Romney Wants Wealthy Voters...Everyone Else, Not So Much

Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney had a strange interview on NBC yesterday in which he went out of his way to say that people who complain about the so-called one-percenters are just doing it out of envy.

As The Washington Post explains:

Romney was twice given a chance to nod in the direction of saying that concerns about these problems have at least some legitimacy to them, that they are about something more than mere envy or class warfare, and that they are deserving of a public debate. And this is the answer he gave.

At a time when polls show rising public anxiety about these problems and what they mean for the country’s future – and at a time when Dems are preparing to run a campaign focused on economic unfairness and lack of Wall Street accountability while painting Romney as the candidate of the one percent – this seems like a pretty revealing and important moment.

There’s no question that Romney is personally tone-deaf to the problems of anyone who isn’t in the top 1%, but we’re continually amazed that he always makes sure to make that crystal clear.

  1. A man who has absolutely no compunction with raiding workers pension funds to line his own pockets will also have no problem gutting social security to further benefit the 1%.  And just to rub salt in the wounds he’ll tell us to stop having such a silly sense of  ” entitlement ” by demanding to have what we put in for decades, and what is fairly and legally ours.

I see it coming.  We’ll all have to ” tighten our belts “. Well, most of us.  Fuck you, Mitt Romney.

    1. Although, I really think folks give this smug child of priveledge too much credit for his concern about the one percent . . . I think Mitt’s concern is limited to his oneself — it’s merely coincidence that a few of the wealthiest benefit from his craven self-interest.

“Crony capitalism”? — Mitt doth project too much . . .

  2. Herbert Hoover, I was once told by a history professor, used to insist that people left their jobs to pursue opportunities like selling apples and pencils when he was president.

Wealthy businessmen (let’s not call them entrepreneurs or job-creators, since few of them actually fit the definition of those terms – and even fewer are women) create so many layers of removal from ordinary workers that they’re often utterly clueless about how we really think and feel, or live for that matter.

Keep it up, Mittens, and make sure you do your part with the congressional campaigns while your at it. PLEASE.

  3. was born into the top fraction of the top 1%.

It’s also curious how he sees this as something that should only be discussed quietly, even secretly and not in any public way.  Seriously creepy.

    1. the great unwashed masses overhearing their betters breathing a word about things they can’t possibly understand and, given their natural mindless envy, will only incite them to who knows what!
