Earl Scruggs. What more can be said about a guy who invented a whole style of playing?
Here he is late in life, surrounded by offspring and people he influenced. Pretty damned good musicians. Lineup after the video.
From the YouTube comments:
Earl Scruggs and Steve Martin (banjos)
Glen Duncan (fiddle)
Randy Scruggs (acoustic guitar)
Vince Gill and Albert Lee (electric guitars)
Marty Stuart (mandolin and Mullet From Hell)
Gary Scruggs (harmonica)
Paul Shaffer (piano)
Jerry Douglas (dobro)
Harry Stinson (drums)
Will Lee (bass)
I used to love Albert Lee’s work with Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band, but Vince Gill blows him away in this clip.
Probably the first exposure for many of us with the bluegrass music of Earl Scruggs.
Ellie Mae?
I thought of this clip when I heard Earl died, and was planning on posting it here before I got sucked away from the computer for the day…
RIP, Earl Scruggs.
In honor of Grandpas and Grandmom’s everywhere.
and Prince rocks them into submission. One absolutely phenomenal guitar solo by a totally underrated virtuoso who BTW can play 12 different instruments.
Whilst playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps, of course, originally by George Harrison. This concert was to celebrate Georges’ life, after he had passed away.
To provide some background, at the time I believe some of Princes’ recording work had been passed over by one of the others he was playing with here, so he had a major chip on his shoulder. Check out the body language, and check out the Tom Petty WTF ? look. Playing with anger, or playing THROUGH anger, I don’t know which.
Anyway, Prince KILLS IT ! Thought you all would enjoy:
Kicked some serious ass there.
Holy crap did he just obliterate those guys. Prince has always seemed to excel when he’s been disparaged somehow.
It’s when he knows he’s the king he has trouble hanging on – like eating nothing but water and cake frosting for a whole tour.
especially you ellbee. Really good to see you back buddy.
There are kisses left undelivered and sighs and moans unuttered…

Napa, pool, 2 wheels, sailing, margaritas, champagne, Napa, Alanis Morrisette in the parking lot at Tower Records, then Bottom of the Hill, Pearl Jam in GG Park – with Neil Young (and Eddie sent refunds to anyone who wanted- I sent him a check),
Never again.
