As Mediaite’s Alex Griffing reports this morning, Colorado’s controversy first details later Rep. Lauren Boebert piled on to one of the anecdotes floated by the world’s richest man Elon Musk to justify his evisceration of the U.S. Agency for International Development, the first (but not last) federal agency to find its head in the DOGE guillotine:
Boebert shared a Politico report on the many false allegations Elon Musk has spread against USAID and captioned the image by writing, “LOL. @politico is trying to attack @elonmusk because he’s exposing their grift. NEWS FLASH: No one trusts media funded by the deep state!!”
Musk and others had claimed earlier in the day that Politico was receiving millions of dollars in funding from USAID, based on spending reports that Musk’s DOGE had apparently seized from the humanitarian aid organization. Musk has unilaterally moved to shutter the agency, which was created and funded through federal law…
As you’ve probably guessed due to the fact that we’re writing about it, there’s a small problem:
Community Notes was quick to add context to Boebert’s tweet and noted that her Congressional office also pays for the news service, which she claimed “no one trusts.” “Members of Congress and administration officials pay for Politico Pro, a service that provides policy updates. Lauren Boebert also pays for this service in her office,” read the community note affixed by X to Boebert’s tweet.
Reason’s Billy Binion went through Boebert’s expense report and found the line item with the exact amount, he reported, “Here it is. Lauren Boebert’s office paid Politico LLC $7,150 for a yearlong subscription starting on Jan 27 last year. This is just a remarkably stupid news cycle.”
The only benefit of the doubt we can offer is the likelihood that Boebert does not herself read POLITICO Pro, and the subscription her office paid thousands of dollars for is for the benefit of Boebert’s staff. But if the subscription is useful enough for Boebert’s office to pay the tall fee, USAID can probably make the same case.
Lauren Boebert took on the “media funded by the deep state,” only to discover that she is the deep state too.
