Fun With Press Releases: Guess the Area Code!

  •
  • by: Colorado Pols

We get a lot of press releases, as you might expect. Some are gooder than others, and from time to time we like to share those with you in our “Fun With Press Releases” feature.

Today’s release comes from Mark Shaffer, who is kicking off his campaign for HD-51 tomorrow:

PRESS Advisory

Mark Shaffer, candidate for Colorado House District 51, which encompasses Loveland and adjacent areas, will formally launch his campaign on Wednesday March 14 at the LaQuinta Inn on the corner of Cascade Avenue and West Eisenhower Blvd. in Loveland.  Doors open at 5:30 and Shaffer is expected to speak at 6:15.

For more information, please call 669-0030.

Thank you.

That’s it — the entire press advisory. Generally shorter is better when it comes to press releases, but you probably shouldn’t leave out some of the more important details. For instance:

  • There is no area code listed with the phone number. We remember when you only needed to dial seven digits in order to connect a call. That was cool. As fun as it sounds for those of us who don’t live in the area to try guessing at the area code so that we could actually complete a phone call to Shaffer, it’s probably better to go ahead and include that information on the release.
  • Is Shaffer a Democrat? A Republican? A Whig?
  • Does Shaffer have a website where a reporter might be able to learn more about him? Google says so, but the press release doesn’t.
  • And finally, this release makes a mistake that sadly is not uncommon — who is Mark Shaffer? Local businessman? Local dentist? Animal trainer?
  • Writing a good press release is not rocket surgery, but it’s not as easy as many young politicos assume. If you haven’t done it before…get some advice from someone who has before you hit ‘send.’
