“If history repeats itself, and the unexpected always happens, how incapable must Man be of learning from experience.”

I just picked this up from Alternet via NPR. And they say Dems are the Nanny State advocates:https://www.npr.org/2025/05/09/nx-s1-5389952/usda-snap-doge-data-immigration
And tragic news from Georgia; MTG isn’t going to challenge John Ossoff for Senate. It’s tragic because she would have gotten clobbered and the House would have been rid of her.
I wonder just how many billions of Americans will actually be seeing any kind of benefit from this week’s British tariff agreement? (I mean besides our large and important population of UK golf club owners?)
At the Cratchit home, 5-year-old Tim: “Oh joy, 5, no 6, pencils from Santa!!! How did he ever know?!?! God bless us all, every one!”
Meanwhile, somewhere in the midwest US, 9-year-old Ralphie [opening a large, carefully wrapped box]: “5 pencils — [reading aloud] . . . ‘A Very Merry Christmas from Everyone at GEICO’. . .??? — C’mon really?!?! WTF mom!?!? That’s it!?!?! (Dad blew another whole paycheck on that $Melania memecoin drawing again, huh???) Fuck!!” [Runs out of the living room crying] “I hate this whole stupid family!!!”
As several people pointed out, this is more of a concept of a deal than one that will actually have bottom-line revenue consequences.
AP News on May 8: WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration announced a trade deal with the United Kingdom Thursday in grandiose terms, but with only limited details about what it will achieve.
BBC's take: "Both the US and UK have so far offered limited details about the new trade deal, which both say is still being worked out in the weeks ahead.
But anyone hoping the White House will either significantly roll back its tariffs – or win major concessions abroad – seem bound for disappointment."
DW, Germany’s international broadcaster: "However, the pact, signed at the White House on Thursday, is not the "major trade deal" that Trump touted on social media. A full trade deal takes months or years to negotiate and must be ratified by Congress, which would further extend the timeline. The bilateral agreement is the outline of a limited trade deal that will still need extensive negotiations to finalize."
And now, news of a US – China trade deal … The Guardian says "White House claims China trade deal reached while Beijing hails ‘important first steps’" "At a news conference later on Sunday, He, the top Chinese trade official, called the talks “candid” and said substantive progress had been made to reach an “important consensus”, according to China’s state-run media. The two sides will issue a joint statement agreed [to] during the talks on Monday, the vice-premier said."
