democrats are elected to partisan office in this county) had a protest of more than 400 people, of all ages. I was there for the full two hours and saw no inappropriate behavior from any protester. I did see dangerous (and illegal) behavior from pro-Trumpers. I understand a "coal roller" got pulled over by police (the local police department is hugely helpful in keeping the peace at the protests), and some number of cars driven (too fast) by pro-Trumpers right next to the curbs and sidewalks put protesters in danger (who were on the sidewalks or farther back from the streets). One pro-Trumper carried a sign with Trump and Jesus on it and walked in the street along the curb, putting himself in danger from traffic.

It's important for resisters to see they are not alone. Seeing the size of protests growing helps others get out there the next time.
