Poll: Who Will Be Our Next Front Page Guest Editors?

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE: Congratulations to Middle of the Road and ProgressiveCowgirl, two of our very favorite veteran front page editors re-elected to serve for the first half of 2012.

On account of a very close race for second and a greater need in general for quality writers going into a major election year, close runner-up Pita (who more of you may know as Ellie) will also take up front page editor responsibilities on January 1st. Congratulations to all three.

—–

This poll (after the jump) is an election for two new front-page guest editors at Colorado Pols. The new editors will start January 1st, and barring anything unexpected will hold their position until the middle of 2012–at which time we’ll have another election. Remember, there’s only one poll of nominees, and the top two finishers will win the coveted front page editor spots.

Good luck to our nominees, voting ends at 7:00 PM tonight. New account creation, currently disabled, will be restored at that time. Remember, we are closely monitoring voting to prevent cheating–please don’t bother trying, we will catch you and humiliate you.

Happy voting!

            1. I had a friend who lived in Birmingham, AL for a year. I visited him in November over a long weekend (not Thanksgiving – I think it was a week earlier) and was surprised by the warm rain at night. Colorado rain is never warm. But, over the weekend it got cold.

Birmingham’s too far north for a real coastal climate, but it was nice anyway. The trees still had lots of fall color.

I’ve only been through Arkansas once. It was at night, too.

              1. Just stay out of the stores. And cities. The warm rain is a bit odd. It’s usually warm while the rain is here (and muggy during the summer) and then drops ten degrees once it moves out.

I miss the snow and cold! So does the dog.

        1. in January. They currently live part time in Chicago and part time here. Is your weather typical? Because if it is, I’m going to find a way to start visiting them. I had no idea it was so warm in the winter there.

          1. I’m under the impression that it stays fairly warm down there. I don’t remember the winters here, lived in Dallas for most of my childhood when I visited here, which means they probably weren’t dramatic. 🙂

Stay the hell out of there over the summer! It was way over 100 degrees with 99% humidity. Even with the AC (never turns off) on, the freezer doesn’t freeze properly. That’s hot.

Just now considering where you live… and it’s balmy here all winter.

            1. in Arkansas and rock hunting. I remember it being both gorgeous and already really warm. I lived in southern Illinois for four years right on the Mississippi and it was ungodly fucking hot. You would actually sweat while taking a cold shower. Constant humidity nearing 100% with temps sometimes running in the high 90s’ for weeks on end.

So, I’ll be inviting myself for visits in the winter, when it sucks here and is nice there. I’m betting money they will be out here in the summer for the same reasons. 🙂

      1. As a native Coloradan we go to vacation in Arkansas every summer.  30+ years ago my Grandfather bought a time share on lake Hamilton in Hot Springs.  We love it. Great downtime vacation.  The lake is bath tub warm (think polar opposite of Grand Lake).  Nothing to do tourist attraction wise. So sit on the dock, swim, have a cocktail a barbeque and get some good down time.   We love it.

    1. BTW, overdue is the story of my life. I’m surprised BlockBuster isn’t still in business thanks to my late fees.

Kids library books and DVDs, fuhget about it. No more furlough days for Denver Public Libraries!

Thanks for the vote. You and I have been around here awhile and I always learn from our debates.

      Merry Xmas.

  1. I didn’t even realize  I was nominated. I’m sure this isn’t necessary as I have no illusions about the chances of my winning but, for the record, appreciate that someone nominated me but couldn’t accept. I’ve never even tried a diary so the thought of figuring out the technical aspect, even if the level of expertise borders on any idiot could do it, freaks me out. That and the responsisbility. Thanks for thinking of me, though!

        1. I should have been paying more attention but I’ve been in kind of a fog. Participating again after not being able to bring myself to being interested in much of anything for a month has been great therapy for me, though. Once again, sorry I didn’t jump on this so nobody would waste a vote.

          1. I was gonna vote for Pita as my second choice and it looks like Pita will do well anyway. It isn’t the first time I have wasted a vote… probably won’t be the last.   🙂

            1. But I am used to wasting votes for years on whichever sacrificial lamb is put up against the Repubber in CD-5.  I even held my nose for Curtis Imrie a couple times.

I do, however, feel much better about wasting a vote on BC than Curtis Imrie

          2. whatever the source of the distress you mentioned (none o” my beeswax), I hope things are improving. If you feel like talking about it, I know your many friends and admirers here would be interested in listening.

            Either way…my best.

            1. Unexpected, premature death in the family.  He felt absolutely fine in August and was gone by the end of October. It’s not going to go away any time soon but we all have our sorrows, don’t we. Here’s wishing nothing but good things in the coming year to all of us who have suffered painful, irreplacable losses.

    1. There are several people here who would help you. If you can post, you can post a diary. The fancy formatting is usually not needed; if it absolutely is, the guvs (or your fellow FPE) will do it for you.

It’s your content and your judgement that people have voted for.

      Suck it up!

  2. She writes diaries (well, and not often enough)

    She pisses off people.

She isn’t bothered that she pisses people off.

To Daftpunk and Car31 and Bluecat — I’m sorry that Alva only let me vote once. (Which makes me wonder why ArapaGOP is permitted to vote so many times for himself?)

And, finally to ArapaGOP, I owe you sincere apologies;  reading MichaelEllis makes me realize how very you are from being the worst person ever on this site.

    1. will this be the first time a previous FPE was elected to serve again?

Before anyone says “DavidThi808,” keep in mind that he came in third and Pols gave him the FPE job anyway, despite saying only the top two would get it. I consider him co-opted, not elected, to his second term.

      1. I voted for you. I thought that trend had died with the most recent elections, but no. Sorry.

That said, I’m fairly happy with the results. An embarrassment of riches and such.

  3. moderate and conservative Republicans have fallen away. We used to have quite a few who argued their own points, not just the handed down offical points. I guess the poison of the increasingly nasty tempered divide has had its effect here, too.  It got harder to be civil to one another. Heck, Romanoff supporters and Bennet supporters can barely stand each other any more and there was a hardly any difference in their mainly centrist positions. Too bad.

  4. But I already posted a diary with my goodbye to the office and anticipation of congratulating MOTR and Ellie!

(OK, I admit it, after diarying I noticed the tie and then refreshed obsessively until 7… but I’m still surprised it came out the way it did.)

Thanks to whichever 19 people thought I did a good enough job to serve back to back. I strongly suspect that if BlueCat had dropped out before election day Ellie would have won, so I certainly would be in support of a do-over if Guvs are interested… though I think that’s been suggested due to one or another similar circumstance for at least the last two elections and has never happened.

(Not knocking Blue. I nominated her, after all. And had she won, I think she’d have gotten talked into serving and done a very fine job.)

    Congrats MOTR!

Will someone in GJ please buy Ralphie a drink? He’s going to need it if he has to deal with me for another 6 months =/

    1. We do note the close race for second, though, and would like to find a way to acknowledge Pita/Ellie’s strong support. The last time we did that there was some push back, but it may not be the case now. And we are headed into a big election year.

Thoughts? Do we put it to a vote?

      1. I see no problem with 3 FPEs. Honestly, I’m happy to win (who doesn’t like winning?) but I’d cheerfully step aside to pave the way for Pita’s first term if that’s the easiest solution for you. I’m happy to serve but Ellie/Pita is a MUCH needed new perspective for the front page, and I’d love to see her obliged by duty/guilt to diary more often.

      2. I’m in favor of the 3 FPE proposal, but if you decide against it, please allow me to take back my own vote for myself and reallocate it to Pita. I voted for myself earlier this morning when Blue dropped out and the Pita/MOTR ticket was looking comfortably ahead — didn’t feel like choosing between the two of them and I had something like 10 to Pita’s 16 at the time, and had planned to vote BlueCat until I saw that she’d declined.

It was fun to win back-to-back, but now that I’m over the excitement of the last 15 minutes (Pita’s up 1! I’m up 1! Tied! Repeat!) I feel that Pita is the better choice for the blog in an election year. She would represent not only a more conservative voice (lacking in the last several FPE sets) but also the Western Slope, which she’s uniquely qualified to cover in a depth rarely seen here.

      3. in our shared charter, I nonetheless must support THREE front page editors.

And…ahem…remember where your water comes from.  We want a voice dammit!

      4. given our expanding population base . . . as long as none of those hot babes are named after some biblical King.   :~)

Hell, if we get another nine, I see the potential for a Colorado Pols calendar.

        1. It wouldn’t be the first time I appeared in a calendar?

…and the other one had to do with a massively nerdy website, too.

(Fully clothed, for your information, perverts.)

            1. I actually look forward to that kind of technology continuing to advance. As soon as it becomes possible (and public knowledge that it is possible) to fake a completely realistic and indistinguishable from the real thing nude photo of anyone you darn well please, maybe the many qualified women currently avoiding public life (whether in business, politics, entertainment, whatever) out of fear that someone will find an old cheesecake photo of them can finally get ahead.

                1. The 3D printing, not the real me.

Not to mention there’s only ONE real me. Accept no substitutes! And make no copies, or if you do don’t ever let the copy meet the original, ’cause I’m pretty sure we’d kill each other in 5 minutes or less.

    2. It’s the Cowgirl nose to nose with Pita, and MotR maintains a comfortable lead. Thirty yards and COWGIRL is pulling ahead and WINS! Cowgirl by a nose.

      (The crowd roars)

  5. appears to have taken it in the shorts again, unless MOTR and PGW have creatively disguised their origins.

    Some things never change.

    Congrats to the winners.

  6. (only one vote behind PCG as of 7:30), I think a lot of us could get behind the idea of a third FPE for the semester. As much as I know MOTR and PCG will do a great job, I think we’d benefit from some new representation. And I think there’s a much better case to be made for this bit of promotion than the Coup de Dave, which set this precedent.

  7. You are veterans and will do a great job with what promises to be a continuous legislative session in 2012.

To those that supported me, thank you.   I plan to be around to post my two cents worth on issues and stories I think are important.

      1. Somebody always gets poached by a campaign and feels ethically obligated to resign, so the more the merrier. Don’t get any ideas, FPE-elects! 🙂

And holy crap. An all-girl FPE crew at Colorado Pols? It’s an early Christmas present!

      2. Didn’t expect the decision so quickly! Yay for the packed court — should be a fun early 2012.

By the way, a very important tip: DO NOT GOOGLE “Cowgirls back to back.” Was looking for an image to cockily post to Facebook. NEVER AGAIN.

        1. after turning off safe search completely, I found maybe one image – all the way at the bottom of the search – that I think might account for your dire warning. But nothing like, say, goatse… (if you know what’s good for you, don’t google that one.)

        1. I’ve been reading this blog since 2007. I think this is hands-down the finest crew of FPEs ever elected. Not to sleight any of the others, but we’ve got experience, intelligent young spunk, and ideological diversity in this batch like never before.

Excellent choices heading into a big year!

    1. and for voting for Pita.

She will make an excellent FPE–very fair, always respectful in her replies, and extraordinarily knowledgeable about state politics. You picked a good one, ArapGOP.

  8. This is what I get for going home early to ice my ankle and numb the pain with four Valium.

Especially love the decision to add Pita to our roster. Thank you, thank you, Pols! She is a much needed voice and from a geographically situated part of the state that needs to be heard from more.

Congrats to my two fellow FPEs’, ladies. Well deserved and humbled to be serving along side you both.

    1. But I could be totally wrong. In either case, I believe she’s essentially the classic Colorado Republican — like the old school R’s I grew up looking up to, even as a wee little left wing radical. Definitely a big expansion of the ideological breadth of the FPE contingent regardless of her registered affiliation.

      1. Just kidding. Great to have Pita. Also I’d like to both apologize to and thank those who voted for me or thought about it before they knew I wasn’t really in. Nice to feel appreciated. 10% under any circumstances better than I ever would have expected. And with your reelection, PC, I guess well be seeing daily front page diaries on the whole horse slaughter thing? Once again, just kidding. Great panel of FPEs.

        1. No, actually I was thinking of starting a series of selected political events calendars around the Front Range. I feel like I should diary more if you guys have decided you want me around for a full year as FPE…
