  1. Courage and grace seem to be entirely missing from one political party in the US.  I wonder if it has to do with their ideology or leadership?

  2. WTF #1

    https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/30/us/politics/bennet-odea-colorado-senate.html

A Surprise Senate Race Rises Out West

Senator Michael Bennet, a Democrat seeking re-election in Colorado, faces a challenge from Joe O’Dea, a novice Republican emphasizing more moderate positions in a break with his party.

    WTF #2

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/08/26/joe-odea-colorado-republican-senate-challenger/

In Colorado, this Republican offers something appealing, not appalling

    1. That WAPO column from never-Trump, ex-Republican George Will, is filled with hope that there will be a resurrection of a non-Trump Republican party.

He apparently thinks that since unaffiliated "flocked" to O'Dea in the Republican primary, O'Dea has a chance of attracting the unaffiliated in the general election, too. He never says why.

Estimates of the votes of the Unaffiliated in the past couple of elections are 3 in 5 or 2 in 3 unaffiliated voted for Democratic candidates. Anyone seen something credible saying the Unaffiliated are going to break to Republicans this year?

      1. What George Will is not taking into account is just how odious the other choice in the US Senate race was. I am sure several U's (like myself) only voted in the Republican primary to thwart the worst options. But come Nov. I will be voting for continued Dem control of the Senate.

  3. Blackmail Leverage. Josh Marshall thinks that Trump was storing up scandal or embarrassing information to use for blackmail or power brokering.

As TPM Reader TS put it yesterday, for him it’s like another version of all the choice dirt The National Enquirer had stored up in that secret safe: a store of menace and threat, chits to be exchanged, leverage to be exerted, an insurance policy in case things got rough. Owning what’s in the safe is power. It can’t be stressed enough how much this has been Trump’s M.O. for decades — only now supercharged by the most powerful information-collection engine the world has ever known.

    1. I agree that at least some of the seized documents were potential kompromat for Trump to use. His mentor, Putin, taught him well, and as Josh Marshall points out, this has been TFG’s modus operandi forever.

      1. Non-sequitor here kw but saw this and thought of you (and all of our Catholic traditions that started in the pagan world). This kook says “witchcraft-practicing lesbians” like it’s a bad thing. Wait until he gets to the Pearly Gates and sees who’s waiting for him!

        1. I didn’t know that some of  the founders of BLM were queer. It makes sense, though…It’s always been true that many people who bent that arc of justice were also brave souls who dared to stand in their own truths. A gut understanding of how societal and personal oppression and progressive action intersect is critical to being an effective activist, in my view.

Locally, my friend Christopher Arlen is a brave gay black man, who helped organize an interfaith coalition to stand on Jeffco street corners in nonviolent support of Black Lives Matter. He ran unsuccessfully for City Council, but is still an active Democrat, pastor, and activist.

To push back against Lahmeyer’s accusations of witchcraft and black (selfish) magic, I can only repeat the “theology”   a Native friend of mine shared many years ago:

“All the world’s religions are like the branches of  a teepee- they come from different directions, but all come together reaching for the light at the top.”

    2. I assumed he stole what he did to either 1) sell to the highest bidder in some country we don’t get along with very well, or, 2)  hold over someone’s head for leverage of some sort. or 3) pretend he’s still The Guy. rather than T.F.G.

  4. Dave Barnes: typical national papers who parachute in to dig for reasons, no matter how small, that a race might actual develop. Dickie Wadhams is exceptionally good at getting national political writers interested.

    1. Regarding The Bulwark, I'm glad you discovered them (altho I've shared stuff for a couple years). The Bulwark is one of the remaining bastions of real conservatives. I'm a modest financial contributor.
