Monday Open Thread

  • by: Colorado Pols

Our developers have been working all weekend to implement a long list of improvements to the new design which you’ll see deployed in the coming days. Please keep those complaints coming and watch for fixes.

This is one of those rare opportunities in life where you are being explicitly encouraged to keep complaining. Don’t miss this opportunity.

  1. Tried to search for something on Colorado Pols this morning. Clicked the magnifying glass in the blue “Home” bar, and the search box showed up …. barely seen at the top of the page, mostly behind the black “W” bar at the top of the page.
MUCH more functional approach on the magnifying glass on the black bar itself — a simple “slide” opening in the black bar.

  2. Thanks for the “Click to Edit” option reappearing.

Today’s absence is the “formatting” bar I used yesterday to BOLD my responses to David.

here’s a test to see if this is picking up html codes from what I type
Here’s an edit: Yeah!!! it worked, picking up bracket b and bracket strong.

  3. It was nice in old ColoradoPolsLand to be able to link to another Thread directly from within a Thread (in a Thread list on the right side). I presume that’s already on the list.

        1. Got that working – but what my post is referring to is the ability to link directly from inside a thread such as this Monday Open Thread, to a different thread such as the Tuesday Open Thread. In the old configuration you could do that – the threads would be listed on the right sidebar.

  4. Yesterday in my comments I flipped to [Source] and typed in

    1. First…

and then out of source mode and typed away getting a numbered list. Looked great. And then when I saved – all that went away.
Now in this comment – no formatting at all. There isn’t even a box around the edit area.

  5. Everyone – be understanding that this site is going to be problematic for a week or so. With a new (and this change is so large, it’s essentially new) application is you have to go live to find some of the problems. And fixing them can then surface other problems. So this will take a bit of time.

Pols – it is good of you to encourage people to complain. Because otherwise the participants here are so polite and gentle, they would not say anything harsh or negative 🙂

  6. Trump crossed the line once again with his Veterans Day speech, calling vermin, as the Nazis did.
We pledge to you that we will root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country, that lie and steal and cheat on elections”

As usual, dumbass Trump lumps his fascist self and minions with the opposite communists and Marxists. He has no damned idea what any of those terms really mean, but they all sound nasty so he likes the effect of the sound bite.

Hope he roots out the fascists, and try not to let the door hit your fat ass as you exit the room of Democracy

    1. Finally, reporters are saying the quiet part out loud — Trump is nothing more than a wannabe tin pot dictator filled with rage and bent on vengeance.  He's "In Love" with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, and is envious of Putin.  Here is an excerpt from coverage of his speech in the Washington Post:

“The language is the language that dictators use to instill fear,” said Timothy Naftali, a senior research scholar at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. “When you dehumanize an opponent, you strip them of their constitutional rights to participate securely in a democracy because you’re saying they’re not human. That’s what dictators do.”

Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a historian at New York University, said in an email to The Washington Post that “calling people 'vermin’ was used effectively by Hitler and Mussolini to dehumanize people and encourage their followers to engage in violence.”

“Trump is also using projection: note that he mentions all kinds of authoritarians ‘communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left’ to set himself up as the deliverer of freedom,” Ben-Ghiat said. “Mussolini promised freedom to his people too and then declared dictatorship.”

  7. The border denoting the “Leave a Comment” box is missing. Hopefully, I won’t fall off the cliff typing my usual run-on sentences 😉

I also see we’re tracking the time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, England now!

I’ll check to see if I can edit this comment after posting.

  8. AP’s Jill Colvin reports, without commentary, on Trump’s Poppycock and Conspiracies campaign promises. It would be nice if they offered a piece evaluating the BS and Baloney promises (not punditry, but actual expert review on feasibility and likely impact or outcomes).

Like his promise in 2015 that “Only I can fix it!” or “I’ll pay off the national debt in 8 years”, he’s making similarly absurd (even for a megalomaniac) promises:

    • Foreign policy: Trump claims that even before he is inaugurated, he will have settled the war between Russia and Ukraine. That includes, he says, ending the “endless flow of American treasure to Ukraine” and asking European allies to reimburse the U.S. for the cost of rebuilding stockpiles.

It is unclear whether he would insist that Russia withdraw from territory in Ukraine it seized in the war that it launched in February 2022.

Oh, and the tool bar is also missing along with the “edit” function. So I provide the link in raw format instead of embedding it in the commentary.

  9. I’m logged in and it took me a bit to realize both my comment box was absent, and the formatting bar non-existent, but that I post. You polsters may enjoy this 21 minute interview in Wray with Director George Nolfi (I can’t embed so link is included). Full disclosure: George and myself are two of the four founders of “Civil”; George and I also work together as Director/Exec Producer of the movie “Elevation” that was shot in Colorado and will release this coming Spring.

    1. Replying to Michael regarding the Civil conversation: I had multiple reactions –

Would have liked to be a part of the conversation and challenge a few things (in a totally kind and thoughtful way, of course)

Would have liked to raise issues about freedom and liberty, so long believed to be part of the GOP mantra but in fact today’s GOP is all about taking away some freedoms (such as a woman’s right to self-determination)

Would have like to ask the question, then what do we do about the growing number of gun deaths of innocent adults and children in this country?

I trust there are or will be Civil conversations with more of a mix around the table. Those are the more difficult conversations to have. Serving in nonpartisan elective office, such as on a Town or City Council or on a School Board (at least where the elective bodies are not completely dominated by one end of the political spectrum), provides opportunity for focus on interests and needs instead of what someone’s political party (or TV channel of choice) tells them to believe.

      1. Thx for the feedback, Realist. The actual interview was scheduled to be an hour that turned in to two hours. Most of these men have known each other for decades and surprisingly, they weren’t as monolithic as they all believed about each other. Maybe we can set up something in your area at some point. We’ve just finished some work in Mississippi and working on some east coast engagements. The bulk of these conversations are two people from opposite sides of the fence (for instance, our first was my dad and a young progressive from Los Angeles https://www.civilfilms.co/p/civil-conversation-1-jack-and-tyler )

    1. ”All I have to do, I tell myself, is keep your mouth shut and look stupid. It shouldn’t be that hard.“

      ~Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale

          1. Is it Paul Gosar whose siblings have publicly denounced him and his crackpot beliefs?

Maybe these folk need to form some kind of support group to help one another cope with the shame and humiliation of having relatives who belong to that cult.

        1. laugh

After all, there's nothing in the Constitution preventing the "fucking short-bus people" – another QAnon Shaman lawyer quote – from serving in Congress.

  10. Maryanne Trump Barry found dead at 86.  Even she couldn't escape the clutches of FDFQ. Thanks again to Mary Trump for her contribution of sharing Maryanne's true feelings about her little brother.

“All he wants to do is appeal to his base,” Barry said in a conversation secretly recorded by her niece, Mary L. Trump. “He has no principles. None. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this.”

Barry, 83, was aghast at how her 74-year-old brother operated as president. “His goddamned tweet and lying, oh my God,” she said. “I’m talking too freely, but you know. The change of stories. The lack of preparation. The lying. Holy shit.”

    1. Alva – I used the block quote icon, and even went into "Source" to see if it had embedded the blockquotes.  It showed the block code but when I posted it didn't manifest.

    2. It would be nice if Mary was designated to deliver the eulogy.

Is there a hole at the Bedminster Golf Course with Maryanne's name on it?

    3. I suspect her resignation from the Third Circuit was tied up in the Trump family BS.  As far as I could tell, she was a competent federal judge who attempted to do her job.  Her brother, not so much.

      1. She got caught up in the Trump web.  Everything FDFQ touches, dies.

Retiring as a Judge, Trump’s Sister Ends Court Inquiry Into Her Role in Tax Dodges

President Trump’s older sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, has retired as a federal appellate judge, ending an investigation into whether she violated judicial conduct rules by participating in fraudulent tax schemes with her siblings.

The court inquiry stemmed from complaints filed last October, after an investigation by The New York Times found that the Trumps had engaged in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the inherited wealth of Mr. Trump and his siblings. Judge Barry not only benefited financially from most of those tax schemes, The Times found; she was also in a position to influence the actions taken by her family.

  11. I always liked Pink…way to go yes

(The Hill) — Pink wants to “Get the Party Started” against Florida book bans.

The singer says that at her upcoming concerts, she will be giving away thousands of books that are prohibited in the Sunshine State’s public schools.

The 44-year-old performer and the free expression organization PEN America, along with poet Amanda Gorman, announced the effort on social media on Sunday.

  12. Oooh – some hot red on red…

The Colorado Republican Party has censured state Sen. Larry Liston and called on him to resign, after Liston filed a criminal complaint against the husband of the chair of the El Paso GOP. Liston's the longest-serving Republican member of the legislature, so of course it would be a good move for Dave Williams to try getting rid of him and take a risk on losing yet another seat.

  13. Comment reply threading is back! Please shift+refresh to make sure you're loading the latest template, and this isn't the last time we'll be asking you to do that.

  14. Poor Marge…are you tired of winning yet?  Thank you, Congressmen Darrell Issa, Ken Buck, Cliff Bentz, Mike Turner, Patrick McHenry, Tom McClintock, John Duarte and Congresswoman Virginia Foxx.

    1. A rather amazing thing continues with MTG and her klan. The conviction that the majority of Americans agree with her angry, spiteful, screeds and that "everybody knows" the nonsensical accusations that spew from her Moon Pie hole, seems unshakeable.

Her information cocoon must be exceptionally small.
